You can't turn off Cortana in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Not a big deal for me, they never bothered to make Cortana work in Poland.
I just find voice assistants pretty useless and annoying, any time I try to use them it just winds up taking more time than it would have were I to have just done whatever I was planning on doing manually. Changing music while driving is pretty much it, because were I to do it myself I'd die.
"I'm afraid I can't let you do that, Chief"
Will it work on non-english language Windows 10 now? I wanted to try it when I installed Windows 10 but nope.
I think it's fucking idiotic it just checks your OS-language and goes "Nope, you can clearly only understand finnish and it's not supported, so fuck off!" instead of having a settings-page where you can just select the language.

I had it working in Australian English and Japanese, you just have to make sure the OS language matches the country you have it set to. They never do a Geo IP lookup or anything and it doesn't appear to be used anywhere (have Japanese one working in Australia so I know it works).

It's just a matter of OS language, at worst you can fix it by installing a language pack. I have w10 installed in English and Cortana works fine.
EDIT:
I mean it "works" in the sense that it's functional, it's still completely useless

Gotta have that US flagdog for anything under bing to actually be somewhat useful

Probably will expand this out
In regular bing/cortana searching 'US Election' returns sweet FA, however with a US locale of bing at my desposal, I can get a magnitude of information.

All of this information doesn't exist here.
It's a hindered platform for a majority of the world. And yet they will still force it onto everyone, for all I hope people that do choose to use it become vocal on what it lacks, and that it needs to be improved for it to even be considered liable.
Wait so I won't be able to turn off a feature that I don't use because I find it to be not only useless but also cluttering?
Thanks Microsoft....

Or even better if your CPU supports it, GPU Passthrough.
Heavily cutting down my exposure to Windows has improved my sanity by magnitudes.
I've really been wanting to do this ever since you mentioned it to me. Really close to buying a new CPU and Mobo.

people will defend this
My entire defense of Windows 10 hinged on the fact that I could disable whatever I liked. I didn't like automatic updates so I disabled them. I didn't like telemetry so I disabled it. I didn't like Cortana, so I disabled it.
That's gonna change if I can't disable shit.
So, have they finally updated Cortana to be a half nude hologram woman that walks around your desktop ?
On that note: I'd probably unironically install Liko, then again she's actually really useful in the anime.
I wish Microsoft hadn't locked down the API so much. I tried to write a Cortana extension a while back but it seems you can't even interface with it using a normal desktop application.
It feels more like what you'd see on a smartphone I think, but even for that the API seems cumbersome and unreliable.

Regarding the Cortana API it seems that you can actually interact with her with a Windows 10 "app" but it's still super limited.

There was a proxy project that could add completely custom queries, but it seems to be abandoned and I don't know if it works at all on a computer. I hope someone figures out how to hook the process directly.
I wouldn't mind Cortana if she didn't Bing search any command I give her beyond opening an application. She's pretty retarded.
What the fuck does Cortana even do
the only thing that I know it does different from the normal search bar is allow you to say "that motherfucker is on box at B site with an AK" which it picks up as "hey cortana" and allow you hands-free alt-tabbing in the middle of a game.
Dunno if this if good or bad because idek what the damn thing does.
Only thing Bing is good for is porn. I'd imagine someone will figure out a way to turn it off.
Why is Bing good for porn?
Why is Bing good for porn?
Better results I believe and you don't have to be specific. For example you can just search for Tera Patrick and get boobies while Google kinda censors the results unless you get specific.
I might as well throw my cards on the table regarding this. I like Windows 10, but users should be able to opt out of features that they don't use. I for one never really make use of Cortana, yet it sits in the background eating away resources. (although not by much)

I mean
You can't remove it but you can stop it from always being ready, right?
it's unsupported in my country

we are blessed
My trick to disable Cortana completely (and stop it from running in the background) is just to delete/rename it's folder under C:\Windows\SystemApps, kill it in task manager and then hit "Try Again" on the dialog box before it starts itself again

:v:
Good thing I have Win8.1 and Win7 flashdrives ready.
For some reason even when I'm using Cortana the process doesn't show up.
Weird.
Cortona would boot me out of games because it thought I was talking to her

Can't you set her up so that she doesn't respond to the audio queue?
I set her up like that when I first installed and she hasn't been bugging me
Also, god it's fucking weird that we're calling this piece of software "her"
