• Egypt Suspends 8 Female TV Anchors, Saying They Are Overweight

It's not fat acceptance to say that a generally fat person can be fit... There are fat weightlifters, athletes, male news anchors even? Al Roker, while not a news anchor specifically during this time but still on one of the most popular news shows, was a solid 320 lbs during a good part of his career, but he was still a totally good weatherman who did his job and did it well. Obviously this is another country with different ideals but it's still shitty.
you can be overweight and still be healthy, but no I can't wait to see all the concern trolling that going to happen
I never said that's not possible, just that TV is all about appearance
There's really not much more I can say if by saying overweight people make for unattractive presenters, I must be looking for super hot, super model chicks. There is no middle ground between the two.
I think the insinuation that people who are overweight can't be presentable is very stupid, and it's a very odd priority to have in terms of picking a presenter for a news program. If "fat acceptance" means treating people who are overweight with the slightest, minimum amount of respect to the extent that they don't get fired from their jobs for arbitrary reasons, then I'm all for it.

Not that I agree with firing fat news presenters, hell we have Andrew Neil over here so enough said there.
to be fair, while this is stupid and nobody watches this, how many even chubby news anchors have you seen. they are supposed to be the face of the show. and of course someone brings up 'hurr durr this is islams fault'
These women have an example figure status i guess? im not really fond of the example figure social mandate, but still i get where they are coming from. Obesity is one of the big health problems in turkey for some reason. Also this woudnt be a problem if those women were forced to wear the burka... just saying.
This isn't an Egyptian thing, my girlfriends sister is a news reporter and the studio just brought in image consultants who blatantly told the women they needed to lose weight. Now they can't outright say "you're overweight, drop the weight or your fired" but that's the tone, and they will find a reason to fire you that is legal.

I'm 106 lbs soaking wet and I've been to the doctor multiple times in this past 6 months alone because of health problems. But people who do more physical activity are typically a little more diet/exercise conscious than people who don't. It doesn't matter if your overweight but workout, what matters most is the extra mass your body is having to deal with. I would assume the same would apply to extreme body building as well.
On one hand I really don't think it's right to fire somebody if they can do the job with competence, but on the other hand it's a job that is best summed up as, "look good and talk into a camera." Not necessarily saying a chubby girl can't look good, not at all, but if that's not acceptable for the station then I guess it is ultimately up to them. Definitely don't like the military getting involved like that, but it's Egypt so no surprise there.

But that doesn't have much to do with being able to present the news and still look good while doing it.
And then there's the counter argument that takes it to the extreme. It was only a matter of time until fat acceptance arguments would come out. It's not about being a super model, it's just about looking healthy and in shape.
lmao the first fucking reply this gets is this:
Oh so you're saying it's impossible to be healthy (what is your definition of health by the way, then?) and chubby/fat/overweight at the same time?
Yeah, it's impossible to be healthy and be a fucking fatbody at the same time.
Who's to say your average person in a fit body isn't gobbling down tons of unhealthy shit every single day but stays in shape? Is that heatlhy?
Just because other people are unhealthy doesn't make unhealthy the new healthy, that isn't how it works.
It doesn't help anyone and particular not overweight people being scuffed/hidden away because they don't try to have a body you think they should have.
Since I have a pretty strong libertarian streak I think everyone has a right to fuck up their body as much as possible, if you want to be fat then that's not really my business how you conduct your life and honestly I wouldn't care any more than if you want to be skinny. I don't care. It's your body. My body is mine. Even worse still is when somebody gets offended on behalf of other people because their bodies are not your body, but I'm not even concerned about that. No, I'm concerned about your implied claim that ~fat people can be healthy too.~ Don't try to pass some emotional tumblrina bullshit off as medical fact, fat people are unhealthy no matter how hard you or anyone else bawls about it. I can find nothing at all that supports the claim that #healthyateverysize is scientifically accurate, I did you a solid by looking. I knew I wouldn't but I still gave it a shot so you're welcome. [editline]19th August 2016[/editline] Oh and secondly simply being "overweight" increases your risk of several diseases, the human body was not designed to waddle around with fifty pounds of lard and I say this as somebody who has struggled with weight issues in the past.
an example of one said anchors
If they all look like that then I can't blame Egypt at all.
Egypt has a huge obesity issue, sometimes even beating the US in that regard. Maybe they just don't want the Egyptian public to start accepting morbid obesity as something normal which is understandable.
Presentation is important for many jobs, this is not a surprise. I lost weight in order to improve my chances of getting hired as cabin crew and I wasn't even near being overweight. I hope they do end up losing the weight, it will benefit them in the end.
You can still look stellar as fuck if you're chubby, fat, overweight?
Stellar? That really depends on your definition of overweight. You can look great while being chubby, but you'll have a hard time doing that when downright obese.
Why does it matter if the anchor is fat or not? They're there to report on something and I suppose look professional while doing it, which these chicks obviously do. I get why they'd want good looking women, I get why any TV station would want good looking women, but it's still unethical bullshit - I don't see how this whole fat acceptance/healthy or unhealthy/attractiveness discussion has any revelance. [editline]19th August 2016[/editline]
Given the choice between an overweight and normal person, which are you more to watch, skill being equal?
I'm assuming we're talking about news and not porn here, in which case I'd have to go with I don't give a fuck just tell me the news.

whether you believe that anchors have to be thin for their jobs or not, it cant change the fact that this is really just a scapegoat for the fact that no one watches their propaganda news
It doesn't. This is just a symptom of the wonderful muslim message of misogyny. (User was banned for this post ("Shitposting" - Big Dumb American))
it's amazing how you can turn conservatives into liberals just by adding islam to the subject

(User was banned for this post ("Shitposting" - Big Dumb American))
How is this shitposting but what you say about me couple posts ago isnt? Fair and balanced. Also i was saying that im not into turning the feeling that a public figure is a role model into mandate... Using it to write laws restricting the liberties of public figures but that i assumed this is what is happening. If you run a news station and want to present a certain image for your station then you have the absolute right to hire and fire people based off of appearances, even if those appearances are new. So long as these women got a warning (they did), this is completely fair. [editline]20th August 2016[/editline] It's not like weight is some inevitable unavoidable thing unless you have a serious condition. Changing your weight is possible for every person on the planet. Also, for those of you asking how it affects her ability: Her job is literally to talk and present a good image for the news company. That's it. If the news company no longer feels like she is projecting a good image then whups goodbye
