What a rubbish article
did you guys bother to even read the article? Every fucking thing does this from google, to steam. I've seen this same exact thing everywhere
What a rubbish article
What do you expect from gizmodo. Honestly, its stupid shit like this that freaks people out. Why are they freaking out that theyre going to be collecting data on you and then market more shit to you, that you may actually like? Its called ad-services. Exactly as what redbadger said;
Every fucking thing does this from google, to steam. I've seen this same exact thing everywhere
Its the same shit people where freaking out about on the facebook app and its permissions. Its spreading a sensationalized misinformed piece of bullshit so you can click on their bullshit story then they again collect data off you, then market shit to you.
They're usually scare tactics to make you think you have less options or rights than you really do. They're unfortunately pretty common. I'm not really well read enough in this type of law to know if the TOS contains anything that won't stand up in a court of law, but it wouldn't be the first time, that's for sure.
i'm pretty sure even mcdonnald's meals have some arbitration clause tacked onto them, they try to use those clauses to sidestep consumer protections by going "AH HA you agreed to this!" and judges have unfortunatly bought into it but not all and in some cases, like a murder in a nursing home the judge finally ruled that the arbitration clause couldn't protect the home from criminal negligence
Most of these things are incredibly common, though. If you submit your stuff to Oculus, they can take it and redistribute it. -oh no-. I don't see it being a problem that they collect information on how you USE the device since that can be used to improve the product.
pretty much every tos has "super shady stuff" and this one does not seem different in the slightest
I want to see someone compare the Windows TOS to this. I bet they're all not that different.
God damn I'm a Viveboy but this idiotic "OMG FACEBOOK OCULUS" BULLSHIT needs to stop
God damn I'm a Viveboy but this idiotic "OMG FACEBOOK OCULUS" BULLSHIT needs to stop
Facebook is spying on us. Best post a status update on facebook to let all my friends know.
I fucking knew something like this would happen the second Facebook bought it.
I feel like people don't understand that a lot of seemingly shady shit in ToS' and EULA's are found in every ToS and EULA. They're probably found in Valves ToS and EULA as well.
I fucking knew something like this would happen the second Facebook bought it.
Read the thread
I feel like people don't understand that a lot of seemingly shady shit in ToS' and EULA's are found in every ToS and EULA. You can't just sell a complex piece of hardware and software platform that you intend people to develop for without having an agreement with how those services can be used.
Time to buy a Vive
Time to clear out an entire room in your house to use it.
Time to clear out an entire room in your house to use it.
except you can use the Vive like an Oculus if you legitimately can't find a single room to put the lighthouse towers in
I fucking knew something like this would happen the second Facebook bought it.
what exactly is that? Someone is going to use data to market products to you? if so, you're going to need to get off the internet and find a nice cabin in the woods to live in.
I'd be more concerned with the "facebook owns content". Does this mean that if you want your game to be oculus compatible it has to be signed by facebook? How could they enforce a content policy on a game that is released on steam, for example? If so, it sounds like they're really setting themselves up for an overly restrictive proprietary license which would encourage devs to develop for the vive instead

In any event, they can't take ownership of a game you release on Steam. This kind of language is really common and is just cover your ass type stuff. A restrictive licensing policy like some people are wrongly extrapolating would be super against their own interests.

They're trying to push their video platform more and more.
Maybe uploading game footage directly to facebook? They're trying to push their video platform more and more.
Yeah that's a pretty reasonable guess. I assume they'll also have their own store for 1st & 3rd party games and definitely 1st party apps, if that hasn't already been announced.
People were talking about this when Oculus was bought by Facebook. Guess they were right.
Gee I hope you don't own a smart phone, have any social media accounts, use search engines, browse websites with ADs, use video game distributors like steam, or any of the other millions of ways to experience these same things.
Surprise: It's a botnet.
Seems hilarious to call something a botnet while running windows. Hope for your sake that's a spoofed user agent.
Seems hilarious to call something a botnet while running windows. Hope for your sake that's a spoofed user agent.
Is this something you actually believe
Seems hilarious to call something a botnet while running windows. Hope for your sake that's a spoofed user agent.
Is that {USER'S OPERATING SYSTEM} I see ? Oh boy, I hope you're using a {SMARTASS BUZZWORD}, or else you're gonna be swimming deep in {FEARMONGERING BUZZWORD}. I am glad I bought and plan to use {COMPETITOR PRODUCT}. All of these {PEJORATIVE NICKNAME} drones must be feeling so dumb right now.
Read the thread Yep https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1513164&p=50062957&viewfull=1#post50062957 It's only "shady shit" tho if you have no idea why these things exist in the first place, let alone how technology businesses or really any businesses work.
im someone that doesnt know a lot about how businesses work. can you explain to me why this stuff isnt shady?
Basically, if you submit, say, an image to imgur, or a link to reddit, they need a license to use, modify and redistribute that content in order to host their services. If they didn't have that license, they literally couldn't copy the content you submitted from RAM to their database, let alone provide it to other users.
im someone that doesnt know a lot about how businesses work. can you explain to me why this stuff isnt shady?
A good example would be Steam and how you wouldn't be able to just pull your game and then go after Valve because you still see information around about it. Or say they made a promotional video using content from what you release on their platform and down the road you try to go after them saying that it's yours, try to get backpayed for it, etc. So yeah, as was said above the company just needs to establish that they actually have the rights to use your content. Otherwise you could light a fire under them for a billion different reasons. But that's not them claiming full rights to your IP like a lot of people are believing from this. It's claiming the right to use what you gave them.
One serving of ads to my face, please.
Oculus VR, LLC (“Oculus," "we," "us" or "our”) is pleased to provide you access to, and use of physical goods, platform services, software, websites, applications, and content (collectively, the "Services”).

By submitting User Content through the Services, you grant Oculus a worldwide, irrevocable, perpetual (i.e. lasting forever), non-exclusive, transferable, royalty-free and fully sublicensable (i.e. we can grant this right to others) right to use, copy, display, store, adapt, publicly perform and distribute such User Content in connection with the Services. You irrevocably consent to any and all acts or omissions by us or persons authorized by us that may infringe any moral right (or analogous right) in your User Content.
so basically if you make something on the headset oculus has rights to it
