Not to mention it's unclear just how long they have been working on it. For all we know they could have been working on it right after the Brood Wars. I know they didn't start that early but still. A few years of paying dozens of programmers and dozens more voice actors, some of which were hard to get back in the first place. I'm surprised it wasn't more.

They started development right after Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne. Which is 7 years in development for Starcraft 2.
Blizzard has an obsession with making extremely balanced games.

Zerg rush?
I disagree. Each of the WOW expansions has added lots of new content which is the whole purpose of an expansion. Without new content people will get bored and quit and WoW will die off.
From what I understand each expansion adds new raids and destroys the lore and increases the level cap. I don't play it so I don't know for sure, they are just things I've observed. MMOs shouldn't even have expansions if you ask me.

Easily countered.

They certainly aren't useless. They might drive the game in wrong way, but it would get boring after some time as it was, anyway.

Burning Crusade was a great expansion that blended seamlessly with vanilla WoW. The newest one WotLK though didn't live up to the hype. A lot of people don't like it but it seems fine to me and most other people but it lacks in something I can't put my finger on.
Now that I think about it. Its probably because Burning Crusade fixed all the wrongs in Vanilla by adding Badges and a better PvP system and other huge changes. While WotLK didn't do anything drastically new or unique compared to Burning Crusade.
I have faith in Blizzard that $60 will be worth the cost, but my expectations will be very high. The campaign better be long, detailed, and fun.
Also, if any kind of pay-to-play subscription is dropped on any of the Starcraft 2 games, or if Battle.net becomes a subscription service, I will never buy a Blizzard game again.

First off, there are two stand alone games to follow Wings of Liberty each featuring the campaigns of their respective race. Campaign will be very long.
Secondly, Battle.net will never become a subscription service. It has been free for over a decade, to ask for money now will be rediculous. Not to mention the money they get from WoWs monthly fees, I doubt they will ever need to add it to battle.net itself.
They said they were going to add optional extras to b.net like downloadable high quality maps for money.. but they said the core battle.net will remain free always. Remember that kotick is in charge..mr greedy moneybags..
i'm just gonna wait until the zerg one comes out
The movies look like box-office level stuff, so I can see that.
Turns out it didn't cost $100 million.
Last week we reported on a Wall Street Journal article that tagged the development cost of StarCraft II at more than $100 million. According to Blizzard, it was a case of right price, wrong game.
How much did StarCraft cost to make? Blizzard hasn't said, nor is it planning to any time soon. What Blizzard will tell us however, is that the $100 million figure that appeared in the Wall Street Journal is not correct.
Apparently the WSJ got its games mixed up. The $100 million-plus figure in the article referred to the development and upkeep of World of Warcraft, its massively-multiplayer online game. The numbers are based off figures we reported on two years ago.
The Wall Street Journal has printed a retraction, and our original post on the subject has been updated as well.

Will never happen, unless you look at WoW. Seriously, they are pumping out useless expansions.
Are you kidding? Wrath of the Lich King contains easily as much content as the classic game. (If not as much actual game world)

I guess that might be partially true for the last expansions, but the current one in development is basically a massive revamp of all the vanilla zones, quests and items. On top of a reworking of the stats and talents, and then new zones raids etc.
To be honest there are a lot of people who whine about anything in WoW's community, the last expansion wasn't so great, but the new one so far has definitely had a lot of work put into it.
I like Wrath better than both BC and classic but maybe I'm crazy

I fail to see any anime resemblance.

ah ha ha ha oh wow
starcraft has always been ridiculously anime-influenced
the protoss are pretty much ripoffs of the zentraedi from macross (which you probably watched as a kid under the name robotech)
terrans? pretty much a mix of every human army in a sci-fi movie ever, but the valkyrie was (again) based on the variable fighters from macross, in terms of function (i.e. missile spam), and the goliath was pretty much a mobile suit from gundam

While I disagree that it turned into an anime, it's certainly more gung-ho than the original Starcraft.
Some examples of old Starcraft cinematics:

partly, mainly just trying to make him uncomfortable though
edit: oh yeah also one of the hero units in the editor is named after a character from a series for girls (Alan Schezar)
and the Yamato Cannon is a confirmed reference to an ancient series called space battleship yamato

You've certainly made me uncomfortable.
is it bad I've never played Starcraft
is it bad I've never played Starcraft
Yeah it's a real damn shame.
A lot of well known games cost anywhere from 50 million to 100 million to make. It's not that surprising.
I just opened up my car bank and found I have 96 dollars in loonies and toonies, and 22 dollars in quarters. I haven't even counted dimes or nickles yet, but it looks like I can afford the collectors edition!
Sounds kind of silly but they certainly put effort into it.
And this is why they think it's okay to charge $150 a copy. :colbert:
And this is why they think it's okay to charge $150 a copy. :colbert:
$150? Where are you buying your copy? It's 60 for regular edition, 99.99 for collectors.
100 million yet, they really dont have much to show for it, while yeah it seems as balanced as the first they really haven't added much to the game play have they, and it really makes you think what all those workers were doing.
Yeah they added some units here and there and upgraded the graphics quite a bit they havent really done much else have they?

To be fair, Real Time Strategies have pretty much reached their peek. It's very difficult to reinvent the genre since it's all been pretty much covered. Besides, it's Starcraft 2. To change the gameplay drastically would make it impossible to call it Starcraft. Much like how C&C removed base building in their final installment.
holy fuck, total awesomeness
