Conservatives in general look back to the way families were ideally portrayed in the 1950s. A few kids, a heterosexual marriage, and a dad working, and a mom staying home. They're all Christians. And they think that's ideal.
They see the advancement of homosexuality as a threat to this. In addition, they believe (falsely) that it is a choice to be gay, or that it can be changed once it has developed in an individual.
