The Higgs-Boson "God-particle" May Have Been Found
We'd learn more if we find something else no one predicted, but we'll discover a lot in any case, even if we don't find anything.
I agree, although finding out the Higgs doesn't exist is seriously unlikely we can hope it has a few surprises when it is discovered.
This particle has been "found" many times before.

Every month there's a thread like this..

He appears to be very dense, unintelligent, slow-moving, and tragically, short-lived.
I considered posting this a few days ago, but I didn't because it has virtually no real backing.
It isn't, it's a theoretical particle that's predicted to cause mass, that's it.
That's...it? what
"May have" usually means no.
That's...it? what
I'm pretty sure that finding the particle that causes mass has huge implications for science.
That's...it? what
They're gonna have to rewrite alot of stuff if they actually found it.
They're gonna have to rewrite alot of stuff if they actually found it.
And much, much more if they don't
And much, much more if they don't
Let's hope they find something, otherwise it would've been such a waste of time, and money.
I managed to ask a question at a to the Atlas team at the LHC via video conference. it was what happens if we don't find the higgs boson. Answer is, it is very exciting for physicists but particle physics funding will take a blow. People won't want lots of taxpayers money invested into these huge particle colliders which lead us nowhere. This is the public view of course but that is the most important view. This isn't the scientific view however because the LHC isn't just to find the higgs boson and with more data analysis they will discover things which the public will never hear about.
A scientist that works at CERN twittered that it's phishy.
I think the leak is fake, especially after the Tevatron announcement.

SUCK ON THIS RELIGION! /sarcasm
But really, we all knew that this day will eventually come

It wouldn't have been a waste, because they'll have proved it doesn't exist, which is still a positive outcome, even if it's the opposite to what they were hoping for.
I think this would be a fantastic find. But I think with the name "The God Particle" it's just going to cause an outrage in religious circles purely because they don't actually understand what it is. If it had a more scientific name there wouldn't be any confusion and even the Christians wouldn't mind its discovery at all.

"oh the researchers haven't found what they're looking for for the benefit of humanity? shut it down"
People really have to start understanding these processes don't happen quickly, if at all, but many other scientific advances can be found by pushing on.

The only problem I have with the nickname "god particle" is that for people unfamiliar with particle physics, they're going to associate it with extreme religiosity. Not something anyone wants.
And now Sanius is going to bitch about how i'm a fucking antitheist because I don't share his view on a word

this really doesn't prove anything against religion
does it?
Quantum Physics is an ancient scientific field of study dating back to a time before recorded history.

As has been said, both the discovery or the proof of falsehood of the existence of the Higgs-Boson, either way, would be of massive significance to the physics community. Proving it false wouldn't mean it was a waste of taxpayer dollars. It would mean that every physics textbook the world over would essentially be scrap.
We need to stop calling it the fucking "God" particle. Keep religion out of science.
Also if it was found, I'm sure more fanfare and celebration would have commenced.
The concept of God doesn't have to be related to religion at all.

The discovery of the higgs does not benefit us at all, particle physicists do it for the curiosity. However while it does not look useful now, it may be useful in the future, we will never know so might aswell continue forward with particle physics.

"it doesn't benefit us but it benefits us"
that's what you just said.
Fuck yes!

It doesn't help us now is more what he said.

still helps us.
still helps us.
I did badly phrase it but the discovery of the higgs (if it is discovered) probably won't help us at this current time. However we cannot be sure if in the future that having the knowledge of the higgs boson will benefit us acknowledging that physicists persue particle physics of of the curiosity to understand the universe. Not just to understand the universe at the particle level but it also helps our understanding of space.

Which day?
A day will come in a million years too, if there is anything left to research by then. Can't wait
Oh.. wait.
It isn't, it's a theoretical particle that's predicted to cause mass, that's it.
except it's pretty significant, because it's the only particle predicted by the standard model that we haven't found yet
it's the final piece of the puzzle
[editline]24th April 2011[/editline]
They're gonna have to rewrite alot of stuff if they actually found it.
actually no, if they find it it means that what they wrote is right
this really doesn't prove anything against religion

It proves that god is in fact a particle :downs:
