I'm not exactly sure why you say the 1-in-5 figure is "debunked" and then you link me to a CDC study that says 1-in-5 women have been raped Unless you're trying to say that it's not 1-in-4, it's actually 1-in-5, in which case 25% to 20% isn't much of an improvement
Look at its response rate. 33.1%. 12,000 completed interviews. That's a small amount. Furthermore, the 1-in-5 is based on the three categories of "completed forced penetration", "attempted forced penetration", and "alcohol- or drug-facilitated penetration". In the eyes of the law, rape is any form of non-consenting penetration. And while certain countries have begun to include more than just forced penetration, in the US (as far as I can tell), attempted rape is an entirely separate offence within the US. Also, some questions within the survey are pretty weird. Consider this one:
When you were drunk, high, drugged, or passed out and unable to consent, how many people have ever … *had vaginal sex with you? By vaginal sex, we mean that {if female: a man or boy put his penis in your vagina} {if male: a woman or girl made you put your penis in her vagina}. * {if male} made you perform anal sex, meaning they made you put your penis into their anus? *made you receive anal sex, meaning they put their penis into your anus? *put their mouth on your {if male: penis} {if female: vagina}? *put their mouth on your anus *made you put your mouth on their vagina or anus *made you put your mouth on their penis *put their fingers or an object in your [if female: vagina or} anus?
There are two things to note about this question: It lacks a prompt for a negative answer, and it includes all sexual acts while under the influence. To put it another way, you'd still answer positively even if all of the instances came from you and your partner drinking at home leading to some bedtime together.
Hell even for me it's sometimes difficult to judge, if they're both so wasted that they can barely walk. Who am I to step in and say "hey sober up first"? Could be legitimative, could be abuse.
Probably best to err on the side of caution and break it up. People don't make good decisions when they're drunk. Worst case scenario if it's legit, you're a cockblock. Worst case scenario if it's rape, it's rape. [editline]16th April 2015[/editline]
The surveys that claim 1 in 5 are flimsy as fuck and have been debunked over and over. You can read them both and draw your own conclusions. 1 in 5 women on campuses https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/nij/grants/221153.pdf 1 in 5 women during their lifetime http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss6308a1.htm?s_cid=ss6308a1_e
I never really got why being made to penetrate someone else was put into it's own category away from rape rather than just being treated as it is, sex without consent, which is rape. When you look at the 12 month statistics for women who have been raped and then compare them to the 12 month statistics for men who have been forced to penetrate then look at all the other instances of sexual violence listed in their results tables, men and women are pretty even in how often they are violated according to that survey.
