makes me wonder why there aren't hundreds of corporations scrambling to mine the shit out of mars. up there mining would consist of 40 people with buckets and grabby sticks just picking up millions of dollars worth of rare materials.
Because it takes 300 billion dollars to hitch a ride on a Delta-IV. To LEO. Then there's the trip to Mars. The deployment and remote control of a mining operation. Then there's getting back, with, at most half a metric ton kilograms of Platinum. That's a little less than thirty million dollars.

Oh fuck, Skynet got into Mars
Cool, I wonder what that could be? Maybe remains from an old rover?
No rover has been in the Gale crater before :v:
This rock in the foreground clearly has a USB port and a headphone jack
Can't be, they're all too far away from Curiosity
What about the probes/landers that have been lost? Also, the map doesn't show the (crash) landing sites of the Soviet probes. Edit- I've just done my own research and found that none of the Russian probes landed or crashed anywhere close to Curiosity.
Transformers: Dark Side of Mars.
Why don't they drive it back there and take better pictures?
Some people's suggestions reminded me of the premise for this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tommyknockers
it's me
I'm thinking it's probably a broken drill bit if anything. The bits on rovers are built to detach if they are lodged in a rock face.
Why don't they drive it back there and take better pictures?
Because space gas is expensive.

Most never got there/blew up before reaching mars Also its an alien guys.
blew up
Well, there's some speculation right there. A piece of their probe landed on Mars. Then again, I don't know too much about atmosphere logic.
Necrons.
Good thing Curiosity has a laser, it can distract them while we rig the world up to explode.
its buzz lightyear of star command
Why don't they drive it back there and take better pictures?
It's good for our mental health to be left wondering for a while so the disappointment will be bigger.
Well, there's some speculation right there. A piece of their probe landed on Mars. Then again, I don't know too much about atmosphere logic.
actually IIRC a soviet probe reached mars but they lost power after it lande
Could it be a piece of the skycrane or heat shield or something?
The strange sight - which looks a bit like a robotic arm - was noticed by imaging editor Elisabetta Bonora from Italy.
case dismissed.
Why don't they drive it back there and take better pictures?
There's probably a significant delay between telling it to do something, it doing it, and the photos coming back.
it's the borg queen's spine from 2063 transported 50 years back and landed on mars
Looks like a metal boot to me; then again it's probably just scrap metal from an earlier probe. Either way it should be brought back by a future expedition for further study.
Weather balloon obviously. (User was banned for this post ("Meme reply" - Orkel))
Well I thought it was funny >_>
It's a handle that you're supposed to pull and it opens up the rocks into an underground martian civilization.
case dismissed.
Not yet. The "arm" is seen in the original NASA image as well. http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl-raw-images/msss/00173/mcam/0173MR0926020000E1_DXXX.jpg
Only a matter of time now. Only a matter of time until our end arrives. Only a matter of time until it all melts away. Only a matter of time. or maybe it's just a piece of iron from a meteor.
