I can send directions from much more reliable apps than Facebook.
Which apps in particular? Facebook has millions of users already, I don't see why there's a problem with the app, especially since you'll automatically have all your friends available without having the hassle of asking for their numbers.

I think Google has more of a user base than Facebook. So does MapQuest.

The exact opposite situation for me.
Hey, guys, btw, if you have a smart phone, get skype, you can freely send messages, and call people. Even talk on the computer to a phone with it.

Too bad the Skype client isn't that good.
And a resource hog, just like it's windows counterpart.
Skype's clients in general desperately needs a great overhaul.
Though I'd rather trust Skype than I'd trust facebook.

I love skype, haven't had an issue with it myself, but I'm biased at times.

Sadly I can't say I share your experience.
I DO admit that it once were great, but it's like they've forgotten how to make a great program or application based on the idea of skype.
The exact opposite situation for me.
Well, The last time I gave my email address to a group of people, I received nonstop chainmail for like two months, and three people I didn't know mysteriously entered my contacts list. One of them started hitting on me and telling me that she's "mature for her age." I think she was 14 or something.
Bahaha.
Every iteration they've done of the messanger thing they have on Facebook itself has sucked greater and greater magnitudes of cock. So let's have a look and see how well this does.
Since most major providers have an unlimited texting plan that's usually pretty popular I don't see why anyone would want to have to text through Facebook. It's just inconvenient, and the whole point of texting is it's convenient.
Come on Facebook think.
It's like BBM but with fewer riots being organised through it

If you have a data plan (even like 10MB would do it unless you want to send pictures) FB Messenger beats the shit out of texting

I also think email needs replacing with something (sad that Google Wave failed). These systems are decades old and they are shitty
I have unlimited texting, this is pointless and silly.
God the ignorance

I've never had any problems like that, also it's not like I can't mark certain e-mail senders as spammers, so they'll automatically get regarded as spam and junked on arrival.
Facebook on the other hand, oh all those invitations for shitty groups and shit from/for FaceBook games i get on a daily basis.
It's like people are only mature about E-mail, while treating FaceBook like a goddamn toy.
For fucks sake.

Facebook is a easy way to fool people.
E-mail isn't anymore.
Built-in spam filter and all that good stuff.
I don't know where all the FB game/group invite shit went, it disappeared a year or two ago. What happened anyone?
No one I know uses email, ever. The only emails I ever get are automated stuff
Am I the only one in the thread that realizes SMS stands for "Short Message System" for a reason?
It wasn't designed for your inane conversations. It was designed for "I'm on my way there", "Do we need milk?", etc. The fact that it took off as an IM protocol instead is irrelevant - considering what it was designed to do it works perfectly.

Not everyone has a smartphone.
Thats what is cool about Google Voice. You can send SMS messages over wifi to someone who has a plain old dumbphone. It can do voice calls too.

I actually have a phone plan that includes unlimited texting and 100 minutes of voice calls for $20 per month. And this is in the US, land of overpriced cell phone service.
I did it all European style and paid a crapload of money for an unlocked Nexus One and went up to the I-Wireless store in the mall and got myself a SIM card.

You can send messages to people with crappy phones too, and they can send messages back.
And most of the phones send multiple SMS at once anyway, so you can go easily over the 160 chars limit.
I don't think regular texting will be replaced until the entire existing cell network is ditched and replaced with high speed data. Not everybody has smartphones yet.
So now they will be able to sell your text's to the government and private investigator companies too!
