Nice strawman. Wouldn't you think information like that would be important to the investigation anyways? This is almost certainly a hate crime, after all.
Possibly, but not in an initial press release intended to solicit information before it cools off.
Boy that police report listing her as a man in women's clothing really pisses me off.
That police report is fucked up, I hope someone is seriously reprimanded for this. The police should issue a public apology. How are transpeople supposed to trust the police when they insult a dead transwoman in a press release?
[editline]24th July 2015[/editline] First of all, TheCreeper's second quote from the ABC article is extremely misleading and only refers to the findings of the medical examiners. This is what the police report says:
Just before 9:00 a.m. on July 21, 2015, HCSO received a call from an employee of the University Area Community Center, 14013 N. 22nd Street, that there was ,what appeared to be, a deceased female laying on the ground next to the basketball courts. When deputies arrived, they confirmed the individual was deceased and notified our Criminal Investigations Division for further investigation. ....... HCSO homicide detectives responded to the scene and, with the assistance of medical personnel from the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office, confirmed that the victim exhibited obvious signs of homicidal violence to the upper body and that the victim was a male dressed in women's clothing.
The quote in the OP post makes it /kind of/ look as if the police misidentified someone's gender, which isn't really true at all. The report claims that they at first thought it was a female, but upon a medical examination (and possible ID check) it appeared as if the person's sex (not gender) was male. Medical examiners simply noticed that the person was biologically male and reported that as they should. The report described the victim's biological sex and clothing, not gender. ----- On another note entirely - I am disgusted by how the only thing people seem to care about in this thread is the possible case of gender misidentification (as opposed to the murder of a trans woman). While it would be unfortunate if it actually did happen, it would more than likely be due to an honest mistake coming from a police department that is more than likely not filled with very progressive/LGBT-aware staff. Flame them all you want, but know that your anger is misguided and at most you'll be getting a weak apology. If you insist on calling for blood, think about it - should someone (and their family) be screwed over completely due to what would more than likely be an honest mistake? If you have proof to the contrary that they did intentionally misgender someone (which they seemingly didn't), go ahead, but it's far from worth it and will only alienate people from your cause. This is a serious issue that a lot of people have with the trans community, in that they seemingly expect everyone to understand everything about transgender people and gender identity and tend to explode when someone (even unintentionally) misunderstands something - and in cases like this, even when they don't.
