Chernobyl No.4's New Roof is Completed; Currently Moving Into Position

That will keep those blasted Monolith out of the plant!
It's not that expensive for a country like Ukraine, but it was probably really low on the agenda.
Isn't it kinda bs that the ukraine is expected to pay for the long term safety of Europe, for a mistakr the soviets did? We should chip in considerably at least
Those guys working in that environment better get a hefty salary.

Not really. Most of the areas around the reactor aren't any higher than what is considered a safe background level.
Once a reactor is successfully dismantled the remains of the structure are filled with sand and capped. Most of the Hanford Reactors are just small-ish blocks of concrete now that they've been entombed and the surrounding building has been demolished.

Eventually the entire plant will be a few concrete blocks where the reactors used to be and the rest will be empty field.

Looks like a woodshed owned by a couple of hicks
"HEY MA, IMMA GO GET ME SUM RADS OUT THE SHED ON TO MUH PICKUP TRUCK!"
I hope they film it being dismantled over time, that would be an awesome time lapse video.

Its funded by many countries, its in many peoples best interests to get it sorted
I had never heard of this before and when I saw the title I imagined them putting a dome over the whole city, Simpsons style.
What would happen if someone tried to blow that open?
I'm assuming that it'd probably just start leaking, be detected, probably not cause too much damage, and plugged up?
Well first off you're going to need some serious explosives to dent the entombment.
Second with the core removed all that's left is the cement structure and a bit of low emission scrap metal along with the sand as infill.
You can blow it up now, sure, but it will not be some catastrophic environmental disaster.
Also shame on you for pulling the "what if terrorists" card.
On one hand, I'm sad to see the iconic, STALKER-landmark of a Soviet concrete block be replaced by this shed. On the other, it's real good they're doing it; that piece of shit was crumbling hard and fast, and needed replacement ten years ago.

The core hasn't been removed.
I wonder how long that giant sarcophagus becomes symbolic of Chernobyl more than the ruined reactor itself.
That thing is designed to have a very long future. I almost wish that I could see what it looks like in 500 years.
You already know how it will look like in 500 years... exactly the fucking same... and thats the point.
The core hasn't been removed.
The majority of the charge face has been removed for processing and recycling.

As far as I know there are no plans on dismantling most of the stuff under the new chernobyl's confinement. They only going to dismantle unstable structures which might collapse in the near future.

The plan is to dismantle and demolish everything over time. Firstly they want to disassemble and remove all of the old sarcophagus as it is in danger of imminent collapse. After that they want to deal with the internal structure. It's going to be done with remotely operated robots and cranes, stuff will be cut down to small sizes, decontaminated and then moved for processing.
Highly radioactive and medium-level stuff will either remain on site or be moved to the Vektor radioactive waste facility being built nearby (it's literally some massive concrete lined holes in the ground with rooves over them last I checked)
Low-level stuff will likely be buried somewhere else.

I take it you haven't seen photos of nature reclaiming Pripyat? It's already starting.

a beautifully overgrown ghost city, with a big ugly shiny dome next to it.
I'm not really well versed about this, but will the Corium deposits in the bottom of the reactor be any issue? Or have the deposits become stable enough to work around by now.

That's not a picture of the Chernobyl reactor. That's a photo of the N Reactor.
Oh I wanna play Stalker now.

Read the quote chain. It was in regard to what if someone blew up the entombed reactors at Hanford, not Chernobyl.
Imagine how fucking cool it'd be to explore Chernobyl in its current state minus the radiation hazard
I'd say I hope that's something that I'd be able to see within my lifetime, but it being a tourism spot would kinda ruin the experience.

You can already go to Chernobyl and it's already a tourist spot
You can already go to Chernobyl and it's already a tourist spot
Yeah but I'd love to be able to explore the actual inside of the building.
Fuck it'd be so cool.

Oh, I'm not playing the what if terrorists card, just the what if card. Even I acknowledged that even if it was dangerous, it'd probably be found out really quickly and dealt with.
Neat though
It's now in place. The race to put a new lid on is finally over.

fucking wicked seeing that many people in a dangerous zone
That is a technological masterpiece...
A building larger and magnitudes heavier than a walmart, effectively on wheels, built to completely eat another building.
