• AMD unveils "Mantle", an open graphics API that allows console like direct to metal optimization on

For some reason, I can see Nvidia either pulling off their own thing or going along with Mantle. With Nvidia attempting to sort out their rep with Linux, and the Steambox coming out with SteamOS. It looks like everyone is scrambling to get their feet in the door. Competition can help the industry, its really simple to understand. With a lack of competition, how do you expect us to actually do anything?
Nvidia supporting EGL in their desktop drivers would be more useful for Linux support honestly.
This is the worst idea I have ever seen. Don't you know what the industry was like before OpenGL and DirectX became standards, and everyone had their own APIs?
it's a little different if it's the major hardware suppliers/competitors for the console and PC market than "anyone"
And then NVidia does like amd did with PhysX: "No thanks don't want." On laymen terms: "AMD makes thingies for developers to write fast code for AMD products! Competitors allowed to use too."
AMD never turned down PhysX. NVidia wouldn't let them have it - they even added code to specifically check if a pc has a radeon card (even when a NVidia one is in too), to disable PhysX. Anyways, PhysX is pretty bad aside from the GPU acceleration which is coming in Bullet soon anyways.
the only thing I've argued is that making a radeon gpu exclusive feature that utilizes all 8 cores of a cpu is dumb. if that's not what they did then I don't care, but the promo lists it like it's a feature, it doesn't say ''these improvements to GPU performance will also allow for better utilization of cpu cores'' so it's just sneaky marketing apparently. [editline]26th September 2013[/editline] I didn't even debate with the people who were saying it's because of the API overhead. once again, the promo lists it as a feature of mantle, not bi-product of mantle's GPU improvements. if it is a feature, that's dumb. if it isn't, acting like it is is dumb. that's what I've said.
It doesn't even list it as a feature of Mantle, it lists it as a feature of Frostbite 3/BF4 utilizing Mantle.
It doesn't even list it as a feature of Mantle, it lists it as a feature of Frostbite 3/BF4 utilizing Mantle.
you should have another look. the whole image is a BF4 themed mantle promotion. it doesn't specify anywhere that certain features are a result of frostbite 3. the only thing is that it says ''mantle in frostbite 3'' which is basically just saying ''these are the mantle features you can look forward to in bf4 and other frostbite 3 products''. people would be calling them out if they listed other frostbite features such as destruction 2.0 in their promo since we all know it to be a signature of frostbite. again, sneaky/dishonest marketing that worked on me until a programmer pointed it out to me.
Nvidia supporting EGL in their desktop drivers would be more useful for Linux support honestly.
Which will most likely happen since NVidia is working with Valve on SteamOS.
