I'm probably going to get flamed, but oh well. IMO, killing may be necessary, but it's never justified. Bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki was definitely not the 'right' thing to do, but it, in all likelihood, had to be done.
Do you have any idea of the kind of mindset Japan had at the time? Casualty estimates for the initial invasion of the Japanese homeland were as high as five hundred thousand. To put some perspective on that, Iwo Jima, one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific, had roughly twenty six thousand casualties. On Iwo Jima, only 34 of the original defenders were captured. The last two surrendered in 1949, I believe. Read Chapter 3 of this book. It gives a good overview. Google only has a preview copy, so a few pages are missing, but it's fairly informative.
i hope the terrorists didn't get them
Twice? what was the second?
Once was when a Soviet submarine was being depth charged by a U.S boat. The captain decided to launch there missiles because it was an open sign of war. 1 officer didn't agree with the launch when it came down to crunch time so they scrapped it. Another was when the Soviet's version of NORAD was malfunctioning and detecting missiles launched from the U.S. I can't remember how the story went but a technician found out it was a glitch before they passed up the information to launch a counter strike But anyway you can sit and say how nukes are evil and we shouldn't use them. Reality is that other countries don't feel the same.
Nuclear weapons saved the world from a conflict that would have been 10 times deadlier than World War 2.
Peace under a mushroom cloud.... [editline]28th October 2010[/editline] fucking aliens
The Japanese were dumbasses for attacking the United States in the first place. No way they were fit to fight such a war, economically or militarily. My heart stopped when I read the thread title.
You fucker, you scared me. I though I was going to lose the internet.
