dude looks great for 72
even considering that he's a heavy smoker
I'm gonna cry I was playing "Ano Natsu He" from Spirited Away and I came across this thread.
I'm not into anime, but their stuff seems a lot different. Way more real and classy to the point I don't think it's really considered anime.
I haven't seen all of them but I remember growing up and occasionally one of the movies would be on Cartoon Network. I would get lost in their world. It was so peaceful, engaging, unique. You wanted to escape to it even for just a moment.
Those movies always left me feeling great. Such art man...
you see this a lot actually, authors tend to have a very specific feel in mind for their story and, though Ghibli stuff is great, but may not have fit her ideal setting very well. I remember reading recently about an author actually crying and walking out of a movie premier based on her book, can't remember the title right now but I'll check back where I found it
Wasn't that the author of the Mary Poppins book and the Disney movie adaptation?
It's "Tales from the Earthsea", a movie considered to be the "worst of the Ghibli films". It was directed by Miyazaki's son though.
Also pretty sure she didn't cry after watching the movie. She was disappointed at the adaptation, but she thought it was an ok movie in it's own right.
On a personal note I agree with her, the movie was ok, but the adaptation of the book was horrible. The first scene of the movie is of a dragon ripping another dragons throat out(which is never explained), then dragons are almost not mentions for the rest of the movie until the last scene which also will make no sense if you haven't read the books.
Yes, was Mary Popping, thanks
Damn, and here I was wanting to see a Howle's Moving Castle sequel (there is a sequel to the book it's based on) by Miyazaki
Aww, now I'm even more sad, Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favourite movies of all time.
Is this his second or third time retiring?
dude looks great for 72
He looks like he's 30, 40 at most.
I'm not into anime, but their stuff seems a lot different. Way more real and classy to the point I don't think it's really considered anime.
Well that's just preposterous. Something being good doesn't make it not anime, unless Cowboy Bebop or Paranoia Agent are suddenly not anime either.
I don't like any of his films but it's a shame for anyone that does.
He actually wanted to do an adaption of pippi longstocking but was denied by the author herself. Too bad really because I think it would've been amazing.
She turned him down? I know people are entitled to dictate how their IPs are used and all, but she doesn't know what she's missing.
I believe his son also is involved in Studio Ghibli, and even then his dad was only really involved in the screenplay, so I think we'll be okay.
Earthsea was a bit of a disaster in my opinion but there's so many other people that I don't think having Hayao Miyazaki retire would kill the company or anything like that.
Never saw Earthsea, but The Cat Returns was also mostly his son's work, and it was kind of bland too compared to everything else Ghibli.
"retire from the production of feature-length films."
Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but the specific wording makes me think he's just switching to doing shows or maybe short films instead.
Well the article follows that line up with "Ghibli's announcement does not rule out the possibility of Miyazaki working on shorter projects or other endeavors" so you're not alone in thinking that.
