Again. Opinions and feels.
You haven't denied the effectiveness of the solution. You just don't like it. She is under no obligation to give a shit about your opinion.
She could've asked them to not fly here.
They could have asked her to fly there. Instead, they decided to try to spy on her neighbor from her property without permission. You reap what you sow.
You're seriously putting the onus on the homeowner to go notify trespassers that they're trespassing?
Thing is that as far as I know, nobody knows what the purpose of the flying was.
It's the difference between spying and chucking your football into the wrong garden.
Yeah, I'm sure there were totally legitimate reasons for two men to pull their car over across from her house and launch a drone onto her property which just so happens to be right next to a paparazzi-shy celebrity.

Yes, it's common decency.
But by all means keep up the wild west affairs.
If you find a car parked illegally on your property, do you destroy it or get it towed?
This should answer the question of how to deal with trespassing drones. It wasn't threatening you, it's not yours, get it removed but don't destroy it.

It's common decency not to trespass on someone else's property. I'm not defending what she did, but you don't trespass on someone else's property and expect there to not be repercussions.

Some people are assholes. Paparazzi in particular. Why should there be any onus to engage them when alternatives exist? Not to say that you can't do it, but you don't have to, and why should you?
You do this pretty regularly. I don't think I've ever seen you substantiate a claim beyond talking about how you feel the world should work, complete with dismissive patronizing comments about how barbaric you feel America is.

In this case I argue philosophy more than truths, there's no statistics or sources that can prove my opinions.
There's a lot of things I like about america, but the hostility just irks me (and the fact that some people is accepting of it)
Just to make it abundantly clear, I'm even planning on visiting the god damn place :v:
There's a surprising amount of people that are okay with the solution of destroying peoples property with a fucking shotgun because it was flying over a farm.

If you were walking around my property taking pictures of my stuff (or my celebrity neighbor's stuff) with an expensive DSLR I can guarantee you your camera wouldn't survive if I caught you - that or it'd become my camera. There's functionally no difference between smashing some nosy prick's camera and some nosy prick's drone. Mind your own fucking business. There's a surprising amount of people that are okay with trespassing and spying.
If you put your shit in my yard without my knowledge, I'm assuming it's a surprise gift and doing what I want with it, basically.
And shooting a drone out of the sky sounds like top fun as far as I'm concerned.
She said it was harassing her cattle, so who knows how low this thing was flying? If it was low enough to freak out cows it might've been pretty close to the ground.
In the original story she also claimed that they were harassing her neighbor. Assuming what she's saying is true her shooting the drone might not have just been for shits and giggles like people are making out.
If what others are saying has any merit, these two guys could've been going over her property to get shots of Duvall. However, instead of getting out the shotgun, she could've confronted them about it since she could see them in plain sight.
Actually yeah, assuming they weren't driving while operating the drone; that does seem like a better alternative. If they refuse, then by all means blow that shit out of the sky. :v: This whole incident probably could have been prevented with some communication from either side.

I doubt they'd be complaining if she didn't shoot it tbh

If you caught me taking pictures with a DSLR, then you'd come up to me and talk to me. You wouldn't shoot my camera with a shotgun.

Or so you hope

SMashing the camera of someone you find on your property is pretty illegal as far as I know. If I was taking pictures on someone's property (especially a farm property) and they caught me and then shot my camera with a shotgun, especially if it was expensive, I'd be looking for legal recourse. We live in a society, we don't get to destroy things just because they make us mad.
It's absurd, stupid and destructive.
Where I live, you communicate with words.
Sounds like a pretty shitty place if your property and privacy rights don't exist.

Priority for me would be the cattle, get them running and they will go right through a fence which is instantly hundreds of dollars of damage, it increases to tens, hundreds of thousands if the cattle start dying from being out and about.
I'd shoot the drone down too.

DSLRs don't fly, so you don't need a shotgun to smash them.
DSLRs don't fly, so you don't need a shotgun to smash them.
The point remains that you shouldn't destroy the property of people even if they're trespassing, just because they're breaking the law doesn't mean that you get to as well. It's still destruction of property.
Even more so in cases like this, where the people operating the drone were clearly in the line of sight. She should have called the cops, or told the kids to fuck off- not destroyed the drone.

Is it that hard to understand that destroying something that someone else owns for no reason is bad
Actually unsure about this, do you actually own the airspace above you? and if so, how many metres above say, the roof, 10? 20?
there was another thread about a similar incident recently, I dug up that it's something like 100 meters
[editline]2nd September 2016[/editline]
Makes me wonder if this could be filed as destruction of property
if it was within her airspace there's no criminal offense, just civil.
Where I live, you don't fly spy aircraft over people's property without their permission to begin with.
Well, some people might - those people lose their toys. I don't have an issue with blasting this drone out of the sky, though I do think her comments to the news make her sound rather dangerously unstable.
:wow:
:wow:
What else would you call a flying camera scoping out somebody's home? Sounds like a spy aircraft to me.
if it was within her airspace there's no criminal offense, just civil.
This is the real point that a lot of people are missing.
There is no criminal penalty for destroying unauthorized shit on your property. (generally. There's some weird shit, especially with trees, but nothing really related to a drone.) At best the drone operators would have to sue them in civil court. The cops won't touch this, at least not cops in most any rural area. Suburbia might have a problem with discharge of firearms, but rural areas, at least in the states, really couldn't give less of a shit about someone firing a gun on their property.
Even though the burdens of proof are a lot lower in civil court, you are still going to have a legitimately difficult time convincing anyone that you were not engaging in antagonistic behavior on someone else's property without authorization and that that behavior did not justify the forceful retaliation. 10,000 dollars in equipment or not, that's not a trivial case to make.
Sounds like a pretty shitty place if your property and privacy rights don't exist.
Are you misunderstanding on purpose?
The difference is that I'd either:
- Talk to the person(s) controlling the drone.
- Call the police, whose job it is to deal with things like this.
In most cases ignorance comes before malicious intent.

I'd just skip to the peace and quiet by choosing the option that has the least likely chance of making my cattle freak the fuck out and giving me a good laugh in the process.

Ignorance is practically never a valid excuse for actions/behavior.
What else would you call a flying camera scoping out somebody's home? Sounds like a spy aircraft to me.
Sounds like a toy to me. Just because it has a camera mounted to it doesn't mean it's malicious.
Plus why would you need a drone for that when you could just open Google maps and look around people's property from above.

google maps doesn't do you any good if you're trying to get a glimpse of someone's daughter in the shower
Ignorance is practically never a valid excuse for actions/behavior.
Jeez it's not about their actions being "valid".
The very extremely simple point is that you can solve things without trying so hard to keep up the wild west image.
You talk to someone instead of shooting their stuff.
Maybe it's a misunderstanding, and both parties resolve the situation without any grievance.

If you need to do that, you're better off getting something like a Canon 600D and a Sigma 150-600mm lens, which will both probably run you cheaper and get you better photos than a camera drone with such great zoom functionality.

but then you have to find a concealed spot with a clear view, possibly on a roof or halfway up a tree. with a drone you can be more brazen because if someone sees the drone big whoop they can't beat the shit out of you.
