This was in the Queen's Speech in December last year. Then they went on to announce Lord Mandelsson's Digital Economy Bill, which basically states that he'll eventually have total fascist control over the UK's internet and can permanently cut anyone off whenever he wants without any proof of piracy.
Thus you have two options.
1. Resist the bill through the proper channels

2. If such a bill comes into place, and you are unfairly disconnected, you take it to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom/European Court of Justice or the European Court of Human Rights.

David Cameron is a cunt and a liar.
Why the Tories? Quicker internet is just gonna make us download the porn they hate so much faster.
What the fuck. My country seems to be ahead of everyone in this, except Japan.
I have 120 Mbps with unlimited bandwidth (both Upload and Download) for 58€/month
"Majority of UK" will mean London, some other bits in England, nowhere in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales.
There's already FO all over the damn place here and japan/etc, and england is still sitting on their asses with with what 12mbps? Come on BT!
All these parties will promise the world when not in power, but give you the stick when they are in power.

Any "unlimited" connection in Australia will probably cost you about 300 dollars a month. Currently the best deal around is 120gb per month for $50. The speed is supposedly 24mbps, but is shared between other people on the street. The speeds remain consistent, so isps only have to compete with data usage. There's no options you can choose regarding internet speed.
No USA has 50Mbps with some ISPs in select areas. I was paying $80 a few months back for it and it was really awesome. However I still dont think we will be seeing 500Mbps and 1Gbps for quite some time, I mean countries like Australia still have horribly slow internet and horribly low monthly bandwidth.
Proud Brit here, and I already have 50Mbps in my home, I'm supposed to get 100Mbps around 2012.
