Black Box, as it is referred to, is probably called so partly due to actually being black half a century ago, but secondly, it's nature as a behind-the-scenes recording device. It contains all sorts of "restricted" information that experts can use to attempt to determine what might've happened to a flight. Apply the same logic you would to the term "Black Ops". The connotation herein assumes it's contents are not supposed to be known to the average joe. That's my $0.02.
