Before I heard about the Ice Bucket challenge and the ALS challenge, there was just the "Ice Challenge" here in New Zealand before it became crazy in the US
This article is from July. It was about donating to any charity (primarily cancer society or similar). The rules are essentially the same, but some people did it differently, such as jumping into the ocean during winter etc.
It's a cancer fundraising, how is it a bad thing?
Until someone starts an ice bucket challenge website but the money goes to themselves instead
to stop other charities
These are 4 words you never want to hear from anything ever.
I dont think the charities for access to clean water would even want this challenge. They would probably have a delhi water bucket challenge.
This actually makes me regret donating to ALS and doing the ice bucket challenge. This is a selfish move for an organization that is supposed to be about being selfless.
Update: Following complaints, the ALS Association dropped its trademark applications on Friday Aug. 29.
This is exactly why I dont believe in donating money unless I get to directly hand it to the Recipient.
Way too much of donations disappear to line someone's pockets instead of doing its cause.

They are pretty reputable, yes ~28% doesn't go to the people in need, but is designed around keeping the charity around and producing more money for their cause.
72% towards assistance is pretty damn high when you consider advertising their cause gets them more than they spend on those advertisements, thus they support their cause better than someone who merely donates directly.
the whole point was that you either donate, or if you don't want to/can't donate, you 'punish' yourself with the cold water and a video to tell other people to donate or forward the message. People have taken to doing both because they want to forward the message anyway
I know your point, but one other issue is this gets overlooked. I've got so many friends on Facebook doing it not because they want to do it for awareness or charity, but simply because their friends asked them to.

That does annoy me. I donated to a different charity, but when I did my challenge I made damn sure that people were aware of the charity aspect, otherwise, why bother?
