Also the fact that a person could be mentally sane one day, then crack and go on a shooting spree the next.
Just throwing this out there, but this seldom actually happens. Generally someone who finally snaps has some pretty obvious indicators beforehand.
Still not going to stop school shootings, if you want to fix the problem then america needs to look at better mental health care.
Lol if your society is so fucked that it turns into an arms race for escalating violence between citizens and the mentally ill.
but why doesn't this apply to all citizens as well?
there is literally NO reason not to
in order for me to own the guns i own i actually need to pass a safety course, i have to prove what i need it for, and it's to be locked up when it's not used
in addition there will soon probably be implemented a requirement for a doctor's statement in order to get cleared to buy one as well
why is this just a big "omg noooo" for american gun owners?
(i'm from norway)
It already is that way
JAYWALKERS SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WATCH BOTH SIDES OF THE ROAD BEFORE CROSSING. We should teach drivers not to hit pedestrians.
this is a stupid retort because drivers already are taught not to hit pedestrians
I doubt it will reduce the amount. More likely it will see them shunted towards unarmed schools or seem shootings drastically shorted if they go near an armed school.
The only thing that is going to happen is more people harmed, this shit isn't going to help solve the problem, only feed it with more fire.
They should spend a LOT more money on mental healthcare instead...
sweden is already not part of nato so they're by definition a 3rd world country
Ah, so by definition Finland is a 3rd world country as well.
and it reduces the amount of school shootings.
Has yet to be proven
Ok good so now the school shooter will bring a bigger gun instead, this shouldn't need to be a thing to begin with.
I can't imagine living in a society where every single person you meet is armed... it's fucked up.
But what if a teacher snaps ?
A teacher can snap like a policeman can or a SWAT member can. Police members going nuts and on rampages really doesn't happen much, does it?
There is something awfully wrong with the society of the area if, rather than try and tackle the problem, they just implement reactionary measures.
Ractionary measures are better than no measures. And if the student is the one endangering everyone, the student should be shot.
The fact that anybody considers this a remotely decent answer to "how do we stop shooters", is frankly concerning.
This isn't even an argument. This isn't anything but a failed attempt to make other people's argument seem lower.
Prevention is always the best method, but if prevention fails and you're unprepared it's gonna look really bad. It's a bit sad that it has to come this far, but if it does prove to help somehow I don't see why not.
But what if a teacher snaps ?
1. Psychological evaluations are in place to ensure that only 'psychologically sound' people can bring guns to school.
2. The question is irrelevant anyways because if a teacher snaps and decides to shoot up the school, there's nothing stopping them from bringing their gun from home anyways. The difference here is that there will be several others within 100 feet with guns ready to fight back. Lower casualties all around.
But I highly doubt many teachers will 'snap'. Teachers tend to be a lot less angsty than the teenagers they teach. And with society as a whole, those dedicating their lives to helping others tend to be much less likely to 'snap'.
America sure is going down the shitter
nice of you to say mr. foreigner
hows your unemployment rate? ;)
America's worst school massacre was committed in 1927 using dynamite.
[editline]9th September 2014[/editline]
Probably shouldn't give the teachers dynamite, though.

It's better than having a school full of completely defenseless people who are usually in rooms with a single door. If it wouldn't be so expensive, the schools can just fit heavy steel shutters over each door to the class rooms and throughout the hallways. Can be used to compartmentalize a possible shooter and prevent him from from moving around, while the police move in.
And Sweden is on track to be a 3rd world country by 2030.
Your point?
That's false. Unless you define 3rd world countries as countries having an HDI above 0.9. Or if you take whatever a right-wing religious broadcasting may claim to be true I guess!
A truly American solution to an American problem. Bravo.
this is unsettling
And that should be the standard.
So many anti-gunners like to tell everyone that if they are teachers they'll simply give the teachers guns and tell them to be on their way. They won't.
I'm not anti-gun in the sense that I believe guns should just be removed from society entirely, because I don't think that would work
I'm anti-gun in the sense that I think we are in a very fucking sad state if this is honestly a solution.
Not saying it won't work; just saying it's very sad.
Jesus christ this thread is filled with paranoid comments, as if teachers are suddenly going to go on shooting sprees because they legally are allowed to be armed in case a shooter enters the school.

I highly doubt that it's actually arming teachers. It's more like: if a teacher wants to concealed-carry on campus, they will be allowed to. (99.99% of school zones are zero-tolerance on guns afaik)
