Lady was special to the family because she first belonged to Ms. Conlon's daughter, who died in a car accident in 2010. Her daughter had given her the cat about a year before the fatal accident, Ms. Conlon said.
My god, that's horrible!
So one person makes the arrangements, and a separate person takes the pets and signs for the procedures? Gee, what could go wrong? While the vet sure doesn't sound like a winner, who the hell signs paperwork without reading it? You could be agreeing to pay a large fee or something! That makes me think the son gave less than a fuck about what was going on, he's just running some stupid errand for his mom in his mind.
Should of read the form before signing away
I can always count on Sensationalist Headlines to make my day suck more with stories of accidental euthanization of a cat, brutal rape of a baby by her father, and statistics showing American suicides exceed deaths by car crashes. More on-topic: Wouldn't he have been talking to them about how her cat needs a flea bath while at the veterinarian? I mean, he shares some of the fault for not reading the forum, but the vet is little better if the son explicitly told them he wants his cat to have a damn bath.
How is it that easy to euthanize an animal? You can just euthanize an animal without any medical reason?
How is it that easy to euthanize an animal? You can just euthanize an animal without any medical reason?
Animal pounds and PETA do it pretty much every day.
This is a case where a big, fat lawsuit seems applicable. A couple hundred grand won't bring the kitty back but it will pretty effectively punish the vet that can't tell the difference between a fucking flea bath and a lethal injection. Vet should also be barred from practicing for life. It isn't the first time that he's derped out.

I'm now hugging my cat and never letting go, just reading this made me feel awful. I don't know how I'd cope with the loss of either of my cats in such a way.
How the hell do you fuck up this badly? Surely they must check to see if the animal actually needs to be euthanised first?
Actually, no. My dad is a vet and it's outrageous how many people bring their animals in to get euthanized because they can't take care of them anymore (moving etc) Vets who actually care however tend to forgo the execution and instead look for a home and/or treat whatever's wrong with them (we've got a few animals this way)
Bah, shouldn't had read this. Sad now.

It's the owners fault that the cat was killed, the vet was just doing what the owner signed saying he wanted.

And yes, I agree he was an idiot for not reading the forms, but usually there isn't a massive sign saying " YOUR PET IS GOING TO DIE ". It's a wall of text and if you bother to read through the entire thing then you understand that this isn't the forms you're looking for. Small mistake on the dude's part, massive mistake on the vet's part.
But when Mr. Conlon returned with the second cat and said he'd take Lady home if she was finished with her bath, the vet surprised him when he asked, “You want the bodies?” “At first he thought it was some cruel joke,” Ms. Conlon said, but the veterinarian told her son he'd signed the papers.
:( [editline]24th September 2012[/editline] Shit where is my cat I need to give it a good petting
Fuck that's got to hurt the family emotionally. All joking aside, if that happened to my dog i can't imagine how sad i would be. :/
Hahaha, what a hilarious mistake.
Hahaha, what a hilarious mistake.
How edgy.
how do you fuck up being a veterinarian this badly I thought vets were supposed to love animals and be smart
It wasn't too long ago when I had to have my cat put down, so this article really tugs at my heart strings. If this had happened to me, I imagine I probably would have gone pretty much ballistic... I don't know about these folk but my cat was basically my best friend, always there, always loyal, ultra cool personality and he looked like the most suave bastard ever. Reading this story bought back the memories of having him put down (kidney troubles) and the 13 years of memories, so I really feel for them :( My kitty 'Spellbinder';

The vet (or, infinitely more likely, some secretary) handed him the wrong form, he failed to read it and inadvertently signed it. The vet was doing exactly what the forms said the guy wanted. Small mistake on the vet's part, massive mistake on the dude's part.

That's why there's paperwork in the first place. The cat's owner screwed up by not taking her own damn pets in, since she's the one who knows what is supposed to be done and she's the one they talked to at the vet's. The son screwed up by signing on his mom's behalf, without reading what he was signing OR calling his mom to verify what the paperwork said. The mom couldn't be bothered and neither could the son, that's what it comes down to in the end.
I heard on the radio today about this, and the guy on the mic managed to get an interview with the kid. Pretty much said "Yeah, I talked to the vet doing the flea bath, and also called 15 minutes prior to bringing the cat in about the procedure, and when I came in I figured I'd sign the form because it was for the flea bath" Didn't look at the form to even bother noticing it probably had a euthanasia title on it. It was a small town vet service, only the vet and the vet's helper/secretary. I guess he figured that since he talked to the vet and the vet's assistant that they knew the cat was coming in for a flea bath. His fault though, sadly.
Sometimes I really wonder if putting down an animal is the only sulotion, or they arn't really trying hard enough. My cat got put down this summer and I wondered if they actually did all they could
My cat got put down last summer because he got a UI. Was gonna cost $1,500+ for surgery with No guarantees. He was the coolest cat too. :(
Hahaha, what a hilarious mistake.
Your parents obviously made a bigger mistake letting you be born. Not quite as "hilarious" though.
I'd pay a hell of a lot more than $1500 to keep something i love alive.
Absolutely. I'd looked into getting a kidney transplant for my little guy. It would have involved adopting the donor cat, and my cat being on medication every day for the rest of his life. He was always a real wanderer though - leave when he wants, come home when he wants, shag bitches all night long etc etc, so the idea of forcing him to live the rest of his life trapped in the house just so I can force meds into him every day was an awful thought for me. Add to that we were dead poor at the time this was happening (like, POOR) and putting him to sleep was the most humane option available. The kidney transplant was probably going to cost $20,000, then there's the medication at some ungodly cost I can't recall. If I were quite rich I would have done it, but that's just life isn't it...

I had to have one of my cats euthanized after he had a stroke last year. One minute he was in my arms purring, then they came and took him and that was that. I honestly believe it was for the best; he could barely walk and couldn't move his head at all. I didn't have to sign any papers or anything. This really looks like an extreme case of negligence on the vet's part, I don't see how this could even happen.
