there are plenty of applications that do that though. and i'm pretty sure icloud already backs up contacts

because more people have those?
Why should there be an application requirement for something that is a basic need in this day and age?
You can't even save the contacts to the SIM card either.
Sorry, but being unable to export contacts from your phone in CSV/zip/email/whatever format at a moments notice is absolutely fucking ridiculous.
That makes the phone completely unusable for anyone who needs real access to their contacts.
I just use google contacts, so it's nbd.
I've never had to export contacts on my phones for any reason though, they are in the cloud and they are going to stay there.
Android OEM's solution to anything: throw more cores/pixels at it!

android doesn't have that capability in stock either afaik lol
people always whine about iphone's retina being a gimmick, but i seriously find looking at an iphone's (and a windows phone's) screen more pleasant than looking at even a 1080p android screen
i guess it's some typography magic, but i don't know anything about that
It isn't a gimmick, but it isn't a real technology, its just a marketing term.
It's like calling any screen above 720p "HD ready", except Apple when and shat on every single known standard screen size when they thought up retina.

if far more people have x device rather than y of course x users are going to have more cracked screens. if you drop any modern phone the glass is probably going to crack.
x device = other android
y device = iDevice
I see more of y device broken than x device.

you can save them all as vcards on icloud.com
you literally select them all and click export

iCloud isn't an application, its integrated.
Also, who the fuck puts their contacts on their sim cards? What is the purpose of that?? Contacts should be on the phone, I switch my sim card to another carrier whenever I go outside the country.
i'm not even a fan of apple products but damn sensationalist headlines really does know how to spout bullshit to make sure their hate for apple stays integral
android doesn't have that capability in stock either afaik lol
settings > import/export
"import from USB storage"
"export to USB storage"

"export to SIM card"
I remember when the iphone first came out and people couldn't even copy contacts from the SIM card, what kind of fucking phone is it supposed to be?
x device = other android

thanks for the subjective view. could you actually point to objective evidence as to why apple devices apparently have more frequently cracked screens
You can save them all as vcards on icloud.com
I should not have to log into a computer to save my contacts from my phone. That's absolutely rediculous.
I could download them onto the device, oh wait, I can't. [sp]and doing such a thing would be pointless as you wouldn't be able to access the file[/sp]
Most other modern phones support the ability to export as a vcards and browse the phone's SD card, or more importantly, export to the SIM card.

you're going to be on a computer to export them anyway

What if you're going to another country in a hurry and need to transfer your contacts quickly to a shitty phone?
It may not be used that often nowadays, but its a simple, reliable convenience.
I used to keep a phone in my car as a backup at all times; so if I broke my phone I could just pop in my sim card and get going until I could buy a replacement.
Try getting stuck somewhere with a broken vehicle or in some legal problem and having no ones number at all on hand.

why does that matter at all
how is it not easier to just have all your contacts automatically backed up online
you're going to be on a computer to export them anyway
Not if the phone had the basic functionality of exporting to the SIM card.
you're going to be on a computer to export them anyway
No you're not, because almost every other phone lets you export to CSV or whatever format. iPhone must be the only phone on the market without this simple feature.
Not if the phone had the basic functionality of exporting to the SIM card.
even though sim based contacts is a dying technology?
wow thanks for showing me the light some apple devices don't support local export they are the worst thing ever now
why does that matter at all

It is, but it's also good to have a SIM copy. For example, if I was switching from an iPhone to an Android, what would I do?
[sp]I actually own an android and already have my contacts online, I'm trying to prove a point[/sp]

What happens when you get stuck somewhere with no internet access? There are still a lot of places that barely have mobile internet, but can still make calls reliably.

If you read back through this thread, you'll find people are defending a SIM export feature.

Apple mentality: keeping some form of 'hard copy' of your contacts is a 'dying technology'.

export them on icloud and import them on your phone/gmail?
I already have all my contacts automatically back up to both icloud and gmail so my contacts are always in sync on all my devices
Apple mentality: keeping some form of 'hard copy' of your contacts is a 'dying technology'.
apple mentality, lol. pretty much every company's mentality is to move to the cloud these days

You don't keep a backup of anything then I assume? Very smart.
You don't keep a backup of anything then I assume? Very smart.
i keep daily backups of my entire desktop system on an 8tb local nas setup. i don't need local export to keep backups, i can export from icloud then save to my gmail or a directory if i want to.

That's my phone, running android 4.1 (Xperia Arc S running Super Jelly Bean)
What happens when you get stuck somewhere with no internet access? There are still a lot of places that barely have mobile internet, but can still make calls reliably.
why are you switching phones in a place with no mobile internet
all your theoretical situations are ridiculously unlikely and seem more like grasping at straws for ways you can hate apple more
export them on icloud and import them on your phone/gmail?

Having to use two different services across devices is an inconvenience, especially when I'd have to copy over the file to my new android. If I was upgrading my phone (e.g. from my xperia to an S4) I can merely put the memory card into my S4 and import the vcards on the device.
What the christ are you doing if contact exporting is THAT important for you. Do you switch phones every two days or something? As people have mentioned you can still use google contacts or something if you want to keep your contacts in sync. If you use two phones constantly wouldn't it be way easier to just have them both sync from google contacts anyway instead of exporting and importing stuff manually all the time?
