That's $30 too many.
what's $30 when you're already spending so much on a holiday
oh crap now old people are smashing their phones and replacing them somewhere without mobile internet this is such a massive problem wow what is apple even doing
It probably isn't something that applies to people on this forum (who would generally have a decent level of technical expertise); but ignoring the needs of people who aren't as technically able by dumbing down things doesn't solve the problem at all. There are still parts of the world where people do not sign up for mobile internet or do not have access to mobile internet all of the time. And yeah, there are some hypothetical situations on this thread, but if you don't prepare for situations like that, what happens then? I can sure as fuck guarantee you that if I ever travel to Pakistan in my lifetime again I'll be backing up my contacts to my SIM card beforehand just in case.
That's $30 too many.
he's talking about one with data on it obviously
In iOS 7, they've implemented it in the screen you posted
Oh wow that's nice
That's $30 too many.
Not really. 30 bucks for the best guidebook ever? Its totally reasonable.

I don't know of many phones these days that spontaneously combust specifically when you're on holiday, or even when not. If your phone breaks you most likely did it yourself
lol yet you expect everyone to do regular contact backups to their sim cards
It's an option on most phones to save the contact to sim when you make a new one. Get with it retard. (User was banned for this post ("Don't call people retards." - Autumn))
why would you buy an iphone without a data plan

If your phone got seized or stolen, all the contacts would be missing.

What's the case made out of? inch-thick titanium plating? Basically you're just trying to defend the iPhone by saying "whats the point of making a backup of anything, nothing ever fails". Its the same reason people backup their harddisks, yes, your harddisk could be cooled in virgin blood and only used on every 3rd Tuesday, but shit breaks. With or without the $5 case you bought at the fucking supermarket. If a magical case is supposed to protect against every eventuality, why even use iCloud or Google contacts sync in the first place. Live dangerously.
why would you buy an iphone without a data plan
some pay as you go systems are pretty decent but seemingly only in the UK for whatever reason
While I can agree with this, going back to the original argument, it should be industry standard to include universal backup features.
exactly. one button in settings to back everything up does juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust fine.
some pay as you go systems are pretty decent but seemingly only in the UK for whatever reason
i'm in fucking russia and i have a data plan
Your simcard is not the best place to be keeping those numbers, honestly. both android and ios have good backup systems. ios lacks some local export options but those can be sorted with an app or two
It should be industry standard to include many things. You might not have realized, but the iPhone got what should have been "industry standard features" very late. Anyone remember the days of not being able to copy and paste or multitask? Or even set a wallpaper on the Springboard?
Not if they are also backed up online. (No, I'm not backpedalling here.)
then what's the problem with just having them online
Not if they are also backed up online. The Government of Canada EVEN SAYS you should write them down when travelling internationally.
both android and ios have good backup systems. ios lacks some local export options but those can be sorted with an app or two
Why should I have to install an app on one of the most expensive phones on the market for a feature that should be in the device's operating system natively (and is in its top rival's operating system)? [sp]yes, Steve Jobs said "there's an app for that", but it's a feature that should come natively with a device.[/sp]

But it's highly unlikely shits gonna fuck up specifically when you're in a place where there's no internet
if you shove in billions of features you'll just have a bloated os
then what's the problem with just having them online

Phones can break all the time, especially if the owner is not careful with their phone. If it broke in another country where mobile internet is expensive, you'd want your contacts on your SIM so you can buy a cheap phone and import them. (Yes, I said I don't do regular backups to the SIM, but at least I'd have something).

Exactly, its always been a shitty phone.
hint: maybe, just MAYBE, you aren't apple's target audience that doesn't make the phone crap btw
Exactly, its always been a shitty phone.
we were all thinking it, but you said it.
Online is great if you know you'll have a data connection, if you don't you should be writing them down. The SIM card is the best means of backing up contacts other than online / csv format.
