Oh yeah I agree. I wasn't implying that all trailers from back then were good, in fact during the even earlier days it wouldn't be unusual for almost the entire plot to be revealed or spoiled in some way.
It was just an aside, I wasn't trying to imply that you thought that.
I just don't watch trailers anymore.
For Cabin in the Woods, I didn't know anything about it, my friend just said "Hey, come watch this film with us, it's a really good horror film and I think you'll like it."
So when I got round to watching it, I was incredibly surprised and I think that helped me enjoy it more.
I like the trailers before a movie just because my friends and I can rip on the movies without everyone else getting mad since the movie hasn't actually started yet. A lot of the times the pre-movie ripping is the best part of the experience
The Alien trailer was fucking killer. The creature wasn't even in the trailer. No announcer guy, no showcasing big actor names, just scenes from the movie, and a really ominous sound.
My favourite trailer of all time. No other horror trailer has actually legitimately scared me. Just the sound from that alone, and the flash imagery. Seriously terrifying.
The trailer for oblivion was the worst offender of this
worst is if they showed the trailer for interstellar at a showing of interstellar
i fucking hate it when cinemas do that
My roommate and I went to go see Olympus has Fallen. There was a trailer for White House Down beforehand, and we thought we might have been in the wrong theater.
Gone Girl was one of the more well done trailers in recent memory, they showed a lot and gave away nothing about the movie
That's just David Fincher for you. His movies always have great trailers - Social Network was incredible and the one for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is one of my favourites - it shows entire film but gives away nothing:

Most recent one that comes to mind is the trailer for Taken 3. There's a pretty big plot spoiler slapped in there.
In the Amazing Spiderman 2 Trailer, the last scene of the trailer was also the last scene before the movie credits :/
fuck trailers, each and every one of them are misleading and useless.
I have no clue why people need to watch them to see if a movie is good.
Terminator 4 had a great trailer and it was one of the worst disasters of all time:

Terminator: Salvation is a prime example of why McG should never direct anything ever again. The film had fantastic potential and it was spoiled by bad directing and a mediocre script.
The trailer for oblivion was the worst offender of this
You don't fucking put the fucking halfway fucking twist in the fucking trailer!
FUCK!
The trailer for oblivion was the worst offender of this
oh Jesus I tried repressing that memory why would you do this
No matter what you thought of the movie, I think The Inbetweeners 2 had a fantastic trailer - 90% of it left you wondering 'Ok, what movie is this', then a reveal joke made FOR the trailer.
But, if anyone does want to see a REALLY GOOD trailer, watch Alfred Hitchcocks original trailer for Psycho. He spoils the entire movie WITHOUT telling you anything about it. Truly brilliant.
Christopher Nolan seems to be one of few directors left who avoids putting spoilers in trailers

TDKR would like to have a word with you

I think this is the best trailer I've seen in a while, you see an excerpt from one scene that you don't see the conclusion of, but it gives you a compact gist of the suspense and drama to expect from it.
I never watch trailers anymore, they are to long and just show off far to much crucial parts of the plot.
Let's not forget that trailers can give a completely wrong impression of movies. For instance, the trailer for Drive was absolutely misleading, it looked like some cheap action movie with cars. Which did not represent the movie at fucking all.
Didn't the Terminator 2 trailer reveal that Arnold was actually trying to save Sarah? And the Phantom Menace revealed that double edged light saber.
And the Phantom Menace revealed that double edged light saber.
I don't think this is that bad. TPM has no plot (and hence no spoilers) of any consequence. The lightsaber fight was the highlight of the movie.
I think Sunshine had a trailer that hurt the movie.
I remember Quarantine's trailer.
[sp]It shows the very fucking ending of the movie in it in the trailer[/sp]
EDIT:

Didn't Avatar's trailer spoil the whole plot?
I love going into movies totally blind, I don't even like reading any description. Drives my girlfriend nuts.
Super 8 had a great trailer. I like it when film trailers are their own separate entity, same with Prometheus Ted talk with Weyland Yutani.
They don't spoil anything and give you an idea of what the film is about.
Jack Reacher had good trailers. Had no f'n idea what the movie was going to be like. Ended up being pretty good.

You know what, weirdly, is an excellent trailer? End Of The Line. Seriously, it sets up the premise, some of the characters, and a bit of action to get you interested.

That was totally how action movie trailers were in the late-90's early 2000's. I remember a lot of movies having word by word or sentence by sentence cuts when I was a kid, sometimes with a narrator.
Probably the worst offender:

Check 2:39
The trailer of How to Train your Dragon 2 literally revealed and ruined the mystery of part of the plot. [SP] HEY LET'S SHOW THEM THAT HICCUP'S MOM IS ALIVE 6 MONTHS BEFORE RELEASING THE MOVIE! [/sp]
