Opinions!
...are probably better delivered in a separate post (because if only 3 users disagree with you, everyone else is gonna jump on board and rate the OP based on your opinions and not the article).
I imagine Facebook would eventually just have a VR button on a page to enter the mmo. If they can make it that simple I can see it working. Its 1 billion potential users.
Something Awful made a funny little article about this http://www.somethingawful.com/video-game-article/oculus-mmo-billion/
I'm going to pick a developer who most of you are familiar with, Tim Schafer. Here's how he might have designed a game in the past: "Hey guys, I've been jotting down character, story, and thematic ideas in this notebook for years. I think we have some fun stuff to work with. Let's bring in some of our ridiculously talented artists to visualize these concepts. We'll get super inspired by their work and collaborate on the direction of the game. I have complete faith in the creativity of this studio." Now here is the correct way for Tim to design a game: "Hey guys, my idea for an adventure game is that it's the best-selling adventure game ever made. Pretty good idea, right? I'm thinking it should sell more than the latest Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto installments combined. That sounds like a very nice game."

They want to make a billion person MMO but good luck actually succeeding. It might be feasible in a couple of decades or so.
I think it's more like they want design and make sure a billion user MMO works in terms of technicalities and such.
I should just start banning people for being so inexcusably naive and uninformed this late after the bandwagon died out [editline]e[/editline] but this was still way dumber
Is there something I'm missing? Evil company buys new technology=New technology is used for evil. It's not opinions, it's goddamn common sense! To me it seems fairly black and white, But i understand for others it might not be.
Is there something I'm missing? Evil company buys new technology=New technology is used for evil. It's not opinions, it's goddamn common sense! To me it seems fairly black and white, But i understand for others it might not be.
seeing this as black and white isn't really something to be proud of as views go, few things really are black and white. in this case, there's a lot left for us to figure out in the future, but instantly thinking because Facebook has some less than admirable policies enacted on their own service, that an entirely different sub company of Facebook will be meddled with is unfounded. Facebook hasn't interfered with the companies it's bought into. Seemingly, Zuckerberg understand the key in having good companies working for you is buying them to do what that company set out to do and monetize that. Now, as to how the Oculous Rift can be used for "evil" i'm not sure what the hell anyone who brings this up thinks this can be used for. What? Is it going to scan your retinas? Is it going to lock you into a facebook account? Is it going to track your every movement that your head makes? What exactly can it be used for evil for? I'll do what I think is best, which is to wait and see what happens rather than make preemptive judgements.
I play a game with 7 billion people active on the server daily.. it's really not all that great, I doubt a 1 billion version would be any better.
Yeah, but the success of Zynga and King is probably what FB wants to emulate. They sure as heck aren't seeing numbers anywhere close to that anywhere else.
Emulate the success of Zynga? You mean bubble and then become worthless and irrelevant?
Vote with your wallet? Isn't this what capitalism is good for? If you don't like shovelware, don't buy shovelware. They will see there's a market there and make what you want.
It's funny because shitty games keep coming out and I keep not buying them.
the 'vote with your wallet' thing is irrelevant when it comes to things like stupid apps with shittons of microtransactions. Remember that recent figures list that showed something like 0.2% of all mobile gamers make up for more than 50% of the sales in that shit good thing the oculus is only a screen and facebook's proposal isn't "hey let's make bejeweled but you pay for moves"

Design changes that take a few days to get used to does not make a company evil.
It's funny because shitty games keep coming out and I keep not buying them.
Then you're doing good? I don't see the problem here, you're not getting games you don't like and getting games you do. Are you implying the entire industry should cater to your tastes on what is good or not? That is a very childish thing if you are implicating that
Since when is Facebook an evil company? Design changes that take a few days to get used to does not make a company evil.
Their main source of income is a "social media" website designed to bring us as a society back a few steps intelligence wise, and rot the minds of it's users. Have you ever seen anything on that website that suggests it's users have had any formal or informal education?
they're being incredibly optimistic. even Runescape has only 200 million registered users, good luck making an MMO with 1 billion active ones
Having 1/7 of the population stuck in VR is some creepy shit.

Companies pay facebook $X to get their ads out to Y# of people, so every 'hit' counts. FB can charge more because they can guarantee that the people who see the ads will be more likely to find them interesting that's it that's facebook
If anyone has read "Ready, Player One" I totally see this becoming like the OASIS system.
