Well considering how integral and frequently used it is, it IS something they shouldn't have dicked with unless it was in dire need for it.

Honestly in the whole argument that broke out did everyone forget the fact that there ARE very portable mice and even keyboards?

Unless you don't have a full size laptop then you don't really need one.
I can operate, and have operated fine by just putting the mouse on the usually flat surface that occupies the bottom right of the laptop keyboard, sure it isn't entirely suitable for gaming but neither is gimmicky expensive shit like a touch screen on the laptop screen itself.
If that isn't enough then I just use one of my legs.

The new start menu is a re-done "show desktop". It forces me to break my concentration and pay attention to this new thing that is now taking up my entire screen to show me a massive ass amount of information and buttons when ALL I WANT is to open a notepad/command prompt. They've hidden most of the settings I find useful and my usual test of "how easy is it to get to network adapter settings" failed on the last 4 windows 8 machines I tried it on. I have tried it, its big, bulky, discourages multitasking, and doesn't fit a single usage pattern I've ever had for any machine ever.

Am I an idiot for not wanting to use a shitty track pad or mouse? I'll use a mouse if the work requires it, but you'll still have to have a surface to place that thing on, and in the case of an airplane, car, bur or train, it'd be pretty cramped. Are you just angry at touch for whatever reason or can you really not see that it has its place?

touch is out of place on non convertibles, get over it
might be ok if all you do is whine on forums
My main issue with windows 8 is that stupid Metro bullshit. My mom got a new touchscreen laptop for christmas with W8 installed. It takes me WAY longer to find what the fuck I'm looking for (specifically when she asks me a question regarding her laptop) than should be allowed. When I have to sift through tons of tabs just to find 1 little thing, something is wrong.

I've been talking about hybrids all along, like the XPS 12 and so on. Apparently it's not only people wanting touchscreens that are complete idiots. Then again, that's probably okay if all you do is post in SH and FT.

I don't really think convertibles are sensible yet either
the software is far from being viable for it to be of any kind of use
It's less hassle to just sit down and use the keyboard instead of the touch capability solely, kind of what the rest of the thread has been arguing about
What are the advantages of a touchscreen? Give me some legitimate reasons that actually provide for a good workspace that would make me buy a convertible instead of an android tablet.
[editline]3rd January 2013[/editline]
touch anything is complete and utter bollocks for anything CLI, so that's one huge mark down, actually, general word processing.
Graphics? another mark down. You'd be using a graphics tablet if you're actually serious. Browsing? ok. but it doesn't improve an awful lot for me specifically, I'd rather use a notched scrollwheel because it's more accurate, pinch is more like a gimmick than anything else.

I'm not trying to sell you a convertible at all, I just personally happen to like one. That apparently makes me an idiot, and if it does let me be one. I won't force it on you. Let me ask you a question - what does a kb/mouse provide over kb/mouse and touchscreen? It's not like it makes the products worse, and after all it's not something you will be forced to buy. Let me have the option if I want it, it's not gonna make a difference to you either way.
Let me make use of an analogy I used earlier on:
You and I are getting some fries. Ketchup costs 1$. We both have a choice; with or without? You're like "I ain't touching that shit, bro" and I'm more in the "yeah, ketchup's pretty nice I'll have sum of dat". In the end, we're both eating fries, but I enjoy it with something extra, though it may not appeal to everyone.
The good thing about that analogy is that it's pretty hard to explain to you why you should like ketchup. You'd have to try it yourself and form an opinion on it.
So touchscreens are like tomato sauce, they go good on sausage rolls.
what does a kb/mouse provide over kb/mouse and touchscreen?
Exceptionally lower build cost at no loss in interaction or features.
And more information displayed on the same amount of screen real estate.
But Tomato sauce is good on anything.
Can you tell me exactly how a touchwcreen will impact the UI in windows 8? And let's assume price is no problem at all - after all I have acknowledged it quite a few times myself. Can you tell me how exactly the touchscreen version is worse functionality wise? I suggest you read my ketchup argument.

Can I use the entire start screen as my example?
I'm not going to say the start menu is better. I'm saying the start screen is an incredible piece of shit if you're using it with a mouse and keyboard, and I can provide many examples as to why.
We'll avoid talking about the 'bloat' that desktop windows take on to accommodation touch screen controls for now.
But Tomato sauce is good on anything.
Not really.
Ketchup definitely isn't good on everything either. But on fries it's pretty good.

well, the start screen is the same size whether you're using touch or not. On the desktop I'll just revert to keyboard and mouse. So what exactly is the weakness?

That is the weakness. The start screen has one design -- Touch screen design.
Why is it a bar at the bottom when you right click? Why isn't it instead a context menu that requires less mouse movement? Because it's been designed for a touch screen interface and therefore has all of the downsides of one.
The problem is that you end up with something like Windows 8. A dead-in-the-water OS with no clear design goals that doesn't benefit anyone. My only hope is that it remains that way so nobody makes this mistake again.
I've been using windows 8 for a couple of months now and I don't regret the upgrade, Even though I rarely touch the metro I love the hot keys they have setup for example Windows key + Q Brings up a handy search feature in metro to look for programs (Bye bye start) and you can also use the default desktop :)

What does Win + Q have to do with anything though? In the old design you can just smack win and then start typing to search. Why does dealing with all of the bloat metro adds aid that experience? (Or in this case avoiding)
In fact, you've got it worse now because you can't look for control panel items via the metro search, where as the old Windows Search in the start menu found them just fine. Instead, you have to open an explorer window and use that search bar.
umm people still use windows? lol just buy a mac, my dad buys me all the apple products and they are the greatest :D
Well I don't like the Metro interface, and the absolute biggest reason is how the search works.
In W7 I clicked the start button and typed in something to find a file I needed, GPU-Z for example.
In W8 I have to move it to the top right, then click search, which fills up the whole screen with the metro background, which is unnecessary for what I want to do. Then the worst part is - searching for it yields nothing. Even when I change the search to 'files' there are no results. For the bigger programs, they come up in the search, but things that exist as standalone executable files that I use a lot (hwinfo, CPU-Z, etc.) don't even show up in the search. I need Start8 for that functionality now.
On the bright side, the boot time is 10 seconds with my SSD lol.
[editline]3rd January 2013[/editline]
In general, it just takes more work and sifting through interfaces and pages to get to the same result.
[editline]3rd January 2013[/editline]
However, I do enjoy the aesthetic style of W8 a lot.
I'm all for Windows having support for touch screen... but it should NOT be the main design. Windows should focus on mouse and keyboard, because that's what their target audience in majority use for gaming, chatting, surfing, and work. Their main design should be focused on this, but I'm perfectly alright with a secondary optional design for people with touch screens.
