I saw "Ubisoft to stop including..." and got my hopes up. :( ...This is pretty damned stupid though. Seems to me retail games in general won't be lasting much longer.
Fuck. You. Ubisoft.
I absolutely adored manuals. I always flipped through them reading every single bit (when manuals were huge, not the stupid black and white pamphlet they include now-a-days). I always thought it was so awesome to have a little book with everything you needed to know right next to your desk. X-Com, Civ series, etc. It was also really awesome when they had really creative manuals that were bound differently or had cool artwork. Edit: Besides I hate reading from a computer screen for detailed information. Although it's not like Ubisoft have been making games that involve more than competent motor skills. Where are my incredibly tough and involving games?! Oh well Ubi, you are making some pretty shit decisions lately. Their DRM got cracked like everyone else's (albeit it took longer but still not full proof )
Civ had an entire encyclopedia ingame.
They probably want to save some money so they can afford more pointless DRM.
$3 DLC Video game Manual
$3 DLC Video game Manual
+$300,00 extra if ordering a physical copy
Hahahaha. Keep fucking that chicken, Ubisoft, your sales will only plummet further.
:gonk:
It will be a sad day when we lose the trusty manual... *Sniff*
The two manuals I'll always remember would be for Klingon Academy and Starcraft.
I remember when manuals were incredibly thick because they had all the languages of the EU in there. I used to try and remember phrases and hope I learned something, I didn't, but still.
I remember how you could beat someone to death with the world of warcraft manual.
They're just trying to save as much money as the pirates "steal" from them because their shitty DRM.
When I was a kid I brought the manuals into class for reading time. I mean come on, Kings Quest 4 and the Twisted Metal Black had cool ones, and they are pretty interesting, since you can learn more about the characters past and such. And shit you never knew until reading it.
Doesn't make that much of a difference to me. Game manuals stopped being interesting for me for the most part a few years back.
Anyone remember the Star Wars KOTOR manual? Beautiful thick booklet with full color and nice illustrations taken right from the game. I miss those days now it's some shitty paper pamphlet that simply states the controls, you're not losing much but the box will feel empty without them.
What shits me is having the CDKEY on the manual so you OFFICIALLY DON'T OWN THE GAME ONCE YOU LOOSE THE ffffFFUCCKING MANUAL It's enough to make you MURDER PEOPLE
About as environmentally friendly as screen doors on submarines.
Wait, wait, hold up everyone. They're making a Shawn White Skateboarding too? I thought they learned from the Snowboarding one. Also
Who the fuck cares about the environment? I want a blog of paper that tells me that the green button makes me jump!

It's not like manuals these days are worth shit anyways. I haven't laid eyes on the inside of a manual for years. Waste of money, paper and ink. Now back in the day they damn well knew how to make manuals. I mean, at least half the enjoyment in Homeworld comes from the fact that the manual really makes the world come alive with backstory and fiction. And Starcraft wouldn't have been the same without the extensive backstory. But nowadays they're little but glorified reference cards, often without a lot of critical information.
This is what the exposition in the opening cutscenes and in the actual game narrative are for.
Do people even read them?
While environmentally speaking, this is a great idea While reminiscentally speaking, its a terrible idea and only further detaches me from fond memories of opening up a new game and smelling the fresh scent of a new manual and thumbing through it.
Farewell manuals, soon other companies will follow. Prepare for the end guys.
What with the shitty DRM and now this, ubisoft seems to want all their customers to stop buying from them.
I never ever read manuals except the nostalgia, For example Opposing force's manual had alot of story backing in it about Shepard, Sort of like a daily journal of life @ camp etc. And the Half-Life manual has pretty cool development pictures in it.
I read manuals to see if there's any backstory or what stuff does. Like reading what the weapons or units are.
But what will keep me amused on the bus ride home? :(
Goddamn all they put in them these days are the controls, HUD and the story. Everything else is legal stuff and how to install.
If they're going to get rid of something to protect the environment, it should be the fucking plastic cases they come in. They could at least be reduced in size now that there's no manual inside.
It should happen, I don't even fucking think that people look at the manuals since 2002.
Holy shit. Ubisoft are the biggest bunch of faggots. First they have stupid DRM, now they're trying to save paper? I enjoy my manuals with art illustrations. I'm a materialistic person, and I like to have this shit. Fucking Ubisoft. To SAVE THE ENVIRUNOEMTN.
