Can you really deem something day1DLC if it's for a free-to-play game?
Yes. If it was only cosmetics, or there were alternative ways to unlock the characters... I wouldn't call it day1dlc... however since it's something that provides a significant change to gameplay that is only available for purchase, and it's ready to be added into the game right upon launch but is not available as part of the rest of the game, I consider it day1dlc.

It's not the worst case we've ever seen, but I still think it's a horrible marketing strategy.
I think more people would have enjoyed purchasing the game and being given a solid cast of characters to find your favorite among, to later on being offered more characters as dlc... rather than being given a single character for free, and if you want any variation in your play you have to play a guessing game of which new character will not make you feel that it wasn't worth the money you payed for it.
I think this will firstly lead to that a lot of people lose interest in the game from the lack of variation in the free version, but it will probably also give a lot of people playing the game a sensation of pay2win when facing characters with playstyles they'd want to try but can't afford to purchase.

Then let's just call it pay2win instead of day1dlc shall we? If you're running a free2play franchise, you have to make money of something, even on day one. So day1dlc really loses all meaning at that point.
It'd be interesting if they did something like LoL where you can gain the characters through playing rather than buying

I don't feel that we have enough information to call it pay2win yet, and even so it would be a significantly less flattering title than day1dlc. What we have established is only that content with major impact on gameplay is available as purchasable dlc from day 1, not that we for sure know that it will cause balance issues and a sense of unfairness among players in game.

LoL and TF2 has shown that purchasable characters or weapons is possible for a free-to-play without being pay2win, but countless of other games have shown that purchasable characters and weapons is highly likely to make free-to-play games pay2win.
This is awful. Valve hit the nail on the head with microtransactions: cosmetic items or gameplay-changing items that can -all- be found for free.
I can handle LoL because you can still unlock pretty much every hero. Dota 2 just has cosmetics and UI stuff.
A single character for F2P and every single other one being bought? That's absurd. Killer Instinct looked okay but there's no way I'm looking at it again.
People still buy fighting games? Interesting...
First DOA 5 started doing this, then Tekken and now this? Wow fighting games are going to crash.
That's Microshit for you...
Guys, how would the company make profit if they didn't charge you for each character? Fools.
idk maybe creating a solid fighter.
Xbone doesn't have used games anyways.
You ever played those old Demo discs that came with the Playstation 1/2?
There were Tekken demos on there and they were nowhere near as bare as this is
[editline]11th June 2013[/editline]
They certainly didn't give you one fucking character that's for sure
I remember the Tekken 3 demos having at least two characters, still tho, i have very fond memories of the original KI and this looks like shit
Microsoft how are you so ignorant, but it's okay hopefully Microsoft will miss out on loads of profit like they deserve and end up with less money than they started with.
Remember the days where you just unlocked all the bonus extra characters in fighting games?
Now it's come to the point where we're paying to play the actual main characters
So, is this a whole game Laming it out like XTekken?

It's Microsoft, inventors of the NSA Spy devi- I mean Kinect and "fuck you for wanting to buy used games" console, what did you really expect? :v:

That's the last time I try to be funny.
So the only reason I would touch an Xbox One is now gone.

Now that one free character will become known as the "mingebag" character.
"Killer Instinct is dumb"
All respect lost, IGN.
No thanks I'll play the SNES version
Microsoft seems hell-bent on running the Xbox One into the ground. They can't even make a Killer Instinct game without hopelessly fucking up and have to resort to giving free games to people in order to keep them paying for Xbox Live Gold. I can't believe people still want to buy this shit!
HAHAHAHAHA HOLY SHIT
That's the last time I try to be funny.
If this was Injustice on iOS, I would of rated it funny, but this is motherfucking Killer Instinct
What do you do with a big name game from the SNES era coming back for the newest generations?
Certainly not give everyone the chance to see just how shit the game is (IF it is shit, that is) without even forcing consumers to buy anything.
That's terrible business strategy, they could learn something from EA here.
What kind of pointless feature is that?
