• Gender Quotas to be Enforced on Comedy Panel Shows by BBC

No no no Don't put women on a panel show because you feel you have to put women on a panel show because they're funny Enforcing quotas just makes the people the quota favors feel devalued, as they're only being put on a show to improve statistics rather than being actually recognised for their talent.
this is a good idea, hope it works well
this is like saying "it's a good idea to make it so the next prime minister is female despite qualifications and standards because we haven't had enough female prime ministers"
I just think it's funny, people get so defensive about stuff And anyway why not let more women on panel shows, as it stands most panel shows are just boys club willy waving competitions.
I just think it's funny, people get so defensive about stuff
Because it's a serious issue that will affect us all
And anyway why not let more women on panel shows, as it stands most panel shows are just boys club willy waving competitions.
Sure, if they're actually funny then why not. That's not an excuse for gender quotas though
I just think it's funny, people get so defensive about stuff And anyway why not let more women on panel shows, as it stands most panel shows are just boys club willy waving competitions.
let's reverse the situation; the majority of comedians are now female, and we put a gender quota, 50% women, 50% men only 20% of those men who have been chosen to participate in the panel show are proper comedians, the rest are mediocre to obscure tryhards with either no background in comedy or have never gotten a crowd to laugh would you sincerely watch that show
Because it's a serious issue that will affect us all
Why? It's comedy panel shows on the TV, you don't even have to watch it if you don't want to
Why? It's comedy panel shows on the TV, you don't even have to watch it if you don't want to
I'm not talking about this show in particular. I don't want to see gender quotas enforced anywhere
This is my problem with feminism and equality. They try to squeeze women into everything for the sake of it, even if those women are not fit for the role resulting in lower quality results.
I just think it's funny, people get so defensive about stuff And anyway why not let more women on panel shows, as it stands most panel shows are just boys club willy waving competitions.
It's not about letting more women on, there's nothing restricting women to come on the shows. It's about enforcing a quote, which is ridiculous because the shows are supposed to be about humour, so funny people get on, not about if there's men or women on the show.
I don't see a reason to have a quota - as long as female applicants aren't ignored for being female.
The idea behind these quotas is to forcefully turn the working environment into less of a sausage fest because jobs heavily dominated by one gender can easily become very unattractive for the other gender. lol male nurse lol gurl gamer in the industry etc. The preferential treatment based on gender instead of skill that results from this makes this praxis highly questionable of course, and probably also doesn't earn the women a lot of respect from their peers either, which is the whole point of this thing.

If it means more new talent that's great, if it means a funny but overlooked female comedian is more likely to be on the show, again that's great. You're seriously all making yourselves look more MRA by getting defensive
Why? It's comedy panel shows on the TV, you don't even have to watch it if you don't want to
But I do want to watch it, because it's fun. I see no reason to enforce a gender quota and force less funny people on the show for no reason other than to. Actually there's no good reason to do that at all. [editline]9th February 2014[/editline]
How do you know they're just going to put "mediocre to obscure tryhards" on the shows? You're seriously all making yourselves look more MRA by getting defensive
People get chosen to be on the show because they're funny and because they're willing to come on. All enforcing a quota will do is ensure less funny people get on as funny women already do get on the show.
I hope this doesn't mean that Jo Brand is going to be forcefully slapped into every panel show. Whenever I hear her name on QI I immediately turn to a different channel.
Jo brand is like the only good female panelist on QI man. Well, her and Mitchell's woman whatever her name is.
How do you know they're just going to put "mediocre to obscure tryhards" on the shows? If it means more new talent that's great, if it means a funny but overlooked female comedian is more likely to be on the show, again that's great.
Gender quotas give women the unfair advantage over men, and we don't like it, that's all. We should fix discrimination altogether, not replace negative discrimination with positive discrimination
Waaaa this is misandry My MRA group will be hearing about this

You're seriously all making yourselves look more MRA by getting defensive
nobody here is even acting like one this is just as stupid as when people call anyone who defend women "sjws" and scream "go back to tumblr!!!"
You're seriously all making yourselves look more MRA by getting defensive
It's something for both MRA and Feminists to be angry about, since it promotes gender inequality in the sense that women are being picked for being women, and men are picked for being funny.

You're seriously all making yourselves look more MRA by getting defensive
A quota is a lazy bureaucratic way of promoting equality because it's so simple. The hopeful upside is it promotes more female comedians, no-one is denying that. The issue is that a quota is ridiculously easy to subvert it's original goal, doesn't take into account factors such as how suitable it is for that show style and target audience, and can quite easily damage the quality of the show by putting bad people on just to fill the quota. Solely from the method of a quota, it is a poor solution, at best only temporary, and hides the problem without promoting better solutions.
nobody here is even acting like one this is just as stupid as mras who call anyone who defend women "sjws" and scream "go back to tumblr!!!"
It's just the female hating vibes that I'm getting from this thread These sorts of discussions never seem like a discussion about equality but more about a discussion about the threat women pose to men. I just don't feel this conversation would ever go this way if it was held in the real world.
I hope this doesn't mean that Jo Brand is going to be forcefully slapped into every panel show. Whenever I hear her name on QI I immediately turn to a different channel.
Don't you like her 809th telling of the same Husband joke, though?

Generally after a few years it just makes it worse.
You guys are acting like this quota will mean that they'll just grab any old woman of the street and stick her on TV. They probably shouldn't have used the word quota
Jo brand is like the only good female panelist on QI man. jo brand is fucking awful though
You guys are acting like this quota will mean that they'll just grab any old woman of the street and stick her on TV. They probably shouldn't have used the word quota
They didn't; describing this as a quota is OP's doing
if this is seriously woman hating then what the christ
What part of CoolCorky's post is woman hating?
They didn't; describing this as a quota is OP's doing
Boom, nothing to worry about then.
Boom, nothing to worry about then.
They didn't use the word quota but quota is still an accurate way of describing it.
there has been a steep drop in quality on QI since this sort of "gender quota" has happened there will never be a sean locke+bill bailey+david mitchell panel on QI again and that is really fucking shit tbh i fucking loathe sue perkins and jo brand used to be alright on the show but the last 5 years have devolved into shitty "muh husband is shit" jokes and it really gets on my nerves
