• Gender Quotas to be Enforced on Comedy Panel Shows by BBC

classic QI was best anyway.. classic Top Gear was best. The only good things to come out of the BBC these days is the documentaries and sport coverage. The rest is a pile of toot.
The idea behind these quotas is to forcefully turn the working environment into less of a sausage fest because jobs heavily dominated by one gender can easily become very unattractive for the other gender. lol male nurse lol gurl gamer in the industry etc. The preferential treatment based on gender instead of skill that results from this makes this praxis highly questionable of course, and probably also doesn't earn the women a lot of respect from their peers either, which is the whole point of this thing.
There are quotas for male nurses?
I don't mind this JUST AS LONG AS SARAH MILLICAN DOES NOT SHOW HER FACE She's about as funny as Milton Jones - that is, not remotely funny whatsoever.
I don't see a reason to have a quota - as long as female applicants aren't ignored for being female.
That's why they're doing it. Because they are ignored.
Now watch as the resentful network execs pick the least funny female comics they can find for every panel
“People think that it’s the census or something,” he observed of comedy in general. “It’s gotta represent the actual pie chart of America. Who cares?” “Funny is the world that I live in,” he concluded. “You’re funny, I’m interested. You’re not funny, I’m not interested. And I have no interest in gender, or race, or anything like that.” The comedian added that he believed it is effectively “anti-comedy” to impose gender or race-based quotas on standup. “He seems to suggest that any comedian who is not a white male is also not funny,” Chayka asserted, based on nothing more than his own passionate belief in the inherent necessity of gender and race-based quotas.
Meanwhile
That might just deserve its own thread.
Seinfeld is not relevant.
That's why they're doing it. Because they are ignored.
Are they, though? Are you sure there isn't just generally less females interested in a career in comedy?
The only female guest on Qi that I have thought really dragged down the episode was Nina Conti, simply because I thought the whole puppet thing was out of place. I still think a quota is kind of an odd idea though, it kind of implies that women on the show will just be there to cover a requirement rather than due to their ability.
The only female guest on Qi that I have thought really dragged down the episode was Nina Conti, simply because I thought the whole puppet thing was out of place.
At least they had Bill Bailey in that episode.
At least they had Bill Bailey in that episode.
He saves that episode.
That smug one with the really thin glasses, almost definitely a Guardianite, I think her name is Sue something - kill her
is this a daily mail parody post?
late
He saves that episode.
Him and Sean both.
I don't mind, most of them, if not funny, are at least interesting enough to no detract from the show. Except for Katherine Ryan. I'd rather have four puppet ladies than her.
It's just the female hating vibes that I'm getting from this thread These sorts of discussions never seem like a discussion about equality but more about a discussion about the threat women pose to men. I just don't feel this conversation would ever go this way if it was held in the real world.
Its like every single thing you've said in this thread is accusing everyone you disagree with of being evil woman hating MRAs
let's reverse the situation; the majority of comedians are now female, and we put a gender quota, 50% women, 50% men only 20% of those men who have been chosen to participate in the panel show are proper comedians, the rest are mediocre to obscure tryhards with either no background in comedy or have never gotten a crowd to laugh would you sincerely watch that show
Sounds like panel shows now.
How do you know they're just going to put "mediocre to obscure tryhards" on the shows? If it means more new talent that's great, if it means a funny but overlooked female comedian is more likely to be on the show, again that's great. You're seriously all making yourselves look more MRA by getting defensive
le ad hom face

What I see a strong dislike for quotas which is understandable.
This is my problem with feminism and equality. They try to squeeze women into everything for the sake of it, even if those women are not fit for the role resulting in lower quality results.
As if feminism is this just one thing. There are many different and opposing perspectives that can be classed as feminist, so stop trying to reduce everything down to the point of idiocy. Making broad swipes like this makes you look foolish.
Only woman I love to watch on QI is Sandi Toksvig. Quick, smart and funny. Wish she was a guest more.
To be fair I think if she was on any more often she might as well just be a regular. I get the feeling her and Stephen Fry are quite good friends.
Imho I don't see a dislike for women. What I see a strong dislike for quotas which is understandable.
I don't believe quotas are necessary for women to achieve equality; if anything they're counterproductive since
A quota would just hurt the image of female programmers, since people would look at the quota instead of their skills. We'll probably see more women entering tech as computers become even more prevalent and the culture shifts, which is happening pretty quickly.

jo brand is the loveliest lady. why the hate ?
From what I can work out from other sites and forums people hate her because she dares makes jokes about her anatomy, sex life and relationships. You know, stuff that male comedians get away with all the time. Personally I think she is hilarious, if you haven't watched it you should watch the sitcom she is responsible for that was on BBC4, "getting on".
Lol. Surely TV shows should pick the best for the roles, and not be forced into picking sub-par performers?
Can we just have Noel Fielding do everything cause he looks close enough to a woman to pass off as one. [editline]9th February 2014[/editline] Actually no just bring back the Mighty Boosh that will solve everything.

Which is true enough, I guess. The jokes themselves are generally pretty unique, though.
I don't believe quotas are necessary for women to achieve equality; if anything they're counterproductive since
Yeah I was kind of laughing when I saw this. Yesterday I get the shit beat out of me for saying that quotas are stupid, now since it's a thing they directly have to face, suddenly quotas are bad.
