I don't wanna sound hurtful, but get Giffords off the stage for this stuff. You don't have to keep reminding us of the victims to get bills passed. It's shameful and manipulative.
Honestly disappointed in our country for not passing this. This was the only thing that I had hoped to pass. At least close the loopholes for fucks sake!
There is no "loophole". Calling private sales a loophole was just made up by gun grabbing democrats.
Is that the Sandy Hook victims standing behind with him?
and god damn is Obama butt devastated
There is no "loophole". Calling private sales a loophole was just made up by gun grabbing democrats.
ummm what
Biden is crying fucking hard with the other peeps. What bullshit. A provision failed to pass, stop acting like it's the renewal of Sandy Hook.
They're overblowing it. Why are they focusing so hard on this gun legislation? They've already rejected the part of it that made the most sense, anyway. Doesn't Congress have more pressing matters, like the goddamn sequestration? Why not the myriad other things to which time would be better dedicated?
There is no "loophole". Calling private sales a loophole was just made up by gun grabbing democrats.
I consider it a loophole. I also consider gun shows a loophole.
Where is he getting this 90 percent from?
Where is he getting this 90 percent from?
facepunch
I consider it a loophole. I also consider gun shows a loophole.
uhhh okay well that's your odd opinion I can't really argue with it other than telling you a private sale is a private sale. [editline]17th April 2013[/editline]
Where is he getting this 90 percent from?
1 survey that was done a while back.
Honestly disappointed in our country for not passing this. This was the only thing that I had hoped to pass. At least close the loopholes for fucks sake!
What loophole?
I wish he would move on to other things in his administration, honestly. I mean, i get where he's coming from, but with the Republicans vowing to block any bill that has the word "gun" in it, it just seems like a wasted effort.
uhh why should a private sale not be regulated
I wish he would move on to other things in his administration, honestly. I mean, i get where he's coming from, but with the Republicans vowing to block any bill that has the word "gun" in it, it just seems like a wasted effort.
It really is a wasted effort and gun control is a stupid thing to be wasting administrative time and resources on considering the much larger issues concerning the country that need fixing.
Not sure how I feel about this...
There's still massive loopholes in gun legislation. For instance, straw purchases are pretty common enough: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2937134/
Using a scripted telephone interview, we screened a sample of licensed retailers in California to assess their willingness to participate in the surrogate or “straw” purchase of a handgun; such purchases are illegal under federal law. Of 149 retailers who provided a response, 30 (20.1%) agreed to participate.

uhh why should a private sale not be regulated
How would you do it? There's no way you could effectively regulate them. Two guys meet up on Craigslist and trade someplace. Where does the background check enforcement come in?
Where is he getting this 90 percent from?
The same place you find poop.
Brian Williams sounds depressed as hell.
Brian Williams sounds depressed as hell.
Thats how he always sounds tho

Straw purchases are already illegal, how can you make them double illegal? I might be wrong but I think they are already a felony.
I consider it a loophole. I also consider gun shows a loophole.
Why the fuck would you call a gunshow a loophole? You have to get background checked when you buy guns at them... Nobody is going to be able to stop private gun sales either, not really a loophole when it cant be fixed.
"I consider this is only round one" Almost sounded like a thwarted villain threatening his next escapade :v:

I don't get the problem with background checks. Are most gun owners felons or something? I mean jesus if you are responsible as a person you should have no problem keeping your firearm. I love mine and I have no problem with having a background check because I'm not a terrible person.
I find it not stupid so much as pointless. How many deaths and mass shootings have resulted from the lack of a background check? The Sandy Hook shooter stole the guns. edit: I get dumbs for speaking the truth?
It's not like mass shootings are the only form of gun violence.
How would you do it? There's no way you could effectively regulate them. Two guys meet up on Craigslist and trade someplace. Where does the background check enforcement come in?
If the firearm is used in a crime, you charge the last registered owner as an accessory to the crime and make them ineligible to own firearms. Make it clear that if they do it, they'll have to feel the repercussions.
It's not like mass shootings are the only form of gun violence.
It's not like this legislation would have changed or helped those either.
I don't get what point you're trying to make. Straw purchases are already illegal, how can you make them double illegal? I might be wrong but I think they are already a felony.
Be stricter with who can have a license to sell guns obviously. If 20% of gun salesmen are unfit to sell guns, you need to have 20% less gun salesmen.
I don't get the problem with background checks. Are most gun owners felons or something? I mean jesus if you are responsible as a person you should have no problem keeping your firearm. I love mine and I have no problem with having a background check because I'm not a terrible person.
Because the only way to enforce it (the "universal background checks" that is) creates a de facto gun registry and would necessarily bar private sales (although I believe family was an exception). Also the fact that it wouldn't cut down on gun violence, because all these spree shooters either got their guns legally through a background check that they will pass anyway or illegally like Lanza killing his mom. Not to mention it has literally no effect on the black market/illegal transactions, which is where the vast majority of criminals get their guns. [editline]17th April 2013[/editline] also just on a constitutional rights basis:
Firearms ownership is a right. And in the U.S., that means a few things. Chiefly that firearms ownership may not be taxed and may not be registered. The Supreme Court and the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA) have reinforced this: enumerated rights have a protected status. Unlike property, income or health insurance, rights cannot be taxed and registries are prohibited.
universal background checks would go directly against this
