Donald Trump calls for 'ridiculous' new Boeing Air Force One to be scrapped
Air Force One is a 747 is appearance alone. The inside is completely redone in both the systems used and how the plane is structured. They are shielded against electromagnetic pulses, can refuel mid-flight, and probably a bunch of other things that we aren't allowed to know. They operate as the mobile command center for the President during times of war or crisis, and they did during 9/11. Boeing is hiring people specifically for this project and most of the tooling and machinery used is unique and one off.
Aerospace isn't cheap, and we wouldn't want the symbol of the United States and the vehicle responsible for his safe travel being built by the lowest bidder would we?
While it isn't the AF1, heres a tour of one of the other SHTF government planes:

Did the taxpayers pay for Trump's penthouse? Why are you complaining?
It shows an example of priorities.
I know you're trying to miss the point, but please, it doesn't help anyone, ever
You're talking about the figurehead of the most powerful country on Earth. A flying fortress isn't out of the question when it comes to protecting our president.
But a 4 billion flying fortress program?
4 billion, just to make the planes, not just run it...
Apparently no one really knows where the $4 billion valuation came from:

Unless he got confidential information about the real price that he ended up leaking.

Regardless, there's reports of Boeing over-inflating their spending in military contracts. Someone told me $40 a bolt bad, although that might have been an exaggeration as well.
4 billion over 5 years to buy new planes
Air Force One has become one of the most visible American symbols.
Is it really? Do people really imagine an airplane when they think of America?
Is it really? Do people really imagine an airplane when they think of America?
That's not what that means at all... It means that people see it flying around and landing wherever the president goes.

That's not even that much compared to what we've spent already. B-2 spirit cost $2.1 billion each and we have 21 of them

You really just can't comprehend why it's important of the president to have the best possible plane, can you?

Just trying to make a cost benefit analysis... for example if 200 million of the 4 billion is just so the plane is structurally redesigned enough so it can carry a massive marble bathroom then yea, 3.8 billion should be fine.
I just wanna know just how bloated this project is, or if its the muscle on bone projection antilope of efficiency (hah, fat chance).
