In my own opinion, having used weed quite a few times.
It's pretty much the same as taking a few beers. People who drink a lot of beers / get drunk, won't be productive. Therefore they'll fail school.
Same goes for weed. If you use it a lot, you won't be productive while high. And you'll fail school too.
Me and my friends all used weed regurarely, but we knew when to use it and when not to. Just for hanging out and stuff, it's fine. But when something important's coming up? Then not.
The article talks about smoking daily, so yea, it's no wonder people will have trouble in school.
Being drunk or high on a daily basis will have a negative impact on anything you do.
Do you attribute you smoking to your grades raising?
From C+ to A- average? I'd say so. It made me more lax and allowed me to make abstract connections better. As a result I never stressed on a test and thus never really blanked.

I smoked every day, though I can't say I was super high ever day. I usually avoided smoking too much right before school otherwise I would just be more high than would have benefited me. Though, that isn't to say I didn't smoke right before school.
Never smoked a cigarette or weed, but I smoke cigars at parties and special occasions.
Of course someone who'd have the money and time to indulge in weed on a daily basis isn't going to be a good high school student. There's a time and place for everything and if you actually decide to smoke that much weed on a daily basis instead of studying you're a fucking moron.
is anyone else going to point out those ridiculously large margins of error on those graphs
i mean it basically means that some of those correlations range in severity from minor to "oh dear lord call in the national guard"
Wait, is it true that stoners are more likely to commit suicide than non-smokers? I thought weed was used to help with depression and such.
[editline]12th September 2014[/editline]
I'd assume it's not the weed that makes people suicidal but other causes that make them smoke so much.
As stated, I think it's up to the crowd the person hangs out with. I know some people who smoke but are happy to get to work on school related stuff, because they have a good mentality for that sort of thing

my psychiatrist asked me if I smoked weed sometime when I first started going to her, and she strongly warned me to not to smoke it as it would most likely worsen my condition. sounds kinda true as weed can cause panic attacks, increased anxiety, depression and paranoia as short term effects
Well yeah I'd bet the same would be true for alcohol. Someone that uses it recreationally, say maybe on their weekends would fair better.

That was actually the stick out point in the article for me. The increased suicide risk. One has to wonder if it's an effect of the the reduced grades and dropping out of school, or the use of harder substances. Or possibly if a certain mechanism in THC itself causes a increased risk/severity of depression, and consequentially suicide risk. Even spitballing further, maybe it has certain interactions with SSRIs that are prescribed regularly to fight depression, which often increase suicide risk anyway.

Cannabis Sativa greatly increases paranoia and anxiety, while Cannabis Indica does the exact opposite. Although it being an illegal substance, it's not like there's much choice.

Might be its just people who are depressed or suffering from other problems that start using weed and commit suicide later. There might be some connection but from personal experience weed has been huge help with my depression. However now if I mention it to doctor they instantly say that its the weed that makes me depressed even though I started smoking 4 years after my depression was diagnosed. Just the illegal status alone makes these studies challenging because people are afraid to be honest how much weed they consume or admitting it at all.
I do know that smoking too much can cause you to panic and freak out. But usually if you're doing that much, there is usually an underlying problem.
It's still eons safer than the legal shit they prescribe kids these days.
Like Ritalin, that turns you into a fucking zombie or Codeine.
This isn't really about whether or not it's safe, it's more about the effect on your life.
I've smoked (cigs and weed) a few times before and I've just never seen the appeal.
It smells like shit then, and you smell like shit later. I'd much rather be drinking a good beer or whiskey than puffing this shitty smelling stick that does absolutely nothing for me.
There are so many other things I'd much rather be doing with my life. I feel like most people I see smoking are doing it because it's "cool". I just cannot see the appeal whatsoever. I'm all for legalization, but man who genuinely wants that shit.
This reminds me of a story my mother once told me. My grandfather smoked his whole life. I was about 10 years old when my mother said to him, "If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you better stop immediately." Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized exactly what was at stake. He gave it up immediately. Three years later he died of lung cancer. It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me- "Don't smoke. Please don't put your family through what your grandfather pus us through." I agreed and at 24 I have never touched a cigarette. I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it because your post gave me cancer anyways.
No shit..
Teens who get drunk daily are also 60% less likely to pass highschool, its not that supprising if you are taking large amounts of mind altering substances daily, your brain is too fried to even learn algebra
I smoke usually everyday when I got it. But, I smoke because of the chronic pain I'm in almost 24/7. I even take Hydrocodone painkillers for it all but that only helps so much. I buy in bulk now so it lasts weeks on end. I dropped out of high school for completely different reasons. Just wasn't getting it, emotional/mental trauma from shit, bullying, etc...

You know you can smoke occasionally right? Like on weekends the same way people drink on weekends, or a few times a month, once a month. Whatever you like. It doesn't have to be your life, you make it sound like once you start smoking weed, that's all you do.
This is true, as a freshman, I have 15 friends who smoke weed(including myself), 7 of them are failing and skipping school and putting pot as a higher priority than education which makes me sad.
The rest of my friends are A-B students as am I.
In my opinion I feel as it's more of a personality thing, but it probably is influenced by trees.
I smoke weed daily and I dropped out in year 10 so it ain't wrong
But I wanted to do a trade and go to TAFE so fuck all that university bullshit
Sounds a bit biased, considering the fact that the gateway theory has been dis-proven time and time again.
Your post is more indicative of your own bias if anything.
The data has nothing to do with any notions of "gateway drugs". At all.
Explains a lot lol
they say it's only good "if used in moderation" not for daily use, we talking about.... 3 times a month?
In my opinion, any mind altering substance should only be used in times and places where it does not interfere with your daily life. Example, if you drink alcohol and it causes you to call in sick at work the next day, because of a hangover or something, then you do have a drinking problem.
In the case of pot, if smoking weed interferes with your grades, or if you skip class to smoke weed, you have a substance abuse problem. It's not the weed itself, it's your inability to use responsibly.
HS students shouldnt be doing anything like this anyway; love it or not but stuff like weed can (permanently) impair the brain during growth; with that being said most people that smoke weed in highschool are usually just rebels who would fail anyway
the last part of your statement is so moronic it should have hurt for you to have said that.
the last part of your statement is so moronic it should have hurt for you to have said that.
That's just like... his opinion, man.
I didn't graduate because I got arrested and expelled for smoking weed. True story.
I was gonna ask how many of those 60% didn't graduate because they were caught smoking once.
So, something that makes you care less about shit makes you care less about shit?
Not sure if you're being sarcastic there but industrial hemp is legal
Legal where and when? Are you even thinking about context?
Hey now, I completed high school just fine. I mean I barely, BARELY completed high school, but I did it. Myth busted, I am the 40%.
Legal where and when? Are you even thinking about context?
It's legal in like 20 different US states right now. I've been to hemp shops in Oregon.
