you mean besides the fact NYPD is well know for treating blacks and other minorities like shit?

there is also the cases of those folks(including actor rob brown) who were dragged into a police station because they dared buy something expensive.
Putting words into my mouth is not going to go well. I never said that.
You have to remember that more serious crime gets a faster court date than petty crime. Now take that combined with New York ass-backwards policing and you get a 3 year wait.
hello officer id like to report a crime: the entire ny justice system and nypd

In general they treat everybody except the powerful elite like shit.
It sounds to me like he was offered the plea bargain, refused it and was sent to jail to await his trial. I don't know what the fuck happened, but he ended up waiting in jail for three years for his trial. NYC clearly violated the Sixth Amendment("In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial,"). The Federal Government defines a 'speedy trial' as one taking place within 70 days of the indictment and I see no reason why NYC should be held to a different standard.
nope he probably signed a speedy trial waiver(which is incredibly common). once you get a speedy trial waiver they could keep you imprisoned for years awaiting trial if they want to.
[editline]21st November 2013[/editline]
it just can't be "coercive". "coercion" is defined as any deal or threat that you realize is untrue before you sign the waiver.
you could have been coerced, sign the waiver, then realize later that you were made false promises and never be able to appeal it because you said it was of your own free will in court.
Guilty until proven innocent.
Terrorist until proven Government employee
think of bail as a security deposit. you normally only need to pay 10% of it to get it. you get the money back if you're find not guilty
you need to pay ALL of your bail to get any back. if you get bail from a bail bond place, the people will pay your whole bail, make you pay 10% of it, then keep all the bail money when it is returned after the trial/court proceedings.
if you only had to pay 10% of your bail to get it back then bail bond places wouldn't be able to profit.
[editline]21st November 2013[/editline]
and you get the money back whether you are guilty or innocent. the bail money is there so that the government doesn't have to pay to keep you incarcerated until trial, but can be reasonably certain that you will show up to court later(since you wanna eventually get that bail money back).
Im going to not read the article and claim that this is because america is racist and that we should kill all cops and have an anarchy thing while we overthrow the state and everyone is anonymous now.
okay?

what are you blathering about
but can be reasonably certain that you will show up to court later(since you wanna eventually get that bail money back).
Courts regularly make the bail unreasonably high. I doubt this is the case alot of the time.
Courts regularly make the bail unreasonably high. I doubt this is the case alot of the time.
They're making a bet that you'll show up for court. Its not unreasonable. It's set high enough that if you ever wanna see your money again that you'll show up. Its an incentive.
Fuck that shit
I wouldn't spend a year at Rikers even if I were to get millions of dollars out of it
of course in addition to everything else people are saying:
At the time of the teen's arrest, Browder's family was unable to pay the $10,000 bail.
THAT ISN'T HOW BAIL IS SUPPOSED TO WORK YOU FUCKING SHIT JUDGE. You choose an amount that they wouldn't want to lose, NOT AN AMOUNT THEY CAN'T AFFORD.
If bail was something everyone could afford easily there would be a lot of people skipping trial. Like I said, its set high so that the people have an investment and a liking to get that money back.
Courts regularly make the bail unreasonably high. I doubt this is the case alot of the time.
that's the point. they set bail to be an obscene amount of money because if you are charged with a serious crime they want to be sure you will show up to court without being incarcerated.

that would take a lot of work to figure out. instead they just set bail in proportion to the charges.

then it will take a lot of work. i'd rather have that than the current bail system that discriminates against poor people.

judges are lazy fucks and don't want to do more work than they have to so you might not wanna hold your breath.
judges are lazy fucks and don't want to do more work than they have to so you might not wanna hold your breath.
yeah i realize that. this is just one small piece in the huge jigsaw puzzle that is "what's wrong with the US justice system."
Oh, well that's okay then. Gosh, here I thought massive natural and civil rights violations were something to be ashamed of and avoided, but as long as the other kids are doing it too...
There's nothing wrong with criticizing, protesting, and attempting to improve the situation, that's the whole point of having free speech and free press, but using the one bad example out of hundred-billions of good ones as grounds to become an anarchist is extremely flawed logic.

Oh no, the justice system might have to do some work and not just put poor people in fucking prison all day. THE HORROR
You get out on bail so that you can organize your defense and because you are innocent until they have proven you guilty.

That sounds like a problem for someone who gives a fuck. Hold property hostage. House arrest. I don't care, but you don't get to keep people in jail for no reason. It isn't okay.
If bail was something everyone could afford easily there would be a lot of people skipping trial. Like I said, its set high so that the people have an investment and a liking to get that money back.
It should be affordable and be an amount of money a person doesn't want to lose.
Lets also not forget about how the system is set up so that people plead guilty instead of actually receiving a proper judgement.

Making up opposing arguments is pretty flawed logic too (no one brought up anarchism besides you and pigeon, who was also strawmanning)
[editline]21st November 2013[/editline]
Also "hundred-billions" lmfao
you are innocent until they have proven you guilty.
not exactly true according to the way our justice system works. you are presumed innocent, but there is "probably cause" that you have committed the crime so they treat you as if you are a threat to the community.
it's weird and contradictory
And it's more than one bad example. Situations like the OP are depressingly common.
Wow.
And I was reading today on the kids who play Knockout, getting 18 months after killing someone with the knockout.

Um, who is suggesting we become anarchists? Did I miss that memo?

Hundreds of billions?
