well the way i see it, most of these anime adaptations are based on animes with all the characters drawn to look like white people
there are very little anime drawn to make the characters look white, it's a misconception that big eyes equals white when they're used to be more expressive, just like western animation does it.
Doing an American live-action version of just about any foreign movie is just about pointless imo. This is probably going to be "that movie where Scarlett Johnasson was a naked
"vampire and walked around sucking off people" "mermaid who traded her tongue for legs and forgot to ask for clothes" You could do a lot with a concept like that, I don't know that this project is right though. I thought Lucy was entertaining but that's because it was so over the top, I don't take her that seriously as an action star. She does well in Marvel movies partly because up to now she's the closest thing to a female superhero in those movies.
Let's see how Hollywood will ruin the infinite potential of this movie. I would like it more if the actress was more like Trinity from Matrix, IMO SJ looks too soft.
Oshii has already cast a live action Motoko. Welp, I knew it was gonna be shit but not that shit, really bad casting call for the female gorilla, next thing is probably gonna be batou being a black dude and pazu being a fat midget.
Hmm, I dont think she has the right face for motoko. She can do an assassin without feelings, but I dont see her pulling off Motoko. Surprise me Ms. Johanson
They need to cast Mickey Rourke as Batou.
is she going to do the dreamworks face
If terry crews is not involved this movie will be bad Terry crews is a hard core ghost in the Shell fan https://twitter.com/terrycrews/status/175420163720622080
I'm more worried that Dreamworks is producing this movie instead of companies like Legendary.
"From the studio that brought you Bee Movie comes a film about gender fluidity in the age of digital identities, the existential outcome of transhumanism, and lots and lots of extrajudicial head explosions!" [editline]5th January 2015[/editline] This is going to go swimmingly.
Eugh. Dreamworks leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
A live action movie in general is a terrible choice. Gits gets away with movies only because it has the anime and other movies in the series to fall back on, as the demographic for the movies will see both. The demographic for a live action Ghost in the shell is unlikely to ever watch the anime or read any of the printed stuff. Given the entire series revolves around the philisophical questions that arise from advanced tech, there just isn't enough time in a movie to really drive that home.

the idea of fucking Hollywood adapting a material like Ghost In The Shell is hilarious. It'll probably end up as shallow as that awful Aeon Flux movie, and it doesn't help that the empty of all charisma Scarlett Johansson will be in it
well the way i see it, most of these anime adaptations are based on animes with all the characters drawn to look like white people
Like what? Dragonball? Oldboy? Akira? Fuckin Speed Racer?? The only time characters are drawn to look like white people in anime is, surprise, when they're white [editline]5th January 2015[/editline] [thumb]http://puu.sh/e7JqR/759b2e3464.png[/thumb] [thumb]http://puu.sh/e7Jv5/4d17376084.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://puu.sh/e7Jw3/7ff7a72786.jpg[/thumb] ... *shrugs* looks white to me lol
[t]http://media.animevice.com/uploads/0/72/7820-motoko_8.jpg[/t] What the hell were they thinking? [t]http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20081030171636/ghostintheshell/en/images/6/6f/Motoko.jpg[/t] She was hotter when they actually covered her up.
I mean, you're basically comparing a glamour shot to a promo poster there.
This probably won't turn out very well.
She was dressed like that in every other episode. She was wearing that in meetings with the chief and politicians.
I can't recall her ever wearing the trenchcoat in the first two seasons, maybe the film these two were the most common outfits really left in meetings, right in combat in free time or in disguise it was the leotard
Did any of you saying she's going to be shit see Under the Skin
is she going to do the dreamworks face
Somebody photoshop the laughing man logo.
Did any of you saying she's going to be shit see Under the Skin
i have no strong feelings one way or the other toward scarlett but her acting ability or w/e doesn't mean much when they're using her to whitewash a japanese property headed by a mediocre director.
The casting people must've been like "An action movie? Starring a female? Someone call Scarlett!" For some reason it never occurs to them that an Asian person should play an Asian character from an Asian series made by an Asian company in Asia. Clearly all the good actors are white, and any other ethnicities are only cast for the sexy "exotic" characters, since they're not cut out to play serious lead roles. She's the industry's current "action lady" since people liked her in The Avengers, so they know putting her name on a movie means automatic big bucks.
If anybody was to play the Major I'd want it to be Emily Blunt. She can pull off that blank cyborg stare that the Major does in the first film.
I don't think the mainstream movie industry is ready for serious, philosophical movies about transhumanisn. People think cyborgs and all they think is stuff like shiny robots that lust for human blood. These people don't wonder about what it means to be human or more than human, just how dangerous those crazy AIs and chrome people are. Action is a nice compliment in near-future science fiction, but concepts are painfully neglected in favor of vapid tits and guns. I know that this live action rendition of GiTs will suffer from what I described. That makes me unsurprised as getting wet in the rain.
but the first movie is pinnacle of the franchise
The first film is unforgettable both as a piece of animation and just as a sci-fi film. The SAC series however is a wonderful addition, with 2nd Gig fleshing out the world and political climate phenomenally.

This is a business first and foremost. The people who say "Yes" to finance a movie are businessmen, not creative types or artists. If you want to get a Ghost in the Shell movie off the ground you first have to convince the business people the movie will make money. One way is obviously who you pick to star. Lucy, not Avengers, established SJ as a legitimate worldwide action movie star. That movie made bucketloads of money around the world and all it really had going for it was her. The kind of true to the source movies most fans want is unlikely to happen simply because no one in the general movie audience wants to see that. The best anyone can hope for is something like The Matrix but with a female lead.
I guess it's not a terribly bad casting choice, but why make a live action version of Ghost in the Shell? That series is essentially a benchmark for what you can pull off through animation, and to make a suitable "real" counterpart to that world you'd pretty much wind up painting everything over in cg anyway.
Because people will watch a 95% animated movie as long as you have actors to make up the last 5%.
Is this the anime where that lmao pic originates from? The one with "you wanna know what it feels like to have sex with an android?" with multiple shots of some guy looking at her ass and then "nah"?

The one with "you wanna know what it feels like to have sex with an android?" with multiple shots of some guy looking at her ass and then "nah"?
Yep, it's from the second season of SAC and it's basically just the Major fucking (not literally) with the kid since he's been a little shit throughout the episode. It's more filler than anything else, but it's still a priceless moment.
Damn political correctness.
