Even if you don't like Star Wars picking The Chipmunks over anything is pretty questionable at best.
The price of the fucking popcorn/drinks was like twice what I payed for the damn tickets. I wanna know how much the theater has made off their damn food.

Why would you ever prefer The Chipmunks over anything in existence? Are you some kind of sadomasochist? I wouldn't prefer The Chipmunks over getting shot.
This comes as a surprise to nobody
Well deserved numbers. I loved the movie it was really great.
But you gotta wonder what the hell people were thinking when they decided to release Alvin and the chipmunks on the same day
Stupid parents showing up on opening weekend not realizing every session is sold out, so instead of disappointing the kids they see the stupid talking Chipmunk movie.
Now look forward to a million more Star Wars movies in the next 10 years
I just saw it a second time - shouted dad the ticket.
It was still emotive even with the knowledge of the plot.
Can't overstate how satisfied I am with it as a film - even my sister enjoyed it and she hasn't seen any of the other Star Wars movies.
if they go away from the jedi and start actually exploring the universe i think it could be a while before it is miked to death. milked, sure, but star wars is a big ol' healthy cow imo
Considering Star Wars Rebels has the main protagonist basically be space aladdin with force sensitivity that's going through his own training and coming of age as the series progresses, I won't be surprised if Disney habitually makes Jedi or force sensitives be prominent main characters in new primary works while leaving the more normal characters to side materials.
Too think some people argued that it wouldn't beat it due to being a winter release and not a summer blockbuster.
Winter releases tend to do better because there's usually less to do than in the summer.

That's big talk coming from the guy who doesn't own it anymore.

I think he meant literally given the height difference.
Went to see it at regal theaters yesterday. The theater place there is literally 3 stories tall with movies on the top floor, foot court on the middle, and general mall entrance on the bottom. There were lines from the top all the way to the bottom and then some. Saw it in one of the RPX or whatever it's called auditoriums (basically like half-imax half-regular. Gigantic curved screen with sound out the ass but no 3d.) Room was huge as well and it was literally filled to the brim to the point where there were staff people searching for seats for people.
It was no surprise after seeing all of those people to see how much money it's made so far (at least for me).
And GTA V beat this 4 times over on its first 3 days, admittedly the cost was more, but its also probably a lesser audience.
Yeah but I'm not paying £50 for a cinema ticket.

As someone who doesn't give a single shit about Star Wars, the day I pick Alvin and the Chipmunks over Star Wars is the day you can have me committed to a mental institution.

now at 517 million. this is fucking insane
I'm really hoping it beats out Avatar as the top grossing film of All Time

It's would be nice to have something decent at the top rather than something that was kinda meh.
parents watch star wars and dump their kids on alvin and the chipmunks. win win.
how is that win win
tbh you'd have to be a bad parent

Called it when I posted the thread regarding Jurassic World breaking that record. Star Wars is gonna set new records for setting new records.
youd have to be the worst if you think having noisy/loud kids at a movie is a good thing unless youre dumping em off at mediocre kid stuff
or control your kids and if they aren't little shitheads they get to totally see a movie that will be a far more memorable experience for them
not all kids are loud you know, I had enough sense to not scream and jump around the theater during a movie as a kid, so could anyones.

The movie was extremely advertised and hyped, its well deserved.
Not only was it overly advertised and overly hyped, it pretty much lived up to the expectations or exceeded them
With the never ending stream of advertisement on every possible platforms and products I would have been surprised if it didn't beat any records.
might surprise you to know that star wars actually only has a 25 million dollar advertising budget which is miniscule in the realm of movies
mad max had ad budget somewhere in the 40~ million range. JW was pretty low comparatively as well at around 32~ million

i took a kid to see star wars who was 11 and he did okay, but honestly i wouldn't have brought anyone younger than that
the 11 year old was tough enough; pretty energetic and talked a lot, had to quiet him down quite a few times

The producer of Jurassic World is married to the producer of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so it's not like it matters.

Rogue one comes out next year with potentially the only force user in it being Vader who won't have much screen time. Then there's also the Han Solo film coming out 2 years after

I love the two passing of the title pictures they've done. Avengers > JW. JW > Star Wars. If Star Wars opened in China this weekend as well, I couldn't see a movie topping it.
I imagine this record will be beaten (JUST) by Avatar 2. A brand which staggers me with how successful it is with one film.
Then that will inevitably be smashed by Episode 9 and the massive hype that will come with the final Star Wars episode.

To be beaten by Avatar 3, to be beaten by Episode 9, to be beaten by Avatar 4, to be beaten by Episode 10
Really not looking forward to Collin Treverrow doing IX :(
I went on Monday to a shitty small theater and the show was almost bought out. It's insane how many people are going to see it.
