At least we apologized. I don't believe Japan has apologized for anything in that war.
Hey now, let's not get ahead of ourselves: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_war_apology_statements_issued_by_Japan

I never heard of these.
My only question now is, why didn't they apologize for everything at once instead of doing it over the decades (and continuing, apparently)?

Idk, why do we?
So, just like how we treated every other Amerindian group?
Well, unlike the others we didn't completely wipe them out. Instead we took a page from Spain and England's book and used them as the cheapest cheap labor available... Still, they actually had a recognized country that wasn't INSTANTLY snatched up the moment the first Europeans spotted it. That's different from being a slowly moving westward unstoppable wave of doom against a nomadic people.

We keep deciding that new things need to be apologized for?
Idk, why do we?
Well we only had one thing really to apologize for to those Japanese, and while it was late, we still did get to it some 40 years later. Other than maybe the civilian bombings (which all nations participated in), I don't think the US has much to say sorry for while Japan has a great deal. If they're going to apologize, why not apologize for it all right away instead of through the decades up unto the 2010s?

To piss off the Chinese.
They are still fighting over territories in the pacific so... yeah. It's still not really over between them.

Dude, read up war crimes committed by the Allies during WWII, there's some seriously disturbing shit no one ever apologized for.

"Winners write the history" i.e. Winners don't "have to" apologize, as stupid as that sounds. I doubt anyone really expects the US to apologize for things in WWII, especially since we were "victims dragged into it".

It would be really difficult to apologize for each and every thing that was done during the war. I guess the thing that is done is to quietly forget about it, and pretend that your side did nothing wrong.

"I can't say sorry, it's too hard" is a pitiful excuse.

From a morale standpoint that's terribly wrong. If you're expecting Japan to suddenly apologize for everything because it's the right thing to do, you should expect the winners to do so.

Never said it was right, just saying how it is today.

Surprising considering all it took was an extremely cursory glance through a Wikipedia search.

Indeed it is, but that's quite different compared to "they never apologized for anything, those shmucks".

I've never had much interest in history after 1918, to be honest. I'm sure there's people out there who know more about WWII through video games than I do through what few books I've read on the war.
trail of tears
japanese internment camps
red scare
I'd post events like these from other countries too, but my history is not strong enough for that.
Could someone finish this list?
Wounded Knee Massacre, My Lai Massacre, Abu Ghraib, and the 7/12/07 Baghdad airstrikes to name a few.

How would you go about getting each and every single crime down to apologize for individually then?
Not really the brightest part of America's history, but I can understand why it was done.
"a country attacked us, lets put EVERYONE of japanese heritage in concentration camps"

read following comments
Here in Canada we did this as well, I have not looked up what the Americans did, but we took property, land, houses. A lot of the stuff we took ended being sold in auctions even in instances where we promised to give the stuff back, David Suzuki's family was effected by it.
We didn't end up compensating the Japanese Canadians that were effected until I think the 80s or 90s.

But see none of that matters because the US is the only evil in the modern world, therefore the only one in the past. Besides the nazis.
:I
But for real, I didn't know that Canada did that shit too, I wouldn't have thought them diverse enough at the time to even think to do it.
Canada does have some dark history like any other country. (Look up the Somalia Affair, happened in the 90s)

At least they say sorry
ITT: Humanity is fucked up.
It doesn't excuse the fact that it happened, but for the most part the people interned did not suffer nearly as much as those put in other concentration camps. Then again, America was seriously racist back then.

We cocked up countless times in South America and the Middle East

60 years after the fact :P

Maybe I should comment on the actual news article.
These things happen. Stuff like this interests me (not what they did, but first hand accounts). I love history.
Its a sad period.

This is history too. Bad shit is still happening all over the world.
I wonder if we'll ever outgrow this kind of nonsense fueled by racism/nationalism/religion/whatever and get on with space colonization so we can be speciesist against those damn cheating Martians!
We should set up an apology line of credit.
The President would sign 50,000 apologies which are left blank and will be cosigned by the Red Cross whenever a certain activist group representing a once-abused minority will request an apology.

That's much easier than not doing something to apologize for in the first place! You should be a top political adviser with ideas like that.

History is written by the victor is the quote you're looking for.

Civilian bombings are nothing to apologize for.
