Baseless speculation, if it was a drastic change people would have noticed it by now [editline]19th September 2015[/editline] No, the US uses at least 15% ethanol and a lot of the brands like speedway, Sam's, Murphy ect, are gas wholesalers who use blended fuels instead of the name brand vendors who use their own individual blend, its a lot cheaper from wholesalers but the gas mileage is noticeably lower
Not all fuel has ethanol in it. I run regular 87 without ethanol for example. And wholesalers don't mean that we use lesser quality fuel in general. Just that you can buy lesser quality. Name brand stuff still exists and easy to get.
It WILL reduce MPG, and that's a fact. People with F-250 Powerstrokes are removing their emissions systems and GAINING 5-10 mpg. It's no secret that the EPA's regulations is one of the big reasons our diesel engines here aren't getting great gas mileage. We've reached a point a few years ago where regulations started hurting fuel efficiency, but nobody batted an eyelash.
Because obviously more regulation is always a good thing when we're talking about passenger vehicles, which are clearly what's responsible for most of the pollution out there and the reason fluffy little polar bears up north are running out of ice! R-Right guys?
Gotta be shitting me.. I was thinking about getting a second hand diesal Golf/Polo. Might go back to the drawing board.
Is there any reason why VW made it so that the "emission control" thing shouldn't be on at all times? What gives?
It leans out the air/fuel mixture, which can be damaging if driven normally (increased exhaust temperatures, knocking)
The device is programmed to detect when the car is undergoing official emissions testing. Only during such tests are the cars’ full emissions control systems turned on. During normal driving situations, the controls are turned off, allowing the cars to spew as much as 40 times as much pollution as the legal standard required under the Clean Air Act, the E.P.A. said.
So basically a VW diesel car is rollin' coal. Got it.
Gotta be shitting me.. I was thinking about getting a second hand diesal Golf/Polo. Might go back to the drawing board.
You live in Australia.
You live in Australia.
Yeah, it's the US statutes and regulations that were breached.. lord knows how much worse it is for us.
Damn, I always liked the idea of the TDIs and have even been pondering getting one down the line, after however many years it takes my Mk4 Golf to earn retirement. Still, where there's smoke there's fire (no pun intended) - as others said, I'd be surprised if other makers weren't doing similar to identical things with their cars too. Probably just stupid optimism but if anything I hope this encourages a crackdown on this sort of practice across the auto industry, hopefully cleaning it up (literally) in the process and making "clean" diesels like what the TDIs are supposed to be a reality.
the only reason why industrial vehicles are exempt from epa requirements is because of massive lobbying efforts from their manufacturers, theres a reason why the republicans are being funded partly to gut vehicle emission standards this election cycle, because obama implimented epa laws that finally affect industrial vehicles
I always wondered how the hell big dump trucks and the like could get away with spewing giant clouds of black shit everywhere. Guess I shouldn't really be surprised at the answer.

I'm really glad that I went with a 1.0l Ford EcoBoost instead of a VW TDI in my goal for HWY MPG in a new vehicle...
[Americans] just don't use diesels because the fuel has been reliably 2x as expensive as gas […]
Around here it's quite commonly hand in hand with standard to mid octane unleaded. Non-ethanol, on the other hand, is far more expensive. It really depends upon your region due to numerous variables.
Yeah, it's the US statutes and regulations that were breached.. lord knows how much worse it is for us.
Nope, not sure what you're getting at here. How does something isolated to the US stop you from buying a Volkswagon here in Australia?
You guys are seriously overdoing it with that VW hate, especially you not-american people, are you just looking for a reason to hate on something or what :v: [sp]vw is one of the best car makes[/sp]
Once Hitler's brand, always Hitler's brand. Not wanting a GTI anymore, a shame really, it looked promising.
it wont even affect a GTI, this is the diesels. GTI is a petrol.
Gotta be shitting me.. I was thinking about getting a second hand diesal Golf/Polo. Might go back to the drawing board.
Please read the thread
I always wondered how the hell big dump trucks and the like could get away with spewing giant clouds of black shit everywhere. Guess I shouldn't really be surprised at the answer.
They're subject to a much less stringent regulation set. Also, black soot is a natural byproduct every diesel engine produces when you work it to within an inch of its life. There exist devices that are analagous to the catalytic converter in gasoline fuelled vehicles which clean this soot out of the system, but it is present in every single diesel engine ever built when that diesel is worked hard. It stems from how diesel engines govern themselves. Gasoline engines govern themselves by restricting airflow and maintaining a set fuel mixture based on the airflow going through the engines. Diesel engines do NOT restrict the airflow, instead they govern their speed by varying the fuel mixture. The richer you run a diesel the more power it produces, and vice versa. Rich fuel mixtures produce sooty exhaust, and since rich fuel mixtures are how diesel engines are throttled 'up', all diesels produce soot at heavy load. Gas engines will do it too, but if a gasoline fuelled engine produces a cloud of soot there is something dreadfully wrong with the fuel system. They're not supposed to produce any soot, even at max load and max throttle.
I'm pretty sure Euro and US fuel is mostly the same. We just have different octane rating systems.
No, US gasoline is much lower octane than EU gas is. The additive packages are also much different. A US engine will run quite happily on EU gas, but an EU engine will balk and moan and cry and complain and throw a CEL if you shove US 87 down its throat.

How big is the natural gas cars industry in USA? It's really blooming here in Sweden. We've even started getting some hydrogen fuelled cars
Hitler's plan all along.
VW constantly scored really low in reliability
VWs have never been reliable. Once they hit 100k, literally everything breaks.
VWs have never been reliable. Once they hit 100k, literally everything breaks.
My first car was a 97' Jetta GT, and it was my dads he had bought new. We got rid of it at 400k miles, never had a major problem. It was a 5 speed with the 2.0L, it was an amazing car. In all that time, had only needed the clutch replaced and a new radiator and coolant pump. The thing was it was all manual, no power anything and that's what knocked out a lot of VW's from that era which was shoddy electronics. I loved that car, and the interior rocked, very well designed. I just last week test drove a 2012 TDI and I loved the engine and torque but hated the interior. They really have went downhill, very uninspired and cheap materials were used, and the readability of all new VW's is awful, most notably with the 2009+ models. My girlfriend had her heart set on a Jetta but after a month of research and test driving has changed to a Subaru Forester. It's a shame, they are nicely designed cars on the outside.

Apparently the newer model GTI's are pretty much guaranteed to have a water pump replacement at like 30k miles, along with a slew of other VW-standard reliability issues. I talked to a friend of a friend who bought a 2012 cherry-red GTI brand new and he told me to stay far far away because of numerous repairs he had to make at very early mileages. VW makes good sporty cars that are competitively priced but you're going to pay back that difference in repairs and maintenance along the way it seems.
VWs have never been reliable. Once they hit 100k, literally everything breaks.
We've got a '79 Kombi. Been fairly reliable except for the engine spontaneously combusting one day. :v: [editline]19th September 2015[/editline]
I was in love with the GTI for years, but when it came time to buy one I just got the Hyundai Veloster instead. Granted it's only 2 years old, but I haven't had a single problem with it that was on the car's fault. The front struts got a bit damaged from the absurd amount of potholes in this city, and had them replaced for free and was in and out in half an hour.

We don't use salt here in Cleveland, too expensive.
Pretty sure ours is actually about 4 octane (RON) lower than euro standards, but that isnt really that huge of a difference.
no, the calculation is different, you cannot compare the numbers without taking the calculation into consideration
Hahahaha, Volvo wins again!
Hahahaha, Volvo wins again!
Except they still won't release ep3

No thanks [editline]20th September 2015[/editline]
VWs have never been reliable. Once they hit 100k, literally everything breaks.
The motor blew on my 02 passat at 59,900 miles.. [editline]20th September 2015[/editline] 100k is being generous. I keep hearing that after 5 years they start to fall apart. Someone I know with a 2010 VW CC can confirm. :v: And everytime I hear one of those older (~'02) passats, they sound like absolute shit. Like go-karts. puttputtputputt
