How many times have you heard of that sort of stuff happening in the way larger, far more active Star-Trek and Star-Wars fandoms?
Actually I'd argue furries have probably the largest convention scene out of any fandom. There are literally hundreds that take place worldwide and the top ones always have thousands who go to them.
Don't forget the creation of countless troll alts to try and "prove a point"
uh, no?
creating alts to try prove your point is dumb as fuck

That's why I put it in sarcasm quotes.
Knowing the dog show community more than I want to, I'd love to see a video of their reactions when all of these furries come flooding into their space. They're quite often vain, passive-aggressive, and highly judgmental people who make this shit their life, so a bunch of "freaks" ruining their event dressed as dogs and stuff would have been fucking great. Like I imagine all these fat Midwestern people with wolf/nature-themed shirts and knit sweaters clutching their immaculately groomed dogs while they and their dogs have this look of abject horror. Speechless, they watch this horde of fake fur and fetish gear spill out from a side door, the smell of sweat and sex wafting from one particular section of the crowd who's fursuits are just a little bit off-color.
This doesn't have to be sad you guys! We can have fun with it, don't let the terrorists win.
I think i've managed to hit that balance.
The furry fandom has helped me through some really rough times a few years ago, and thanks to it i have gained a boyfriend, i've met fantastic friends, i've improved my social skills, which for someone with autism is hard as fuck. And best of all i've learnt to accept who i am, and my confidence has risen from basically not existing.
Heck its because of the community i even dare to write anything on facepunch, or any other place these days.
I would literally not have friends and probably wouldn't have graduated highschool without furry stuff. At this point it's just a minor facet of my life, but several years ago it REALLY helped me cope with a lot of stuff.

So did SA, albeit for entirely different reasons.

Lol, source please.

It was pretty funny that they went from their furry convention area to a dog show convention down the road literally a short walk away. The dogs did get very distressed, watched some video from a live stream on YouTube and heard dogs howling in distress. It happens when thousands of people flood the area.
Apparently ISIS is claiming responsibility.
Ok, I really hope they actually are making that claim and you aren't just bullshitting. That would be the one funny thing in this incident is that a terrifyingly evil organization it desperate enough that it has to claim responsibility for something like this.
JFC we're fighting over some fandom when people could very well have died (thankfully no official reports of this). Grow up, set aside your differences for a day or two folks, as much as you and I may hate the fandom.
I'm friends with someone who is friends with one of the first furries to be taken to hospital for exposure -- the one who tweeted that their lungs were "burning". My friend was beside himself all night long, worried that one of his friends may have been permanently harmed by some fuckwad who decided to throw chlorine gas into a hotel full of furries.
If you think this is funny because furries suck, you're worse than the actual zoophiles that insist on being a part of furry while they fuck dogs.
It never ceases to amaze me how when it comes to stuff like this there are only two sides it seems:
This who LOATHE furries and those who don't give a shit. It is a constant source if amusement at least

P. Sure even the zoophiles are comparatively redeemable.
"We need to get you an IV immediately"
*takes out trauma shears*
"DO NOT CUT MY FUR OTHERKIN"

Out of curiosity, apart from the Chicago Tribune did any other sources say that it was intentional? I was hearing that it was a leak of a chlorine-based coolant (that was banned a few years ago by the EPA) before the intentional rumor started to spread - probably because it makes for a better story than just a safety violation. In any case, from what I heard from some friends at the con the evacuation and emergency response was all very quick, professional and calm. Medics seemed to have affected people taken care of right away so hopefully everyone will be a-ok.
It really warms my heart seeing the sympathetic attitude from (almost) everyone here - even if we're far from the most popular group around, it's nice to know that when the poop hits the paddles people care about what's important.
Also probably worth mentioning that the Embassy hotel was (reportedly) outright turning away evacuees from the gassed one if they didn't have a room there.

Both interesting and terrifying how such a relatively big amount of people seem to think that this was somehow justified, either because "but they're "weird" and I think they're gross", or because "they're all zoophiles/pedophiles/Hitler".
The first reason is extremely fucking stupid and sociopathic, you want to see people hurt/killed simply because they happen to like/get aroused by something that is otherwise 100% harmless, but you happen to dislike it. Congratulations, you have an actual problem, not them.
Should also be noted that this kind of logic is shared by most homophobes, who are homophobic because of non-religious reasons. "But they're strange and I think the idea of two men/women kissing is puke-worthy, imprison them already!"
The second reason is almost just as dumb, it's one of the biggest and most widespread fandoms on the web, of course it's going to have those kinds of people in it, and of course they should be forced to receive mental rehabilitation seeing as they're actually harmful to society, just as some sociopathic moron trying to injure people with toxic compounds is.
Using your logic, I guess we should arrest and/or execute anyone into BDSM. After all, they're just a bunch of power-fantasy bondage rapist pedophile freaks, just like Fritzel! And have you seen the porn they make? Fucking gross, man, no wonder people hate them, they really have it coming to them
And what about people in the U.S who are for gun rights? "Self-Defense" is just something they've made up to try and justify themselves, isn't it pretty obvious that they're a bunch of murderers who just want easy access to the tools they need to senselessly kill people? And even if they're not, how can you even like weapons in the first place? Bunch of disgusting creeps dude
Thing is, I used to be pretty much like you, and even if my retarded hateboner didn't reach as far as wanting to see people get physically hurt, I absolutely hated furries and everything about them, their "strangeness", them spending tons of money on stuff I found stupid and ridiculous, and their disgusting porn, and the people who didn't have the common sense to not shove it into people's faces, sending links to people saying "look at this funny picture", or spamming completely unrelated forums with it because "become one of us :3333333333333333333333333333333", and of course I generalized them to all be the same
The last thing is something I experienced when I was a regular on a Swedish technology forum ~backintheday~, which is also when I was first exposed to the fandom, and caused me to hate it
I later joined Facepunch, and as soon as I discovered the furry forum, I began harassing and trolling people left and right, and about five years ago I got permabanned for causing the YouTube profile of a furry to get raided by FP members
Seeing as this is the person I was in my early-mid teens, I'd say I'm excused. I cringe quite badly when I think back on how stupid I used to be
... b-but dogfuckers?
Furries exist because of sexual frustration.
Furries exist because of sexual frustration.
"hey look this person is a furry clearly they don't have sex ever because all furrys have fetishes of that sort right? Its impossible someone would just like furry stuff"
Furries exist because of sexual frustration.
That makes no sense. Being a furry CAUSES sexual frustration.
I just found out one of my in real life furry friends (who was also a coworker of mine) was there when it happened, she said she got a headache once the smell hit the lobby. Apparently it wasn't too bad, but that's still sickening if someone did that intentionally. How can you justify killing any human being unless they're a bloodthirsty psychopath who will kill anyone that gets in their way?

That's a very one-sided approach, you are only looking at a portion of some people from this fandom, while there are more reasons as to why people get soaked in than just for looking at porn.

I think some people also forget that there are many people in the hotel and surrounding areas that are not related to the convention or fandom at all.

I knew a furry who did very well, I think he was trying to trick me into some sort of sex but I stood my ground.
