So the CEO of Reddit admitted to editing negative comments about him

[del]Moderators of subreddits have the ability to edit posts. Moderators usually edit posts because it's a good post but it has sensitive or bannable information.[/del]
This is wrong. I might be mistaking Moderators with Admins.
Afaik on FP it'll say who edited it last though.
Someone edited Starpluck's RC post and it doesn't say someone edited it.
Moderators of subreddits have the ability to edit posts. Moderators usually edit posts because it's a good post but it has sensitive or bannable information.
No, they don't.
The issue isn't really their ability to use it as much as it is their ability to use it without the edited notice appearing, as well as the inappropriate manner in which they used it.
In addition, Reddit admins unbanned/unmuted several shit-stirrers from the subreddit as well, if I recall correctly. Honestly, if this happened anywhere other than a subreddit that the majority of the community dislikes such as The_Donald, I'm sure calls for Spez's resignation would be all over the website.

No they don't.

source: I own a subreddit.
Regardless of how fucking annoying The_Donald is, this is a horrible breach of ethics for a website that wants to be the "front page of the internet." This is a huge problem.
What a bunch of babies
it's like it's their first time being exposed to internet shenanigans
No, they don't.
Whoops. I could've sworn I saw a Q&A or something where a moderator edited out someone's post.
What can't moderators do?
Moderators are unable to
move posts or threads
edit other users' submissions or comments
read other users' private messages.
see the IP address or any other details about a redditor that aren't visible to everyone else, except for comments and submissions removed in their subreddit
make threads or comments lead to a "not found" page
change the subreddit capitalization (casing) chosen when the subreddit was initially created without CSS tricks
remove any voting arrows without CSS
remove, delete or ban any subreddit, including their own
know who subscribed to their subreddit
know who voted on things in their subreddit
know who reported things in their subreddit. Report button abuse should be dealt with by the admins by messaging the mods of /r/reddit.com
cant wait for reddit to die off
It's only a matter of time before a moderator comes in here and adds something stupid to the end of everyone's post.
Whoops. I could've sworn I saw a Q&A or something where a moderator edited out someone's post.
I'm guessing what you observed before was a mod removing a submission and instructing the OP to edit something in/out to get the post reapproved.

it makes me wonder if this isn't fhe first time something like this has happened

Well, the editing thing including shadow editing is literally your OP. Here is a quote of spez talking about quarantining "racist hate subs", its a stretch on my part to translate that to "anyont we disagree with" but considering how its been enforced on the donald and r/european i think its a fair one. Implementing a quarantine system at all is shitty.
The vote manipulation is harder to prove but i believe there's enough evidence at this point that im comfortable saying its very likely. Here is a post explaining the evidence for negative vote manipulation and vote decay. There were a few like this, but there ended up being a lot of highly downvoted clinton posts (50% upvotes) that maintained scores and front page positions that aren't possible without some kind of manipulation. Example.
It isn't a video of spez laughing evilly as he stomps on a pile of puppies but, as someone somewhere once said, the appearance of impropriety is the same as impropriety itself. They are at the point where its up to them to prove they aren't fucking around, and then we get them editing user comments secretly. It makes no sense to trust them at this point, the best outcome is that people decide the reddit admins really are being dickheads and put real pressure on them, forcing them to be more transparent. Or, they just never become transparent and we know one of the biggest sites on the internet is fucked.
It's been speculated for a while now that T_D has been manipulating the vote system. T_D posts regularly make it to the front page with 50-60% upvotes anyway.
it's like there's always somebody in every thing doing shady shit
I have no idea how the_donald is even a thing.
Everything about it from the content to the interface looks like it's used by and made by literal children.

i dont quite understand that one post explaining the votes on the donald trump AMA
why does it have to be admins
bot accounts are fucking rampant on reddit and used often for vote manipulation i dont see how it HAS to be the admins
that and if they really wanted to get rid of the AMA/hide it from the top of all they could have prevented it from being there at all?
that and the hillary post has 6k upvotes, that usually leads to the front page

They've held the Rising tab of r/All in their grip for the past year or so, so that doesn't surprise me.
Oh No That Is Highly Unethical And I Must Be In A George Orwell Novel Woe Is Me
You joke, but this is exactly the sort of thing that Orwell feared.
Orwell, outside of literature, was leery of Socialism and Liberalism that sought to gain power and influence over any aspect of a person's "private" life, even if it was demonstrably in the name of the greater good. Things like the Ministry of Truth in his novel, 1984, mirrored the (to him) horrific reality of history as written with an ideological slant in mind.
In the same vein, as we grow more and more reliant on social media of every sort, the way the record of that media reflects the true beliefs of it's users becomes a more and more important question.
If people cannot be safe in the belief that text written yesterday, or last week, or last year, or further back will remain the same the next day as it was on the day of it's creation, that undermines the creation of that text at all. If it is demonstrated that put under pressure the powers that be can alter the historical record (and yes, it is a record that exists for longer than just the present, which is what the record of history is) without any evidence of that alteration, then the question arises, when will they next do it? For what reason will they next use this power? Why would they hold back on issues they really "care" about when something as simple as a few bad days is enough to drive them to deploy this power? Couldn't they make us say anything they want us to? Couldn't they use that against us?
That is literally what the protagonist of 1984 did at his job.
We cannot condone it under any circumstances. We cannot simply say, "well they are the deplorables, so it's okay to persecute them." We cannot say, "well it was just a joke, so let's move on," because that 'joke' exposes a power capable of tremendous abuse.
If this was any other subreddit, any other community, if this was /r/hillaryclinton or /r/bernie, there would be outrage on such a scale that I guarantee you it would be on some major media network's morning show tomorrow. But it's an easy target. It's a free sleight. It will be easy for a lot of people to say, "oh, that's not my problem, and it hurt people I didn't like. Why should I worry?"
That is flatly hypocritical and shortsighted, at the least.
Well, the editing thing including shadow editing is literally your OP.
I was more concerned about this part
"Usually the CEO wouldnt know how to override posts in the database, spez probably does but if he did it so casually i doubt he went through that effort."
Like what exactly are you implying here?
Here is a quote of spez talking about quarantining "racist hate subs", its a stretch on my part to translate that to "anyont we disagree with" but considering how its been enforced on the donald and r/european i think its a fair one. As far as I know, r/the_donald isn't quarantined. Only blatantly racist hate subs are.

And there are a lot of r/the_donald posts that have 50% upvotes and are the on front page. The reason why? It's called mass downvoting stuff on r/all.
Anti-Clinton downvote all Pro-trump stuff
Anti-Trump downvote all Pro-Clinton stuff
Stricter rules were applied to the Trump subreddit, and not because it was a Trump subreddit, but because people were tired of seeing half of r/all being from r/the_donald. Seriously, if you looked at r/trending on a slow news today, 90% of it was the_donald because they have the mentality of UPVOTE ANYTHING, seriously ask an r/the_Donald user and they will tell you that.

It makes sense not to trust them, but to insinuate baseless conspiracy theories about them is really terrible and it devalues legitimate criticism for when they do fuck up.
They've held the Rising tab of r/All in their grip for the past year or so, so that doesn't surprise me.
they even had a script that they made to automatically upvote all T_D posts, big T_D users and downvote "shills"
https://www.reddit.com/r/EnoughTrumpSpam/comments/4ze7gm/massive_botnet_from_the_altright_racists_using/
it moved slowly enough down the screen it could probably avoid the bot detection of just auto-upvoting everything immediately, imitating a real user

i think this stuff is pretty convincing
the amount of imgur views on content, subscribers compared to bigger subs and comparing those to the average upvote count is very obvious that either T_D users are active almost all the time, or theres some botting happening

I wish image macros weren't banned, because you've got to be trolling.
If you're not, I'm going to sum this up with the quick and pithy, "Democratic Socialism is not Socialism, Democratic, or Liberal."
Unless you would like to tell me that a certain German group of Democratic Socialists were the bastions of Socialist theory and the democratic spirit.
I thought it was already known that reddit admins mess with stuff.

Yes, you probably accepted some T&C that allows them too
