So the CEO of Reddit admitted to editing negative comments about him

I guess character assassination is a lot easier and more legal than I thought, then.
yes
you think that's ethically acceptable?
I guess character assassination is a lot easier and more legal than I thought, then.
That's the issue here (and with half the internet, really). The question is which site you trust enough to not care about you (and whether someone who might care has access).
That said, if it actually does amount to defamatory editing, it is probably illegal in e.g. Germany since it should amount to making a statement about the user in question.

[sp]it fake, i'm silly, sorry mates. Still funny[/sp]
Radical Reddit admins.
Wow. That's a new one. Please Lord Trump, save us from the radical Reddit terrorists and their downvote bombs.

Never believe screenshots.
The only exception is if the source is not publicly available and enough people who have access confirm it independently.

that's the beautiful thing about the internet, if you don't like the way a site is run you can go somewhere else or start your own community
You joke, but this is exactly the sort of thing that Orwell feared.
Orwell, outside of literature, was leery of Socialism and Liberalism that sought to gain power and influence over any aspect of a person's "private" life, even if it was demonstrably in the name of the greater good. Things like the Ministry of Truth in his novel, 1984, mirrored the (to him) horrific reality of history as written with an ideological slant in mind.
In the same vein, as we grow more and more reliant on social media of every sort, the way the record of that media reflects the true beliefs of it's users becomes a more and more important question.
If people cannot be safe in the belief that text written yesterday, or last week, or last year, or further back will remain the same the next day as it was on the day of it's creation, that undermines the creation of that text at all. If it is demonstrated that put under pressure the powers that be can alter the historical record (and yes, it is a record that exists for longer than just the present, which is what the record of history is) without any evidence of that alteration, then the question arises, when will they next do it? For what reason will they next use this power? Why would they hold back on issues they really "care" about when something as simple as a few bad days is enough to drive them to deploy this power? Couldn't they make us say anything they want us to? Couldn't they use that against us?
That is literally what the protagonist of 1984 did at his job.
We cannot condone it under any circumstances. We cannot simply say, "well they are the deplorables, so it's okay to persecute them." We cannot say, "well it was just a joke, so let's move on," because that 'joke' exposes a power capable of tremendous abuse.
If this was any other subreddit, any other community, if this was /r/hillaryclinton or /r/bernie, there would be outrage on such a scale that I guarantee you it would be on some major media network's morning show tomorrow. But it's an easy target. It's a free sleight. It will be easy for a lot of people to say, "oh, that's not my problem, and it hurt people I didn't like. Why should I worry?"
That is flatly hypocritical and shortsighted, at the least.
admin edits posts that say "fuck u/spez"
this is truly a slippery slope
What would really happen if the admins just shut down T_D? The users of it and all the other conspiracy subreddits would complain and threaten and blackmail and then move back to 4chan?
What a shame

Way to miss his point.
Censorship on a private website is one thing, but actively changing a user's words is another. Sadly, people can get lied too, persecuted, or straight up fired for what they post on Reddit and thus changing a user's content is a potential royal fuck up.
We don't even have any idea what other unconfirmed cases has happened with this.
It is easily a slippery slope.

You would just validate every single one of them and martyr their movement to come back even more resolved.
If you some of yall can't see why this kind of doubling down is actually counter-active, I hope you enjoy a second term of Trump.

Its a forum. The internets a big place. They can go somewhere else.
And before you say Reddits all about free speech, how is the donald allowed to ban every dissenting opinion making the whole place an echo chamber. A safe space like those they criticize. Youre not allowed to argue or reason with them.
that's the beautiful thing about the internet, if you don't like the way a site is run you can go somewhere else or start your own community
If I find out I don't like how a site is run because of an admin impersonating me on it, it's a bit too late to go somewhere else. I may have had my reputation ruined or my job lost.
Way to miss his point.

You would have a point if it was more severe and less obvious than changing "Fuck /u/spez" to "Fuck r/the_Donald moderators"
You would have a point if it was more severe and less obvious than changing "Fuck /u/spez" to "Fuck r/the_Donald moderators"
Again, the only confirmed cases.
The principle of it is still a huge blunder, and will only now strengthen the_Donald crowd further with validation.
Ignore it as petty all you want, but this is a huge victory for the group you probably can't stand.
And either way if the guy is so fucking petty to change user's posts over that, then I am quite concerned what happens when he or other admins are quite rustled.
the question is no longer "are reddit admins manipulating the site" it's now "how can they manipulate the site"
do they have auto-gradual downvoters to downvote posts they dont want seen? have they been editing comments like this already sucessfully and finally just got caught?
reddit killed any credibility it had tonight involving this shit
the question is no longer "are reddit admins manipulating the site" it's now "how can they manipulate the site"
And also a resounding "have they done this before?"

You're more outraged by consumers using their right to refund video games (a practice you called scummy) than by an admin that can essentially impersonate political opponents with no way for anybody to notice. Remember all the celebrity and political AMAs? The trump AMA? The Obama AMA? How do we know none of those had any edited posts?

Hahahaha wow, 2016 really is the year of satire becoming reality, eh?
You guys take reddit a little too seriously.

Looks like you ran out of actual points.
[editline]24th November 2016[/editline]
Also take this with an extreme grain of salt, but apparently the admin chat was screen-capped and is now floating around reddit of them talking about the incident.

Just because I called something scummy doesn't mean it outrages me lmao
I always found the fact that celebrities and politicians posted on reddit to be laughable anyway. There are far more trustworthy public mediums.
You guys take reddit a little too seriously.
It's an extremely influential website, what is there not to take seriously?

I guess I'm just saying it's hilarious that you people respected Reddit in any sort of official capacity to begin with.

Psh, I think reddit is a joke in most major sub-forums.
But you failing to see how this is a bigger deal for the growth of The_Donald is a bigger joke.
It's an extremely influential website, what is there not to take seriously?
It's influential to maybe less than roughly 3% of the population worldwide. 234 million unique users. I'm a user and don't see Reddit as anything more than a center for memes or television discussion, and I doubt I'm all that unique.

Way to totally ignore the context of internet access/visitors.
That and it is the 27th most visited website in the world and 8th in America. According to alexa.com
And people use it as their main source of news intake in alot of cases.

Oh I see, you're trying to sell the "we memed donald trump into presidency" narrative.
You'll have to excuse me if I think a donald trump subreddit believing they're important is cute af.
Should have just muted the subreddit and banned it from /all. Everyone would be happy then.

Are you seriously unaware of how this confirmation for editing user's posts legitimizes the concerns of The_Donald?
I know you are trying to now just to side step/fill my mouth with words (fucking meme DJT to president seriously?), but of all the points I make, you should realize that this is a blunder that will only strengthen the side you hate.
