So the CEO of Reddit admitted to editing negative comments about him

Im glad this is happening because hopefully it destroys reddit and all the credibility it has
Fuck reddit tbh
to me the /r/pizzagate thing isnt the problem
the problem is that the reddit owners actively admitted they have the power to edit posts to whatever they want without a trace. this reaction isn't overblown to that.
this singlehandedly destroys any credibility of any reddit postings, because what if the reddit admins want to play dirty and trash someones rep by posting as them? or hide info they dont want coming out?
we only know they can edit posts too, who knows what else the admins have as tools.
it's no surprise that the owners of a website can edit any part of it in any way they please.

Jesus Christ lol
You thought admins on forums couldn't change posts without trace? xD
Showing/not showing edits is a standard forum option on setting up user classes.

This however adds more fuel to /r/the_donald's baseless paranoia.
All the nutjobs that think that spez editing some posts, then admitting, apologising, and fixing them, legitimises the life-threateningly dangerous tin-foil hat nonsense that is r/pizzagate, as well as the constant flow of misinformation and fearmongering that is r/the_donald are grabbing at straws invisible to the naked eye.
If this stays heated for a while, which it might, spez should step down for PR reasons, but as it stands, it's such an overreaction to something so unbelievably minor. Imagine if these people were as outraged at the leagues of corruption the companies and government agencies they deal with as much as spez editing some posts.
People are indeed overreacting, but I don't think this is a minor thing at all. pizzagate mods say they got 1 warning. After that, people they banned for posting personal information were mysteriously unbanned and unmuted, and then their sub was subsequently banned because those users continued posting personal information, which I find pretty suspicious.

Then there's also the fact that the post he made his edits in was in the washington post. The whole thing reeks.

you could, you know, just not go to the_donald
or any other subreddit/website you dislike, it's not hard
Feeling legitimized and being legitimized are not the same thing.
Which is a completely subjective difference. No shit an opponent isnt going to think it's legitimized for real.
Alt-right breeds fear. They control fear. They use that fear to recruit others for their cause. Why do you think that subreddits like r/conspiracy and r/theredpill are socially right wing?
Funny because thats what everyone has been saying about the left for years
Funny because thats what everyone has been saying about the left for years
how is perpetuating conspiracies and race-baiting on the same level as what the left does
Okay, I left that a little open. From what I see, the worst out of the left is the shit some of them say about white people, and I still find that astoundingly rare, and serious "i genuinely believe we should put white people in camps" sentiment is rarer still. It should be shouted down yes, but it's not anywhere near as bad as shit like pizzagate and Breitbart's regular articles calling young minorities ticking timebombs.

I do that already thank you very much. The problem is that the_cheeto plays a big part in spreading racist and sexist viewpoints on reddit, especially thanks to their posts being very often upvoted to the main page of reddit. The uproar over the post-editing can be used by the_donald to sway more people towards them. And believe me, they will.
Funny because thats what everyone has been saying about the left for years
....No they haven't.
I'll remind you that right-wing paranoia has, since the turn of the millennium, flung the US into two pointless, expensive wars that have accomplished nothing but destabilise the region.

it doesn't sound like you do
Funny because thats what everyone has been saying about the left for years
I won't say that it's 100% justified how a lot of liberal leaning people treat rural people like spooky aliens, but I don't think it's pure fearmongering as much as it is "the policies you support scare us because we find them inhumane, and we can't understand them."
Spez doesn't just own it. He made it.
Okay? I figured as much, but it's not really relevant to my point. I was generalizing.

What do you mean unbelievably minor? There should be laws against this...

or you could just stop viewing message boards as official or political entities
[sp]ack, shouldn've edited previous post instead of hitting reply[/sp]

Who? Who has been saying this?
or you could just stop viewing message boards as official or political entities
Yea that ship has sailed, sorry.
If people can be arrested for mean tweets and politicians campaigns can be waged through it then yea... no
And tbh its not just that... these online platforms have replaced the messaging systems like telegrams or mails, and if you told a person during the founding of the US that the chief post general could just open letters and edit them and get away with an apology you are deeply mistaken... he would have been hung if not lynched.
this is peoples communication that was altered, communication that can be used as legal evidence for or against them in court.
People seriously need to stop with not taking the internet seriously... the government needs to provide a legal framework for this like last fucking decade...
Jesus thats even worse than fp mods
But FP mods already log into people's accounts and post on them.

And it's pretty funny
Well it's their website, they can do with it as they please. If people dislike it they can go to another website. I'd say that no matter what they edited.

Shitposting on Reddit isn't a human right.
it doesn't sound like you do
:what:
If there's any reason I'm looking upset it's because it already happened over here. The Polish internet leans strongly right-wing, and the left is ridiculed and made an enemy through scare tactics. The end result? We elected an establishment party whose representatives ride on the waves of alt-right, neo-nazi groups organize violent marches, and gay people are discriminated against because "they can't have kids"

It does however deserve the same legal status as a letter sent through the mail... same with emails.
That includes not being tampered with in any way.
It used to be that the government HAD to provide a public forum (litterally where that term comes from btw...)
People dont communicate anymore through going to the local forum or sending snail posts... people do this online and it might be convenient for the powers that be to not grant this 'new' form of communication the same protections as snail post and public speech have (that people died for to get.) but it would be a loss of liberty to the degree in sneakiness and quantity unseen.
Most communication happens online, therefore the government should regulate it as if it is a public forum. with its protections, rights and restrictions that come with that.

Letters are delivered, not hosted. Postal services are also government institutions. Reddit is not.
Letters are delivered, not hosted. Postal services are also government institutions. Reddit is not.
loads of postal services are not government institutions but still work under the same laws and protections.
Reddit posts are also delivered, and even if they weren’t that’s a technicality... and an irrelevant one at that since public forums still have free speech 'offline'.
I can understand the claim that reddit is a blend between a public forum and a mail service... but both of those individually have more rights and protections then reddit does.
The government in this case is no longer providing the protection people have a right to for the reason that its laws are antiquated. the time the government could just place a public square, park or forum for people to talk is over... the communication happens online.
If we do not want to lose our rights to free speech i think the government needs to regulate private online forums and communication.

Wouldn't that result in a lot of legal troubles as most internet-related laws do? What if your post gets edited by automod? Does that count as offense? Do posts getting deleted count as an offense since they're silencing you? I don't even understand why you bring up free speech since it does not apply to private services like reddit or any other forum and should not either.

The point is, since reddit is so big and has become a nearly invaluable part of the communication infrastructure... can they still claim to be a private platform?
private package delivery companies for example, they could claim 'we can do pretty much what we want with these packages, so you cant do anything about it if we open them and steal your stuff because you gave them to us'
but that’s not the case... you have extensive legal protection against this stuff... even with a private company.
[editline]24th November 2016[/editline]
That's why regulations exist, most large companies can't do whatever they please despite being private entities. Internet-based companies are the exception to this.
If your post gets edited by automod, with regulations you would need to specify under what circumstances that would happen and log the changes that were made - simple as that.
Also note that these regulations do not apply to small to mid sized companies, and it would certainly not apply to Facepunch. This regulations are important with monopolies such as Facebook (social), Google (search), Twitter and Reddit - no one cares that a moderator of a small forum changed a couple of posts.
exactly... this is for companies that have formed themselves as the foundation of public life... not that one forum that has just 1 women posting reviews of every Buffy the vampire slayer episode.
jesus fuckin christ it's literally just words to a post why is this a big deal why does this have four fuckin pages about how it's a slippery slope or other such complete nonsense
I mean, like, christ. Moot fucked with /pol/ for, like, a week with just nothing but mass shitposting and auto-editing words like cuck. This all happened a year ago, too.
This has already been established as a thing that happens. What's the big difference now?
