Why would I do that when I can just use an OS that runs them?
You're acting like Win8 is an upgrade instead of preference.
And Virtual PCs are fucking slow so it's really not viable.
Why aren't you using XP then? Windows 7 runs a lot of old games awfully.
That's bollocks when it comes to playing old games. Yeah it is slow if you try to run BF4 in vm. For shit that doesn't work on 8 due to old APIs, VM will be just fine.

Most older games worth playing have community patches that allow recent OS versions to play them or they're available on GOG. Also it's not like you need even 10% of your i7's processing power to play Ultima II
I used to think that windows 8 was shit and designed for tablets etc
But then I actually bought win 8.1 for my new PC build because well, it can't be that bad and its better optimized. Been using 8 for a few weeks and IMO windows 8 is a lot better than 7 for desktop users. The (desktop) UI is similiar to 7 but has a more modern feel to it. My PC automatically boots to the desktop and I didn't even have to change any setting for that.
I used the start menu pretty rarely with 7, so I fail to see why people are so fucking mad about it being "gone". I pretty much used it only to quickly access the control panel/files/pics whatever. Practically the start menu hasn't changed much in 8.1 except that its much more minimalistic (just a right click menu with the shutdown, control panel, run, etc etc). If I would need to use the start menu to find programs I could just click it and it takes me to the "metro" UI which lists all the programs without having to open folders and shit like I would in 7 start menu, essentially its just a big version of the "all programs" of windows 7 start menu. You can forget everything about cancerous metro apps if you want.
Booting in 3 secs is nice, another great thing is the new task manager which is just simply a fuckton better. I haven't really found any downsides with 8.1 yet. All games and programs seem to work just fine

It really doesn't.
Literally DOSBox or it runs fine.

And you can't use DOSBox on windows 8 because?
I have had just as many problems getting old games to work on W8 as I have had problems getting old games to work on W7.

that is the most useful thing ever, thank you.
This thread has given me some great shortcuts on my Laptop, don't think I'll going to be seeing the metro screen at all, unless when I boot up.

Actually you simply can't play some older games on Windows 8 because Microsoft decided to remove hardware support for DirectDraw, it's just emulated with software now. So some older games run so slow that they are unplayable (Swat 3 for example). Windows 7 doesn't have this issue.

You can play SWAT3 on Windows 8.
http://www.gog.com/forum/swat_series/swat_3_low_framerate
Do you just give up when things don't work without any tweaking? Because that's what you have to do with most old games if you want them to work.
So, there's nothing wrong with it, people are just making lame reasons to complain about absolutely nothing. You can still use programs the same way as any other version of windows, it's just a different frontend to launch those programs. Once those programs are open, you use windows as you would use windows, and if you don't like the frontend for launching those programs, you grab a free alternative such as classic shell, which takes up no system resources at all, everybody's a winner. If windows 8 doesn't run on your hardware, time to stop living in 2004 and upgrade.
I have been using windows 8 since day one and I have no idea what people are complaining about, it actually feels terrible to go back to using a system such as 7 or older after using 8.
Well yeah that's the thing, I can use programs on W7 the same way I'd do on W8. The UI is very important, because it's by far the most significant difference between W7 and W8 for the end user. And for that reason I prefer using W7 since it offers the interface I like natively, without me having to rely on a third party modification.
I'm curious though: What feels terrible in 7 compared to 8 in your opinion? Personally after having used 8 a bit I didn't feel anything was missing when going back to 7.

I've read that thread ages ago. If you actually looked further than just the title you'd see that there is no solution available. The game simply can't be played on Windows 8 with decent framerate. Which again boils down to the lack of hw DirectDraw support. So every game that uses DirectDraw will run really, really slow on Windows 8.
The only way to get the game running at a playable framerate is changing the game's rendered to a software renderer, but that looks like shit and can't be used with higher resolutions.

I don't know, fallout and thief worked fine for me
then again, you said "Some" so what I said is redundant maybe. Even doom and that old PS1 star wars game worked fine for me, barely any tinkerly, if at all
How did this end up with arguments about the control panel, it's hardly updated since Vista.

It's just games that use DirectDraw. Other than that the support for old games is about the same as Windows 7 as far as I know.

I wonder if that's why Virtual Pool 3 crashes on Windows 8 (with any compatibility setting)
Too late MS, I already switched to Linux and it's great.
I work in IT. I have four screens. I need to be able to see everything on all of my screens, all the time.
The metro start menu is the worst thing in the world.
Have any of you 8-fans tried to remotely manage a server running 2012 (including R2)? Without using Remote Desktop, it's almost impossible to land my mouse on the gesture points quickly.
And no one tell me to install a program that gives me a menu back, it's not feasible on a large scale.
[editline]6th July 2014[/editline]
Microsoft keeps removing features people like - such as the auto-preview for unread messages in outlook 2013...they removed it for no reason whatsoever.

If you read it you would find that the solution is to run it in window mode with 16-bit colours, there were even solutions to go beyond the standard 800x600 resolution restriction from windowed mode.
Hell, this guy seems to have figured out how to play it fullscreen if I understand him right.
I've noticed that GOG uses the MS Compatibility Toolkit quite a bit on a lot of these titles. Although I don't own the GOG version, I do own the GOTY retail CD version. Since upgrading to Windows 8.1 I've become very familiar with MS Compatibility Toolkit. I've been installing my entire game library in this fresh install of Windows 8.1. SWAT 3 was the last game I installed and I stumbled across this thread while searching for a solution for the slowness. I've been able to fix it myself.
Do a Google search for "MS Compatibility Toolkit". Click on the first link that shows up from MS. You can download it from there. Once installed, create a new fix using the swat.exe and have it look exactly like what I have in the attached screenshot. The only compat flag that's needed is 8And16BitAggregateBits. Save the compat DB and install it. After that SWAT 3 performance will be greatly improved.

God damn do I sound pompous. It was the last in a few little niggles I had with Windows - but the reason that I say I prefer Linux is the package system is just so much nicer to deal with, particularly when it comes to programming.

Windows 8 has native support for a lot more file extensions and drivers, the startup time is incredibly fast and the performance in general is much better on my machine compared to when I was on 7.
