Unless you're using office applications.
Can you tell me more? I use office applications, mainly word and excel, and don't see any difference in speed. But I am not a power user though.
I'm going to say this with honesty: W8 is convoluted in quite a bit. I'm not going to install software to fix something that should work out of the box. I don't want to start a flamewar but when I do something as simple as changing a setting in W8(say pair a BT device iirc) it's a pain, so I switched back to W7. I don't use it on a tablet so I'm not a fan of it on a desktop.
I don't understand. W8 works in the same way W7 does. You have all of the options in the control panel that you have in W7. It has all the same features (plus more of course) and it has the same old desktop functionality every Windows has had since 1995. How exactly did W8 make anything convoluted for you?
It's not really faster in anything that matters. If you're on w7, there is no reason at all to upgrade to 8.
I see it the other way, there is no reason at all not to upgrade. It's faster and more responsive, you have a much more organized Task Manager with a better overview on what's going on, it's the newest platform ensuring you to keep up to date with any new technology anyone is throwing your way. It's honest to god plain better and performs faster. Personally I find the people that don't upgrade to W8 to be of the same kind that didn't want to upgrade from XP. It's the "It's fine as it is" or "if it ain't broken don't fix it" attitude. But that's how I personally view it.
I was a diehard Windows7 fanboy like the rest of them until I was given a laptop with it as a gift. I can say that it is a massive improvement in literally every way once you get over the whole "but it doesn't look identical to the last os! :(" hissy fit that has harmed the sales of a very improved and enjoyable OS.
Which is exactly how the new menu works! Its purely an aesthetic change, one for the better I might add.
One for the much worse. I've tried to use it several times and I find it to give me more of a headache and a complete and utter waste of space. There is no reason to block my entire view, taking the entire fucking screen up when I just want to open a program. If I'm watching a movie, modelling something or working in Photoshop or playing a game I don't want the entire screen to be blocked off just to open Firefox.
I actually like Windows 8, it's kind of interesting how they broke the cycle by making something that people were divided on.
You don't need a menu to open a program, just hit win + r, type in the name, hit enter. [t]http://u.cubeupload.com/chrishind10/Screenshot141.png[/t]
That's an extra key button to press, that is a waste of time and work. ;)
I really don't understand you Windows 7 luddies, this is far tidier and more attractive... [t]http://u.cubeupload.com/chrishind10/Screenshot140.png[/t] Than this tacky, glossy vestigiary which uses unwieldy nested directories.
The top is pretty, but I like how the bottom displays more options.

Why would you be opening your web browser while watching a movie anyway. And even then, you still have the taskbar at the bottom, just pin some programs there, like Firefox.

W8 does not offer anything major for many users. And for people who play old games it is even more bollocks to deal with. I see nothing wrong with skipping a version if it offers very little actual improvements. W8 is a bit faster, but that little bit does not justify upgrading when you can just wait for 9.
you don't need a full screen menu to open a program. just hit windows key, type in the name, hit enter
Exactly his point. You can do the same thing with windows 8. It just looks nicer.
Aesthetics are completely out of the argument since you can do so much shit to either one with stuff like rocketdock and such. My friend also has numerous problems with games on Windows 8. His system is practically identical to mine yet he has a variety of problems that all trace back to him being on windows 8.

But I used a SSD in that case, and had different computer habits. Spent more time being clean once I reformatted.

Been using w8 for a long time and never had a bluescreen. But then again neither did I in w7

Less people use w8 and game so nvidia probably doesn't update it as well. that and a lot of the programs I used for the MB / GPU I don't use at all now
Isn't Windows 9 gonna be free to all 8/8.1 users?
You guys don't even have to USE metro. You can go Window Key + S and have a search panel pop up, all while on your desktop. It's basically all I used the start menu on Windows 7 for, as I'm sure a lot of others did. And if you REALLY want to access a program in two clicks, and don't want a crowded taskbar for whatever reason, it's not that hard to just hit the window key and click a square.
It's the same exact shit. Just install Classic Shell and you have your start menu back and everything.
Fixing Windows 8 on your own device is all well and good, but why does nobody ever mention the students or employees forced to endure Windows 8 every day at school/work where they're prevented from making changes to the OS? Although I guess it won't be much of a problem anymore if Microsoft don't fuck up their next OS.
Unless you are literally operating your start menu while drawing dicks in Photoshop simultaneously I don't think there is much to complain about.
Workflow workflow workflow workflow workflow workflow. The start menu is a press on the button, a quick swipe to the left, pick what you want and back to it. The start screen is a giant fucking screen that uses 10x more space than necessary that forces you to move your mouse around all over the screen depending on where you program is, centering your visual attention at wherever that program is placed, pick that and then settle your eyes back where you're supposed to be for what you did previously and then back to it. It's not a huge thing, but it's still quite the huge thing. It completely changes how you focus and where you focus. The start menu is always in the lower left, the programs are always in that small portion of the left side on your screen. With the start menu EVERYTHING changes, your entire screen changes, nothing looks the same anymore, it's not something sliding and covering up a part of your screen, it's more like a game when it boots up and blocks your entire screen forcing you to give your undivided attention to it, and then your program could be literally anywhere on the screen within a pretty big set area. Start menu: small overlap that is always in the same place Start Screen: changes the entire screen forcing you to explicitly focus on it and your program could be anywhere. Watching a movie and browsing the internet at the same time is entirely possible.
tbh i like windows 8 because i never really used the start menu anyways except to occasionally get to control panel, otherwise i just have what i need open or pinned to my taskbar. if i want to use something that isn't a steam game then i just navigate to the folder

You need to get your PC to a doctor.
I had to use my friend's W8 laptop for a few weeks and I really didn't like it. It seemed that to do anything that would usually take me two clicks had to be done by doing genstures on the trackpad and going to different menus and shit like that. I was probably doing it wrong but in that case they really fucked up the user friendliness aspect of it.

That should be a lot better for your buttfucking workflow. Get a nice icon pack, make them all look uniform, there you go. Nice design, and functional.
By launching a new program you are performing a mental context switch anyway, you need a new program which does something other than what you are currently doing, it has never bothered me.
Imagine you're wearing Google Glasses. Do you prefer: A) boxes that float above your vision B) single boxes that blocks your entire vision? Exact same effect.
Lets hope intel actually makes usb3 drivers for it I actually cannot use windows 8 because I have an intel motherboard and windows has super shitty native drivers for usb 3, resulting in crazy lockups no matter what I do. I admit I really hope windows 9 has the option to use metro. You know, like how, you know, windows 8 should be. That's the reason everyone hated it. I love metro but "just get classic shell" is not an argument.
intel's USB3 drivers are integrated in to windows 8, lol
Imagine you're wearing Google Glasses. Do you prefer: A) boxes that float above your vision B) single boxes that blocks your entire vision?
Windows wasn't designed to be worn and secondary to the world, it's an unfair comparison.

i hate using the start screen. i have my mouse set to 400dpi and rolling through it is a chore it also looks terrible
Windows wasn't designed to be worn and secondary to the world, it's an unfair comparison.
in many cases it is all your attention is focused on so it is the same basic concept
