I hate the "metro" full screen start menu but I love Windows 8. So I use ClassicShell.
Other than the fullscreen start menu which can EASILY be changed there is nothing really wrong with upgrading to W8 unless you want to just wait for W9.
I'm talking about using start to pull up the metro UI to do it. I honestly didn't know about that when I used W8, I used it like I used W7: searched for control panel item and used it
In Win8.1 it looks like they renamed it. The Metro control panel is called PC settings with the Metro icon and the normal Control Panel is called Control Panel with the original Aero icon when you search for control panel. 8.1 fixed a lot of little usability issues that 8 had.

is that really what the apps screen looks like in windows 8? dear god. that's a cluttered mess
no wonder i remember searching for everything instead of using that in consumer preview
lol listen to yourself
"just download this unlicensed third party application that makes it exactly like the previous version and it'll be 100% better than the previous version!!!"
"i'm gonna ignore every reason why the newer version is better while also conveniently ignoring the fact that it's easy to revert the one change i don't like"
alright, let's open photosh...where is it
I think it's going in the right direction. The return of the start menu, metro apps being ran in a window, the removal of the start screen for desktop users, the removal of the desktop for tablets < 10". It seems to me Microsoft is getting Windows tidied up.
Well, I can't play most of my games on it.
I can't edit video on it, either. When there's good Windows program emulation (Wine is shitty IMO), or 99% of games support it, and Adobe supports Linux, I'll install it in a heartbeat. But for now, I can't even use OS X.
Everyone I know hates Windows 8 mainly because of the forced metro and all the small pointless changes. I consider myself fairly tech savvy and yet I still had to Google how to do the most basic of things.
Does anyone else feel perfectly happy with Windows 7?

yes, a lot of consumer complaints with windows 8 are to do with how unintuitive it is. there's a quick tutorial when you install it/log in for the first time, but it doesn't even explain a lot of things

at least i don't need to spend 40 hours opening stupid folders plus i never see that view because i pinned shit i use
[editline]6th July 2014[/editline]
honestly the only fuck up with 8's ui was hiding away the shut down button (which they fixed: )
other than that it's people bandwagoning the fuck against the os
Will the cycle continue?
Windows 95 actually gave Windows a non-retarded UI and a shitload of usability, though.

You can pin shit in w7 start too. And it also has search on the bottom, results are just smaller
Windows 95 actually gave Windows a non-retarded UI and a shitload of usability, though.
this cycle is always full of shit and conveniently forgets that windows 2000 existed and that xp was a buggy pile of fuck until service pack 2
How do you even bluescreen from playing games in the first place? You need to get your PC to a doctor.
with a 770 and max settings
never bluescreen on w7
intel's USB3 drivers are integrated in to windows 8, lol
and yet windows 8 is much slower with usb 3 devices and I can't find w8 usb drivers anywhere on the intel site
I spend a few days trying to fix the shit but couldn't

XHCD was the entire cause
It's like windows 7 just faster.
It's the same exact shit. Just install Classic Shell and you have your start menu back and everything.
Also yes, all the hate for Windows 8 is based on misinformation and misunderstandings. It's just a straight up better version of Windows 7.
I adore metro and windows 8 in every way
but needing a third party application for start menu is seriously bullshit.
Sitting there scrolling through a list of programs is stupid anyway. I barely use the start menu or metro menu. Just type what you wanted to open. And guess what. Both Windows 7 and 8 have that feature.
Well, I can't play most of my games on it.
More and more games are being ported to linux and the properitary drivers are getting better by the same (same goes for the open source ones). Games that are not ported yet can be played using wine and if that fails you can use the new feature in linux 3.6 (iirc) to give a vm direct hardware access and thus getting about the same FPS using a windows VM as running native windows.
literally all of my bluescreens on w7 were from shitty ps3 controller drivers not handling a partial disconnect right
You can pin shit in w7 start too. And it also has search on the bottom, results are just smaller
press the windows key and just start typing
works on 8 just like 7

(and you can change where you search too and opt out of the online results on the bottom)

if these people are so uptight about installing one program to customize their start menu how will they ever use linux
According some rumored sources, if Windows 9 is the supposed Window Threshold, it's going to be a free upgrade to everyone who owns Windows 7 or 8.1
plus with how strong 8 got rejected over being slightly different switching to a completely different os would be an odd thing to do
It's strange, y'know. It's as if the Windows OS has a similar curse to the old Star Trek movies. Whilst stuff like Wrath of Khan and The Voyage Home were well-received whilst The Motion Picture and The Search For Spock weren't so beloved, it's pretty apparent that Windows XP and Windows 7 were (and in the latter case still is) great for their timeframes whilst we didn't really like Windows Vista and Windows 8. Windows "9" seems to have promise, but even so we can hope that whatever Microsoft does for Windows 10 is enough to break the cycle similar to the modern Star Treks with Abrahms and Sherlock Khan. (well, Benedict Cucumberbatch definitely brought over a kinda Sherlocky spin to Khan Noonian Singh in Into Darkness)

the cycle is not real and windows xp was shit when it launched
Y'know what'd be a nice, new feature? Native multiple desktop/screen support. You know, that kind of thing that tons of Linux window managers and desktop environments have had for ages now where you can switch between like ten different sets of desktops, each of which keeps all the windows you had opened on it preserved in the same positions as they were before? This is the biggest thing I miss when I boot into windows from Linux. It's amazing when you're doing work that requires a lot of research because switching between your browser and editor is just MOD4+(1 or 2), rather than fucking around with alt tab and getting windows that you don't want.

Aw sweet, I'll be able to upgrade my main desktop for free then!
I put start8 on my windows 8. I got the OS for free from my uni so I figured I might as well try it out.
I've had like 0 problems with it.
It's the "It's fine as it is" or "if it ain't broken don't fix it" attitude. But that's how I personally view it.
well, you're wrong. you might encounter some people like that, but that doesn't negate the actual problems with the OS. I'm someone who is intrigued by change more than anything else. whenever I've upgraded to a new OS I've always enjoyed screwing around with all the new features and figuring out what's been changed/improved. I'm also one of like 5 people who firmly believes that vista was a good OS and just failed because of bad PR. all that being said, windows 8 has been a nightmare every time I've tried to use it. there are thousands of little flaws that just irritate the shit out of me. what you have to consider is you're probably a more casual user than most of the people with actual valid complaints about windows 8, so there's no reason for you to notice the more subtle flaws.
Boot times are not faster if you cold-boot. It is faster only because it does hybrid where it hibernates some things. Just hibernate your w7 and it will boot just as fast.
From my limited experience power management is the same since both w7 and w8 drain battery on my laptop at the same rate.
Have no idea about the other things so no comment.
The power management on Windows 8 was a bit hit and miss on my laptop, but I had managed to wear the battery 30% in a year of use, so it was probably confused as fuck. But it was certainly lasting a lot longer than Windows 7 did (with a power plan designed for the laptop might I add).
However, even the tools in Windows 8 were better. The task manager was fucking awesome, the search was a hell of a lot more flexible (internet searching? in my start menu? ohh yess). The only real issue with Windows 8.1 is the Windows Store is still in a dire state that means portable users are getting fucked over hard.
I hope with Windows 9 they even further intergrate windows phone 8.1 into it.
Windows phone 9 will probably release together with it(i hope).
i wonder if microsoft are ever going to update their icons
