Im glad someone is saying this. How long has religion had a monopoly of spatting shit out like they are the truth. As soon as us atheists speak out its the end of the world. Fucking religion makes me sick. How can so many people be so fucking retarded to think they will still be alive after their dead. Keep these billboards up, it's a bout time this world realized their not some special product of a man in the sky. Atheists are dicks because their sick of having to deal with hypocritical religious assholes who flip shit that we speak out. We don't want to watch our species be this dumb, sorry if your offended, but come on. Does no one else think this should be a major priority of our species? Like come on, this has gone on long enough.
so hardcore

God I hate the American Atheists association. They constantly estimate themselves as better than religious people, think that because they are Atheists they have any sort of power over someone else's opinions/beliefs, are butthurt about anything, have no respect for religion (disagreeing with it is one thing, despising it like it's the cause of all wrong in the world is being retarded) and are mostly closer to Anti-theism than actual Atheism. This, and the fact they had the balls to grab a symbol that represents normally science as a logo for their little circlejerk, which is mixing things up even more. I know crazy religious people do the same shit on their side, but is it a reason to do that sort of stupid shit on your own ? No it's not. If AA had any sort of credibility or put any sort of thought into their so-called cause they would be wise enough not to do what they are actually complaining about concerning religious people - blind, pointless hatred directed toward an entire concept rather than toward what is actually the problem. If Creationists are part of the people giving religious people a bad image, then American Atheists is part of the people giving Atheists a bad image. Fuck both of them. Fuck all extremists.
Fuck all extremists.
Really now? I don't think I've heard of any atheist killing religious people because of religion yet.
so hardcore
hurr durr so hardcore lol u so edgy go lissin to to hevy metel music and wuer balck cloths lol tool fag lolol u only beliv things in serviss of th ulterier motiv of looking kool oh I'm sorry. That was uncalled for, I just instinctively do that every time I hear someone who who has a strong opinion on something.
Really now? I don't think I've heard of any atheist killing religious people because of religion yet.
You don't need to kill people to be an idiot and a bigot. It's not a contest about who did the most stupid shit, it's just about how retarded your message and intentions are no matter how far you take them.
You don't need to kill people to be an idiot and a bigot.
You do to become an extremist though.
Well, I don't think creationism itself is really all that stupid - it wouldn't be entirely stupid to assume that there is a god, just that he's really stupid and flat-out malignant most of the time. I think that, largely, we simply don't know enough about the universe to be making any real assumptions on the creation of the universe. Big bang's pretty much proven science - anything outside of "99% sure" is basically fair game as far as I'm concerned.
Evolution is proven as well. We have seen it in action, and all the evidence is there. In face of that, denying it in favor of creationism is stupid.
I really don't understand this mindset that says if someone deeply believes something, you're not allowed to call bullshit. All the billboard is doing is saying these religions are myths. They're not INSULTING anyone, they're making a statement. Insulting an idea is NOT the same thing as insulting the people who believe that idea. If they want to get all rowdy about it, that's THEIR problem. They are within their right to create a counter-billboard summarizing why it's NOT a myth. But they won't do that, and you KNOW why they won't do that. Thing is, the reason people get so angry when they hear atheists has NOTHING to do with their decided lack of respect for their god, or their possible "allegiance with Satan". They're angry because deep down, they KNOW the atheist is right, but accepting that means they give up the promise of immortality, ultimate justice, the chance of seeing their lost loved ones again, and the notion that the Universe is objectively good. They're angry, they're scared, and they don't like us reminding them of those niggling doubts in their own minds. I know, because it's how I was before I realized the value of accepting the truth over downing the painkillers.
There's a difference between having a strong opinion and being a douchebag about it.
Yeah what an asshole to stoop the level of religous folks for the last 2 thousand years, completely out of order. :P
You do to become an extremist though.
I don't think you do. I think that in order to be called an extremist you just need to push your beliefs at such a point you are basically biased about everything and refuse to admit other sorts of way of thoughts may be possible without being more or less valuable than your own.
You do to become an extremist though.
No, you just need to be extreme in your beliefs.
No, you just need to be extreme in your beliefs.
Uhh

They always feel like they are invested with a mission, a goal that is to turn everyone else into your own way of thought, regardless of how good it actually is. I agree that in the end, Atheism is the "rightest" concept, because it's the most realist one. But is it really the one people want and the one we need ? I don't think so. I you can live without a god, that's good for you, but people do need a god to stay on a right path or feel comfortable about their life and their place in the universe. Calling them poor little lost victims in denial of their state is just assuming they are actually unhappy with their beliefs, and assuming YOU are the one who will be able to help them out. As for the myth part, it's all about words. You know what religion is ? It's religion. It may be grammatically a myth if you take definitions for exactly what they are, but if you are going to take something that is commonly named X, and call it Y instead, it means you have some sort of message to give, whatever it can be. Keep in mind that a lot of words today are not used in their strict grammatical sense, the one you'd find in a dictionary. Irony is a good example - it's used every day to designate specific situations that have nothing to do with the original meaning of the term. In other words, if you're going to call religion a Myth, you are deliberately despising it and if you're writing it in big letters on a billboard, you are deliberately trying to make people despise you. [editline]7th March 2012[/editline] There is no such thing as a belief that becomes sacred because someone believes hard enough in it. You can question everything people believe in, as long as you do it respectfully and with modesty, which just isn't the case with that billboard.
the new atheism movement is really fucking stupid
No, you just need to be extreme in your beliefs.
Muslim extremists bomb those who disagree with them. Christian extremists invade and slaughter those who disagree with them. Atheist extremists put up billboards? Doesn't seem quite right to me. People are awfully quick to call atheists "extremist" or "militant".

Slippery slope.
the new atheism movement is really fucking stupid
Yeah, stupid atheist movement. Getting their beliefs on the public square. Challenging the status quo. It really rustles my jimmies.
Also haha people thinking militant atheist is actually a thing. I thought Facepunch hated the far right? Why are they parroted in every religious thread involving atheism?
Yeah, stupid atheist movement. Getting their beliefs on the public square. Challenging the status quo. It really rustles my jimmies.
Exposing your beliefs =! insulting other's.
Yeah, stupid atheist movement. Getting their beliefs on the public square. Challenging the status quo. It really rustles my jimmies.
yeah, because insulting someone's belief system for the sake of insulting a belief system is really intelligent dialogue.
yeah, because insulting someone's belief system for the sake of insulting a belief system is really intelligent dialogue.
If someone is actually confident that what they believe is true they shouldn't be getting their panties in a bunch when someone else calls it a myth. For example when creationists repeatedly misrepresent and criticize the theory of evolution it usually results in laughter by educated people, no one actually gets offended.
Exposing your beliefs =! insulting other's.
It's not an insult, it's the truth. They are myths. Hey haven't we done this song and dance before? Oh wait Ganerumo.
yeah, because insulting someone's belief system for the sake of insulting a belief system is really intelligent dialogue.
Except its not for the sake of insulting it, its for the sake of challenging the religious person to consider the very thing they build their lifestyle around (literally, in the case of hasidic jews) The only problem is most religious people can't take criticism and realize their faith is paper-thin, so immediately hide behind the shield of "HE'S INSULTING ME" instead of critically thinking.
It's like they're trying to start a war.
It's not an insult, it's the truth. They are myths. Hey haven't we done this song and dance before?
Calling a religion a myth is like calling a car a bunch of metal and plastic.
It's like they're trying to start a war.
It's more like they're exercising the first amendment
Well OP, kind of ironic how youre taking sides and the side you happen to be taking is the one that is downplaying everything and saying it isnt news yet you just posted it here to stir up some more controversy.
It's more like they're exercising the first amendment
Exercising the first amendment doesn't make you right all the time and won't make you any less of a moron if you use it to insult others.
Oh, so it's like the time the atheists bitched, moaned and got that piece of debris removed from ground zero because it naturally fell in the shape of a 't', except they put this billboard there on purpose. Hmm.
