Atheist billboard stirs up unneeded controversy, yet again - this time it's Hasidic Jews whose craw
If someone is actually confident that what they believe is true they shouldn't be getting their panties in a bunch when someone else calls it a myth.
For example when creationists repeatedly misrepresent and criticize the theory of evolution it usually results in laughter by educated people, no one actually gets offended.
And whenever some religious nutjob calls Atheist profanity and satan-work, who gets all upset and butthurt ? Not your common Atheist, just the ones who think it's an important enough detail about themselves to make it the goal of their whole life.
It's not an insult, it's the truth. They are myths. Hey haven't we done this song and dance before?
Oh wait Ganerumo.
Except its not for the sake of insulting it, its for the sake of challenging the religious person to consider the very thing they build their lifestyle around (literally, in the case of hasidic jews)
The only problem is most religious people can't take criticism and realize their faith is paper-thin, so immediately hide behind the shield of "HE'S INSULTING ME" instead of critically thinking.
Maybe instead of trying to disprove their beliefs and being an intolerant prick, you just let them believe in what they want to believe in?

If there is really something people should fight against, Atheist or not, it's extremism which actually brings people to do bad things, not religion as a whole just because a small portion of religious people are extremists.
And as far as I know, there are a lot of religious people who despise extremists, so yeah.

I don't think many atheists would get upset or butthurt. Personally I would find it humorous
Maybe instead of trying to disprove their beliefs and being an intolerant prick, you just let them believe in what they want to believe in?
No one believes in something because they want to. They believe in something because they honestly think it's true or have good reasons to think it's true. If what they believe can be demonstrated to be false, but they believe it anyway, then that is called a delusion.
Maybe instead of trying to disprove their beliefs and being an intolerant prick, you just let them believe in what they want to believe in?
Maybe if I lived in a fantasy world where religion didn't dictate my every day life then I'd care less.
And no being an intolerant prick would be burning them for heresy, not calling their stupid beliefs stupid.
I don't think many atheists would get upset or butthurt. Personally I would find it humorous
They don't, re-read my post. Only extreme atheists (the ones that get in the American Atheists associations and instead of being passively atheist like they should be, which is just living without a god and not making a big deal out of it, decide to fight for it to be the world norm) do, and they are only a small part of Atheists just like religious nutjobs are a small part of religious people.

You are creating a false dichotomy by implying "atheistic extremists" exist.

lol "extreme atheists" lmao
Okay they can be passive when Christianity and all the other major religions are passive as well. deal?
It's more like they're exercising the first amendment
Exercising doesn't mean you go out of your way to cause trouble. Religious attacks are no different than ethnic slurs.
I do not understand people calling these billboards insulting, they are calling out to people who are already non-religious or at least questioning what they know and trying to get them out of a community they feel isolated in.
If this billboard came out and said "religion is stupid quick get the fuck out of there" then it would be dumb.
This whole idea that calling bullshit out as bullshit is insulting or should not be done for the sake of tradition/religion is bullshit.
If we could remove religion from politics in America do you not think that A) it would be easy to call them out as bigots or B) not have them spur on this shit to get ahead in those communities.
For Chirst sake I have to put up with all the little church sign posts that are like "Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil", I think religious people can put up with this.
Calling a religion a myth is like calling a car a bunch of metal and plastic.
How so? You wouldn't hesitate to call the religions of Ancient Greece myths. The only difference is that Christianity is around in contemporary times.
Exercising doesn't mean you go out of your way to cause trouble. Religious attacks are no different than ethnic slurs.
Several things wrong with this.
First off totally wrong with the first amendment stance. It was created almost entirely so people could go out of their way to say controversial things. I'd suggest reading up on American history.
Secondly, "out of your way"? It's the American Atheists. That's what they do. Promote atheism through honest criticism of organized religion. It's extremely effective.
Finally, calling a religious belief a myth is not an attack, just a quantifiable statement based on the definition of the word myth.
I propose a theory that sun rotates around earth. It's ok it's been proven and is true, you still have to respect me because I believe in what I want to believe and not in what is true.
Religion IS a myth and if you disagree you got something terribly wrong with you. If religion should be doubted that it is a myth, so should Harry Potter and LOTR, cause who knows, maybe these events really happened?
How so? You wouldn't hesitate to call the religions of Ancient Greece myths. The only difference is that Christianity is around in contemporary times.
Yeah, and Poseidon wouldn't hesitate to open up a category 5 on his dumb ass.
I asked my dad why he hates atheists, here's what he told me: "Fuck those fucking atheist bastards, they will burn in hell for worshiping satan. How can someone worship satan if they don't believe in god?" The fucking dumb hurts me.
Moral of the story: Billboards are ok as long as they aren't written by Atheists

He'd probably say the same of the ancient Egyptian religions.

Pretty much sums up the average religious person's view of atheists (that I've seen).
Moral of the story: Billboards are ok as long as they aren't written by Atheists
More like: Never critize anything regarding other peoples beliefs because they might get their feelings hurt.
ftfy
Teach me your ways, I hope to be as witty and funny as you some day, great master
ftfy
So you mean when people are doing what they believe in, using their resources to get a message out, they are attention whoring douchebags.
Can one of you help me understand why you care so much. Its not like you're being oppressed by the Church who often give to charity and help out families in need.
Pretty much sums up the average religious person's view of atheists (that I've seen).
More like sums up the idiotic religious person's view of regular atheists.
And his dad's behavior also sums up the idiotic atheist's view of regular religious people.
So you mean when people are doing what they believe in, using their resources to get a message out, they are attention whoring douchebags.
When the message is as retarded as "HEY LISTEN TO ME YOUR RELIGION IS A LIE YOU SHOULD GIVE IT UP", yeah, it's being an attention whoring douchebag.
ftfy
But. But.
Billboards were created to raise attention to something.
That's why they are large boards on the sides of roads.
Holy shit.
Can one of you help me understand why you care so much. Its not like you're being oppressed by the Church who often give to charity and help out families in need.
There are a number of reasons:
Why is same-sex marriage still illegal in most parts of the country? Religious opposition.
Why is it not illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation? Religious opposition.
Why is abortion/contraception/etc. not as available as it should be? Religious opposition.
Why is 'In God We Trust' on our currency? Religious pressure.
The list goes on.
This is worse than that time Ganerumo said gravity couldn't be explained with science so some parts of religion are true!
Can one of you help me understand why you care so much. Its not like you're being oppressed by the Church who often give to charity and help out families in need.
Actually yes the church is oppressing me for my lack of/beliefs. Especially in a religious community.
Church is the biggest scam invented. Their stupid rules and laws have no place in our modern society.
Can one of you help me understand why you care so much. Its not like you're being oppressed by the Church who often give to charity and help out families in need.
They are caring because they believe that because some people use religion as an excuse to do terrible shit (they would have done anyway just with another excuse if religion wasn't around), religion as a whole should disappear.
It's like requesting the disappearance of every car on the planet because someone used one to willingly run over some guy he wanted to kill.

Actually depending on where you live in America, your day to day life is prescribed rules straight from scripture. Gay marriage isn't allowed under sodomy laws, blue laws like no alcohol purchases on Sunday. Politicians can't be elected unless they tell everyone how Christian they are.
It might be different where you live but in America where 80% of the county self-identifies as Christian (not religious, Christian alone) then sometimes you have to go on the offensive to preserve your way of life.
