Those Tanuki look pretty pissed though. Then again I haven't seen much traditional Japanese-style work where people looked very jovial in any way. I remember at an Oriental foods store they had some Japanese candy with a real pissed-off looking samurai on the front called "Hapi", which I read as "happy" for ironical purposes.
