"Burn fat faster"
You just need to eat only fat and vegetables (almost no carbonates) and body switches to "ketosis".
When body is in ketosis it actually burns only fat for energy. Including brains.
If things go wrong, maybe. But put genetic design in the hands of a skilled artisan, and things could turn out amazing.

And we still have nuclear weapons everywhere and old reactors while we use Uranium as fuel source instead of Thorium because we didn't think ahead.
Ehh, I wouldn't say that, we did think ahead, but the idiots who don't want to listen or are misinformed about nuclear power are the reason newer reactors can't get off the bloody ground.
It's people getting in the way of progress, just like they will with genetic manipulation.
Good going, China.
The sooner we can get to commercial genetic manipulation/engineering, the better.
omg who necro'd this thread, what china did isn't really groundbreaking yet because its got an 80+% failure raiting, it'll be there someday but they canceled the rest of the trial because it wasn't working, they're going to perfect the technique on other embryos first then return to human embryos
If in a few years I could prevent my kid from developing my Crohn's disease, I would be very happy.
Yeah I've considered adoption instead, but I can't shake the feeling that I'd never love them like my own kid, and even if I did, without a biological kid, how would I know for sure?
I adopted a cat when I was a kid and I loved it as if I had created that cat with my own seed, I figure its the same for human adoption
Don't jump ahead of yourself; this technique is only good for issues causes by a single gene. Any manner of meaningful enhancement will require - at minimum - tens of genes. It's fundamentally a repair tool, nothing more.
Do you really think that they are just gonna stop researching further? In the end China might be the first country to do eugenics on a genetical level. You want to live longer and have more positive traits? Just pay it with your money.
Just eliminating disease? Try a new era of human evolution with giving rich people new genetic traits to age slower, burn fat easier, lowered cholesterol, even radiation resistance. It will be a new era in human misery.
Fixed. I'll never understand how a forum as left-wing as Facepunch is happy to let this kind of thing happen. [sp]Because the cultural Marxists I tells ya[/sp]

But vegetables consist mainly of carbohydrates?
Good going, China.

Ehhhhh, the less commercialised this technology is the better, this is a public health interest for the entire planet, patenting genetics isn't a good direction to go (unless it's actually new genetics invented by someone)

Because nations with socialised health care would be stupid not to offer this treatment or subsidise it for their citizens, completely eliminating a lot of disabilities and diseases is one hell of an investment.

China's record on human rights means they're not exactly the best country to be working on this. Plus 'commercial'? No, we want nationalized government run genetic manipulation under services like the NHS. This needs to be offered for free to everyone who needs it when it's a viable technology, not to the highest bidders only.
A tiny bit off topic, but does any biologist here know if science has figured out yet how DNA translates in where to grow what body part? I just can't see how molecules can know their position in the embryo

It has to do with cell division more than DNA. It's a long ardorous process and I don't really trust anyone with it
as with any new technology, there are endless uses for good and bad. This one I am more afraid of though because of how extreme the bad could be.
as with any new technology, there are endless uses for good and bad. This one I am more afraid of though because of how extreme the bad could be.
You know the good outweigh the bad uses imo, plus the good is pretty fucking extreme too. I would say curing the 1st world's genetic disorders/diseases before they even touch an entire generation is pretty fucking great.
If experimentation on human embryos isn't allowed but experimentation on animal embryos is, what if someone ends up making animals with a human level of intelligence as a loophole (we already almost know what genes induce brain wrinkling) and we end up with furries completely on accident
But the "furries" have completely different innate morals and instincts and can't fit in with society because although they're super smart, they're barely human and have no way of communicating
What an ethical can of worms would that open up?

Think of the porn industry boom though

3 weeks is far from a necro bump. :v:
If this works (and one day it will) Humans will have dominion over nature
humans are nature ya dingus. the idea of dominating nature is like a dog chasing it's tail but with more ecological disaster
this all sounds a bit too brave new worldy for me but whatever. scientists are pretty cool as long as they got their ethics in check and i'm preeeeeetty sure modern day china is ethics central.
maybe they'll engineer people who can safely breathe smog and drink toxic waste.

I'm not an embryonic biologist but it's to do with gradients of transcription factors. Varying concentrations determine the fate of pluripotent cells.

I know that I don't think banning it will be effective, it's an inevitability. That doesn't stop it from being sorta scary when you think about it.
