I'd still put the CV ahead of the Focus. If you really insist on a truly global car, the Mondeo/Fusion. Though, I will admit that once you gut the Focus and stuff a Mustang powertrain in it becomes quite the machine... Nah. Firstly, the 70s gave us this: Secondly, yes, 70s era smog motors were beyond choked. But here's the thing: 4-5 hours in your driveway with a 9/16" wrench and $500 worth of stuff from Summitt Racing will wake that smog motor right the fuck up. Turn it into the fire breathing monster it would have been had it come out in the late 60s. 70s cars had no balls stock, but if you have even a rudimentary understanding of how engines work and access to some basic hand tools you can fix them just fine. No reason to hate them because of something so easily fixed. If I had to choose a generation of cars to automatically hate it'd be this one. Mechanically they've never been 'better'. More efficient, more refined, blabla. But visually pretty much everything on the roads looks like it's half melted. Nothing's pretty anymore. On top of that modern cars are forced by law to babysit and nanny the driver, assuming the driver has no fucking idea what they're doing and not getting out of the way when asked to. Which grinds my gears. I'd rather have a smogged out 1970s sedan, because at least that will do what I tell it to do without questioning the input...
I'm well aware of all of this, and I certainly made an exception for some. It's really 72+ where smog laws took hold, and even then it's just a matter of removing all the bullshit to make them pass smog as you said. The only shame is John Q Public doesn't know this stuff, so those cars were forever doomed with infamy. It's part of why Japanese cars are so popular now. People quit trusting American cars after that, partly because instead of actually spending time trying to make cars that would pass smog with decent power they spent all their time trying to keep that bill from being signed into law.
Really though, there's a ton of great looking 80's and 90's cars. Works the same for trucks, too. 1980s F-series: Current F-series: 1980s Silverado: Current Silverado: 1984 Dodge half-ton: [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/df/89DodgeRam_F34.jpg[/t] Current Ram: Though, I will say the current Ram isn't ugly. I still prefer the looks of the old one but the new one isn't bad looking. One of the few modern vehicles that isn't blaaah.
I rode in a F-Series on vacation in mexico last week, smooth as fuck. [editline]3rd September 2013[/editline] 1997 ish

One of the few modern vehicles that isn't blaaah.
I like the new models of those cars much more, in both form and function. Also, the current ram feels the most dated, and is the ugliest of the bunch IMHO Despite what most people think, we are actually going through a golden age of cars right now. Companies everywhere are making special niche cars, like the Ford Raptor, Chevy Z28, Focus ST (in North America though!!), and uncountable others. Car companies right now are giving the majority of auto enthusiasts tons of options right now, and good ones too!
What about the Crown Vic, guys? It's FAR better as a car than the Focus ever hoped to be. Tough enough to serve as a police cruiser, highway patrol interceptor, NYC taxicab, and yet comfortable and quiet enough to carry you around in comfort for a good price. They're fairly fuel efficient, they can actually get out of their own way, they'll last 30+ years, they'll carry the same amount of people in higher comfort, they have enough trunkspace to tote around a Fiat 500, and they look way better.
i haven't ever seen a single vic in the uk.
i haven't ever seen a single vic in the uk.
AFAIK, the Crown Vic was only sold in the US, Canada, and Middle East.
They sell them as police replicas: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Crown-Victoria-2008-Police-Interceptor-/230989556207?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item35c80ce9ef But why have a 4.6 litre engine in a county where petrol is £8 a gallon when you can have this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2007-57-Volvo-S60-T5-Ex-Police-103k-VAT-Qualifying-NEW-STOCK-CAR-JUST-IN-/231029269926?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item35ca6ae5a6 Smaller engine but more power
