You do realize the latest models of Reapers actually allow for it to "Free-Fire." Free-Fire as in, choose it's own targets independently, you know that, right?
fuck [editline]02:57AM[/editline] again
This is not true. These robots are made so if it ever looses connection from the controller, it will automatically direct its own flight path to a airforce landing strip. The people who make these make sure that if anything ever happens, it wont go horribly wrong.
Wow fucking shit that isn't a robot thats a fucking UAV. Fucking stupid press /nerdrage
I, for one welcome our new jet overlords.
Not true! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MQ-9_Reaper#Design_and_development Operator Optional, what it basically does is goes through a very large library of "images" it has downloaded onto it's onboard computer, where it processes targets based on threat, value, etc. that means it's able to tell the difference between a Technical and, say, a Ford Pickup. The option to fire is open to the Drone.
The option to fire is NOT open to the drone, Never, Ever, EVER. It's open to a whole chain of command through humans, with the order to fire Decided by humans, and executed by Humans
It wasn't a threat except for the possibility of it flying into neighbouring airspace and getting some other countries pissed off. They just lost communication with it and it kept flying forwards, hardly dangerous.
Pretty much this. They didn't want to risk it crash-landing in another country and causing injury, so they shot it down. The article makes it sounds like it was sentient and self aware.
14 Hellfire missiles - each capable of destroying a tank or flattening a building
My ass.
I, for one welcome our new jet overlords.
Anti-air is gonna kick yo overlord's rear.
Actually when it would be (semi) autonomous it would be better, because then it just could fly back to the base on its own. Actually they should do that right now, things are expensive enough already.
I'll be back.
See the image at dork shelf. And I assume that the human controlling it had something go wrong so it kept going in 1 direction like a giant RC plane that's armed.
Is it not possible that some foreign goup initially jammed the drones remote control?
Is it not possible that some foreign goup initially jammed the drones remote control?
Sure if they've got a powerful trasmitter spare and all the time to find the right frequency.
Humans are better than robots in warfare anyways.
It's just a drone. If it was like, some Terminator type robot, it'd be awesome. But this, this is just... meh.
It's just a drone. If it was like, some Terminator type robot, it'd be awesome. But this, this is just... meh.
It would of commanded everyone to attack the other country.
Probably just someone else took control of it... and then everyone over-reacts because thats what news reporters and governments do...
Probably just someone else took control of it... and then everyone over-reacts because thats what news reporters and governments do...
I can imagine a child standing on a ground with a model plane controller. :v: But it's not easy to just "take control of it". The connection would obviously be heavily encrypted, so that's unlikely.
So the plane just flew off having a mind of its own, and in the end an aircraft had to shoot it down before it did anything stupid? Doesn't sound as exciting as 'rebelled against its human controllers' does.
The way it's worded; "An American Reaper flying hunter-killer robot assassin" and saying it 'rebelled' made it sound like it was shouting fuck yoouuu humans over it's tannoy system (installed for just such an occasion) whilst making sure it's hellfire missiles wrote "suck it bitches" in the air before hitting their targets of orphanages and maternity hospitals. I wish this was the case.
